Title: Picking up new bike. Fit in my SUV?
Post by: CRXDrew on April 18, 2006, 08:39:48 PM
I will be picking up a 96 Gs500 this weekend and I was wondering if anyone could get me the exact dimensions of their bike. I was going to try to remove the back seats in my parents 2005 Honda CRV in order to free up extra length required. I was planning on getting it up with a ramp/plank and possible have it sit on its side if not vertical. I just need an idea of how possible this all is.

I could also get a van/truck for the day but I just want to keep from spending the extra money for it.

I personally know a guy who picked up an 87 Interceptor with an Astro van. Those I know are larger in every dimension...

why don't you just ride it home?  or have some one ride it home for you?

Absolutely don't even try it. It wont work and you will have wasted a lot of time. May go in on its side, but transporting a bike on its side is just a terrible idea.

Get someone to ride it home for ya. Get someone here to help if you need it. People here are more than willing to help if you just ask. Where is the bike and where is it going?

bike is 2.5-3 hours away. I have very little riding experience...haven't even taken an MSF course. (but will be taking one shortly in 3ish weeks)

3 hours in possible traffic (I live in the Chicago burbs and the bike is in Kalamazoo, Michigan).... I would hate to subject someone to that.

Transporting it is a good idea because It would be a bad to try and ride it home yourself. If you can't get someone to help you, load it up on a pickup. Even the small and medium pickups will handle it fine, but you'll have to do it with the tailgate down. No problem. Just make sure it's tied down nice and tight and you should be fine.

Rent/borrow a trailer or pickup... Uhaul has a motorcycle trailer that works well for $15 I think, maybe $25.  You might be able to get the bike into a van with the mirrors removed and maybe bars turned down, but no way will it fit into a suv, especially a little CRV.

Kzoo to Chicago isn't the worst drive in the world, I'd consider doing it for you if I was in the area and if I knew the bike was in good(SAFE!) condition.

I hope something works out... Best of luck to you

a truck (flatbed) from uhaul is 20 a day and 1.19 a mile! According to google Kalamazoo is 157 miles from my home.  :icon_confused:

It will fit in the back of an Astro I can tell you that much, as long as you take off the mirrors. Your trip is like the exact oposite of what mine was. I went from Lansing, MI to Gurnee, IL for my GS. Good luck with it tho.

it appears i could rent a truck (through Enterprise) in Kalamazoo and make a one way trip with it to Broadview... or atleast drop it back off to one of the larger branches in chicago. Would cost me 60ish... looks like the best bet so far. Just need to call the office to make sure a one way and that a truck is available.

 silly me.. i could just rent the truck around my home.. and drive that to and back. Forgot that Enterprise has no mileage charge.  :thumb:

I got the same year too  :thumb:. I had to pick mine up in a truck too and it was no fun it barely fit. (it had a cab over the bed). I just bought my wife an CRV and i think it is small, but she likes it. And when i seen that you were going to try to fit a bike in it i kinda laught inside.  :thumb: :thumb:

I did the Enterprise truck thing, it worked out great.  It was about $60 for the day (took it back the next morning) plus the gas.  They gave me a pretty nice Chevy with leather, etc.; it was a very comfortable trip.

Pick up a set of 4 ratcheting straps (like $20 @ Wal-Mart) and it's rock solid.  I also got a set of soft straps at Wal-Mart ($5, in the motorcycle accessories aisle)) that fit over the handlebars so I had a solid place to hook the ratchet straps.

definitely ahead of you... my friend back home will have a few straps waiting for me when I get back.

BTW- this board has been great so far. Reminds me of an old CRX board I was on back in the day. Smaller community based with more mature members.  :thumb:

For shits...here is a pic of the bike i'm picking up

Drew. Do NOT listen to any of these people telling you to ride it back. It's a stupid idea. You have the right idea wanting to transport it. Get the truck and pick up your baby. When you get back, you'll have all of the help you'll need from us. Good luck on the transport. :thumb:

I got my 91 to fit in the back of a civic last week :o Granted I also stripped it down completely and it fit nice and fine. Even had time to stop off at the bar and say hi to some friends. :flipoff:
Pics are coming soon of this feat.
