Hey guys I'm about 2 1/2 weeks into my 05 gs500f. Took me 2weeks to put 600miles on it, and i picked it up today from the shop having the intitial service done. I have ordered the exhaust flange from srinath and would also like to add the 15t front sprocket, k&n box, and rejet carbs while i'm installing the exhaust. However i've heard conflicting information on when its safe to modify air, fuel, and exhaust on the bike. A harley guy that works for my families machine shop says wait until 2000miles, i have friends that say anytime is fine. What do you guys suggest? The bike is awesome. I've always wanted a motorcycle but was terrified of the huge amounts of power they produce. I really think i made a wise decision in getting a gs500. Seems to be a solid dependable bike. I'm hoping that 18-24months from now I'll feel comfortable enough to get a cbr(i've been lusting for one for many years). Anyways i guess this is sorta my introduction and hope that I can be a solid contributor to the group. I'm a pretty active member of my car group 986forum.com (porsche boxster/caymen group). As I mentioned before my family owns a machine shop we use hurco cnc milling machines. I would love to work on custom stuff for cost if you guys have the need and time to work w/ me on it

You made a very good choice :thumb: The GS is excellent, and this site is excellent too. I've got over 9,000 miles on my GS and I am not even partially bored with it. Like I said in a previous post, I love my GS more and more everyday :icon_mrgreen: It is a very easy to work on, dependable, and versatile bike.
I would say anytime after initial, proper break-in of the engine is a good time to mod. :thumb:
thanks for the quick response. i'd really like to do all the mods at once so that i will not have to keep fiddling w/ my carb settings. I guess it'll take a week or two to have all the parts come in so i can expect another 4-500miles on it by then. Seems that'll be a good time to get it started. I'll try and post pics.
I guess it depends on how uch you care about your warranty.

I hadnt considered the warranty issue. That's one of the reasons i decided on a new model v/s a used one. With the exception of cutting the muffler off to put the "slip-on" can on everything should be reversible. I guess i'll have to weigh my options for a day or two before making a decision. Has anyone had warranty issues w/ a modded exhaust?
I don't know of a specific example, but a modded exhaust could very well void your warranty. It will change the back pressure, which can cause the engine to run hotter, which they will blame for any engine problem.
An exhaust will effect your warranty as it will change your engines air to fuel ratio.
I'll likely give the mods a month or so. Besides it'll take me awhile to get all the stuff in the mail. I'm a new rider and could stand the extra time on the bike w/ stock power. Also will be waiting for the "slip flange" from srinath. Anyone heard an update on there status? From all that I have heard most warranty work is done very early in the bike's life. Not that i'm extremely knowledgeble on this but i've done a bit of research. Hopefully it wont be much of an issue. Only time will tell. Thanks for the input guys!
