Title: Fork oil etches paint?
Post by: solaron on April 22, 2006, 11:14:21 AM
Not sure what the issue is. I'll have to post pics when I get home tonight...

but I noticed today when I went outside that I had a streak of black liquid, just a thin line, oozing down my left fairing. I wiped at it with my finger and the black paint and all came away exposing the plastic itself. It looks kind of weird. What could cause this? This is a new 2006 gs, about a month old, and its still under warranty.

And my second question: When I ride now, I feel a rythmic vibration where my legs touch the gas tank. It's almost like I'm driving over rumble strips, ever second or so, but it comes and goes. It never did that before. Any ideas?

Thanks, sorry for the noobish questions.

Sounds like brake fluid.  Oil typically won't do something like that.  It could be leaking out of the reservoir, oozing down the handle, and dripping down onto the fairing when the bike's on the side stand.  Sounds like a classic warranty issue to me.

That's what I'd assumed at first, but since it was on my left fairing and not right I wasn't sure. I guess it could drip over somewhere since the bike leans to the left when its on the stand. I felt around and couldn't feel any leaks or anything and did feel a slight bit of oil around the forks, but I'm not sure if that's normal or not.

I feel like such a newb.

Any ideas on the weird vibration?

Where does the line of oil start from?

I didn't read the vibration part.  AFAIK, that's normal resonance.  I think it happens around 5k or so.  I have the same thing.

The line of oil starts at the very top of my fairings, just under the grips. It is only on the left side, not the right.

Hm, I'm used to the vibration, but this almost feels like my phone is going off and on in my pocket every other second for a couple of minutes, then it will stop (or else maybe I move my legs and don't feel it for a few) but then its back. It's something I've never felt before.

If it's under warranty just take it to the dealer... why should you worry about it?

The place that handles warranty work is open from 10am to 6pm. I work from 9am to 6pm, 1 hour away from it. They're closed on Mondays, the 1 day that I get off early... so I won't be able to make it there for at least a week and a half. I want to make sure that I'm not letting anything serious go that long.

Thanks for all the input.

I get that too. It's a combination of vibration from the bike and the wind going over your pants causing the fabric to rustle back and forth.

Ugh, you're right I'm sure, heh. I should've thought of that. I got new riding pants last week and have only ridden with them two or three times now. That would make sense.

Thanks.

I get phantom phone calls all the time...

Today when I was riding, I actually had 5 people call me and two txt msgs...  After I realized that, I thought every little thing was my phone ringing.  :icon_confused:
