Title: Misleading seat height?
Post by: Alphamazing on April 23, 2006, 11:43:45 PM
So I've got an '04 GS500, which has a published seat height of 31.1 inches. I regularly buy jeans in all brands with an inseam of 30". I can easily flat foot my bike while standing up and have plenty of clearance room between by crotchal accessories and the seat.

So which is misleading me? My pants, or the seat? Did the previous owner lower my bike? Am I totally missing something, or am I just being a retard because it's 1:45 in the morning?

it could be the result of you wearing a shoe and the bike compressing from your weight...  :dunno_white: so yea, you're being a retard.  :cookoo:

Well, like I said, I could stand up flatfooting it and still have plenty of clearance. My shoes aren't that thick, either.

When you stand up do the pants clear it as well...or just your junk?
Could be that the inseam is measured from the bottom of the crotch to the bottom of the leg.
Also, your pants might ride up a little just from that standing position (I know mine do)....

Yeah, my pants clear it as well (I'm pretty sure at least).

But still... 30 inches when I stand up should be less so when my knees are bent... Maybe I'll just go measure my inseam myself... stupid misleading pants.

I'm not so sure it's your pants.  My friend's SV is considerably higher than the GS, even though it's supposedly only .4 inches higher.

Seat hight isn't the only thing that will define if you can flatfoot a bike, though. The seat shape and width are major contributers to this.

hey the inseam of your pants matters not...when you stand straddled over the bike your legs are at an angle so even if they are 30in long your arent standing 30in high

I have the same "problem"

I think the previous owner of my '04 lowered the bike based on the fact that I don't have a center stand.

Well, if you're unsure about your inseam and quite concerned about it you could always go to a tailor and have some strange dude rub your boys with a tape measure.  Or you say "f%$k it, I'll just rub my balls myself then go sit flatfoot on my GS 'cause worrying about the relationship between my inseam and the seat height on my bike is like experiencing anxiety when trying to decide whether to wipe my ass with Kleenex or bathroom tissue."

My only concern was that the previous owner  might have possibly lowered my bike, in which case I'd go about trying to fix that.

It's a possibility, I'm 6'6" and have a 34" inseam and still have to adjust myself whenever i get on

can one lower the bike without an obvious sign such as dog bones?

Well I haven't really checked those, so it's entirely possible.

Heh, when I stand above my bike, there's a good 2 inches or so between my pants and the seat...Probably due to the 37 inch inseam lol

Well, mine wasn't lowered...  I have a 32" inseam and have more than an inch of space when I stand up.

So uh...  Do you own a tape measure?  :icon_razz:

Err...that's more of a guess really...All of the pants I've owned with a 36" inseam are a little short (except for the "low and loose, sooper baggy" ones)...So I'll just assume that it's between 36 and 38 (and yes, I know they don't make pants with odd numbered inseams lol)

no you can get odd sizes... but I rarely find anything longer then 34

wait... why are we talking about clothing sizes? i feel so... so... womanish

Couldn't this question be resolved for the price of a $3 tape measure?

just asking  :)

And it sucks. Every time I try on pants, 32 is too short and 34 is too long. So I end up with a baggy pair at 32 so they sit lower or looking like Erkel with 34's to keep them out of the snow/mud/dirt.

Hear me, clothing manufacturer people? you already make a billion sizes, add the odd ones!!!! :2guns:

I used to wear Levi's 32x33s...  I've seen 33s in other pants too.   :dunno_white:
