Title: Re: I drug the bottom of my bike
Post by: samhkang on April 22, 2006, 03:53:31 PM
the exact thing happened to me last week. I was doing a sharp turn into a parking lot with my gf 2up. It was my center stand that drug. No big deal. My bike is lowered 2 inches so I kinda expected such thing. I didn't think it damaged any since I weight 120lbs and  my girl 100lbs. I am taking my center stand off soon as I remove the exhaust for wileyco can mod. But for now, I just took off the little rubber stopper that is placed between the right side of the center stand and the exhaust to get about an inch clearance. The center stand stays up about an inch that way and it helps from draging quite a bit. Have fun riding with your girl, that's so fun.  :thumb:

Holy lightweights!
I'm just 160 (and I'm considered small) and my gf is probably like 120. I've never riden 2up on my GS yet, and I'm not sure if I want to now that I've heard this.

The stock suspension is too soft for a 150 pound rider solo.  Two up, it is overwhelmed.  A front fork spring upgrade and a Katana 600 shock is the minimum for two up.  I put a Katana 600 shock on my street GS and the rear was plenty firm two up.  I weigh 160, my wife is 120. (Plus over 40 pounds of riding gear between us.)

Speaking of soft suspension, did you adjust the coil-over before riding two up?  It does help a little, and with our poopie suspensions, a little means a lot.  I have mine set to the stiffest setting all the time.  Feels better to me.

Hmm. I've ridden two up with my girlfriend before and have never experienced anything dragging. Together, my girlfriend and I weigh about 260, plus however much our gear weighs.

Did you adjust the preload accordingly? Did you adjust your tire pressure accordingly? For two up your rear shock should be at the maximum preload (#7, I keep mine on #6 all the time and don't bother to adjust it when the girl gets on). You definitely need to if you're still on the stock setting (#4). Also, your rear tire pressure should be increased to about 41psi.

Yep. Small bump in a curve 2up -> centerstand swings down -> some scraping. Harmless.

Unless the centerstand scrapes, catches, and throws you off the bike.
