Title: power loss
Post by: cell_491 on April 20, 2006, 05:27:54 PM
Okey dokey I just finished a bunch of stuff on my bike. Vance and Hines Full exhaust system, K&N RU-2970 (lunchbox) air filter, Dynojet stage 3 jet kit (its what dynojet reccomends with the lunchbox filter, 5 degree ignition advance, and a new set of sparkplugs for good measure. Now the sound is great and i can feel the extra power when i ease on the throttle, but if i nail the throttle (i ride really hard...i know its bad) the engine stutters and the power drops off tremendously for about 2 sec then catches back up. Im thinking it could be that the mixture screw isnt out far enough because i set it to the stock 2 turns out after i jetted the carbs. What do you guys think?

I don't understand how new members can have all these mods. Takes a while to do these things doesn't it?

I wouldnt mind a full exhaust system, where did you buy your V&H full system?  :icon_mrgreen:

I was at a dealership today getting some new jets for my bike, and the parts guy noticed that I was doing a huge increase on my jet from the stock one... so he asked about it and I told him that I was planning on putting on a K&N lunchbox. He advised against it because of lack of pressure that is produced by the air box that obviously won't be there any more... He said something about our bikes having CV type carbs and the slides don't respond as well without that back pressure

ok lets see if anyone else has this problem with the lunchbox filter if so maybe we should be somthing in the faq about staying away from it.

Well from what I've read and heard, its kind of a trade off... you either get throttle response with a drop in K&N in the Stock Airbox and a little HP increase, or you get a large HP increase and you loose throttle response.

this is severe loss of throttle response though...it literally almost throws me over the handle bars if i nail the throttle

Did you shim the needle valves?  That helped me when I had that problem on my Philonia Yellow 99.

What Jet needle/shim setup do you have? that may be your problem

Im using the stage 3 jet kit from dynojet (their website says to use the stage 3 if you use the RU-2970 air filter) other than that the carbs are stock. And about shimming the needles I used the stock shim like dynojet reccomends...im gonna try adjusting the mixture screw to 2 1/2 turns see if that helps ill let you guys know
