So I'm getting ready replace to factory bar with a set of clip-ons (to be placed under the top tree), but I haven't figured out what I am going to do/ what I could do with the factory bars mounts on the top of the tree.
Anyone got any suggestions? Probably a dumb question, but could it just be flipped over?
BTW ... Just to let those that have helped me with advice in the past few weeks ... I'm legal now!!! (no, not like that, sick-o's !!) :icon_mrgreen: , I completed my MSF on WED and also finished all my licensing/ registration paperwork this week. So, I'm out and around town like a crazy-man!!!!
I originally got the bike b/c of gas prices, but now ... who am I kidding ... I'm hooked! :thumb:
Thanks again everybody for all your help.... -Scott

You might spend less for gas if you only use your bike for what you'd use your car for. However, I don't recall ever taking my truck out for a 90 minute ride just to ride. Even then, you might spend less in gas money, but considering everything, I don't think you'll come out ahead. Bikes are a money pit. :)

Well, when it takes $50+ to fill up my Jeep (plus those Jeep mods are WAY more expensive than bike mods), I'll take the bike-money-pit over that any day. And yes, I love being able to "blow a tank of gas" on the bike and it only sets me back $10 .... Pretty cheap entertainment if you ask me! Hell, I can't even take my wife to the movies for that much ... and then she wants to talk the whole time!!!
... so back to original question ... I'm guessing no one has thoughts on my triple-tree question!?! :dunno_white:
If you want clip ons, take off the top clamp and drop the forks a half an inch or so, then clamp the clip ons onto the forks.

Well, my tank is 15.9 gallons on my Frontier, and I get about 20-23 mpg, so it's not as bad as most trucks. However, I spend very little on maintenance, and it runs like a top with 80,000 miles on it. I bought it brand new in 2000. Overall, I've done about 20 oil changes, 1 transmission and differential oil change, new belts, new idler pulleys, new horn, new clutch master cylinder, new tires, two fuel filters, two air filters, two breather filters, new headlights, and a new A/C high pressure hose, coolant flush and fill, $6000 worth of insurance, and around 4000 gallons of gas at about $1.50/gallon average. So overall I've spent around $25000 on my truck. That's about $0.31/mile.
I've lost track of how much money I've spent on my bike. It was $1300. Since then, I've bought new tires, a new tank, cleaned, rebuilt (all new seals) and rejetted the carburetor, new K&N drop-in filter, Around $300 in new parts from a minor wreck (not my wreck), new chain and sprockets, a new turn signal, new turn signal seals, several clutch levers, a brake lever, a clutch switch, valve adjustment, an oil change, miscellaneous bolts, and about 10 gallons of gas at about $2.75/gallon average.... That might be all. I have put about 350 miles on it, so I just went below $10/mile that this thing has cost me so far. So right now, it's a money pit. :)
When people ask me how much money I spent on my bike, I typically answer, "all of it..."

Let me ellaborate ... When I say Jeep, I mean a '99 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7 V8 w/ Air Raid Throttle body & Intake w/ a K&N cone filter. 31" BFG tires underneath a 3.5" lift. SkyJacker 8000 Nitro series shocks (w/ a Rancho 5000 series steering shock). Full aftermarket front and rear bumpers w/ guards. This thing will take any trail you throw at it (minus all the retarded stuff you shouldn't be driving on in the first place!) Oh, and the best part I almost forgot to mention ... it's got 115,000 miles on it and it's NEVER been in the shop. Seriously. (Thanks to scheduled main. by yours truely....)
So you find yourself asking ... well, if he's got such a great Jeep, why does he need a GS? Good question! ... b/c I get 10mpg in town and 15 on the highway, that's why....
Now that this thread has been seriously jacked.... .... Since posting this, I've devised a plan to mod the stock headlight mounting brackets to allow the clip-ons to mount btwn them the fork tube. Hence, allowing me to mount them under the top triple as I wanted in the first place. No offense to anyone who has 'em, but isn't it kind-of an oxy-moron to have clip-ons mounted on TOP of the triples? :dunno_white:
Anyway, I'll try to remember to post pics/ write-up when I'm done. :thumb:

If you have a older model GS500 before the full fairing version you might be able to do the conversion I have pictured below. This will all be dependent on how much room the clip-ons you are going to use take up on the fork tube.
I did this conversion on my RZ350 which has a NSR250MC21 fork installed and I used the headlight mounts from a SV650 and cut them down as pictured in the image below.
You might want to find some spare GS500 headlight bracket to do the conversion so that if you do not like the clip-ons you can convert back to stock with no problems.

Link to image of my RZ with SV650 headligh mounting brackets modified to allow for the clip-ons to fit under the upper triple and still allow the use of the stock headlight. The SV mounts before being cut and bolted back together would of filled from the upper to lower triple.

Here is a image of them on a CBR600F2 fork where the clip-ons could mount above the upper triple clamp and before I modified the stock SV650 brackets

Grind them off fool. Would be the easiest thing to do i suppose. jk on the fool part.
ALRIGHT! Thanks guys!!! :thumb: That's exactlly, what I was thinking of doing!!!
Thanks for posting the pics and the links ...
I'll be sure to take pics and do a write up, just in case others were wondering about this too.
Thanks again, guys!!! :thumb:
