Title: Tank pads ... Worth-it or waste???
Post by: cyclin-scott on April 24, 2006, 09:08:56 AM
I'm curious to hear peoples' opinions on tank pads. I've thought about getting one, but was wondering the pros and cons ... if any. I'm mostly worried about dirt getting stuck underneath and possibly scrathing the paint. But, that's sounds like a problem you'd more likely have with a tank bra. I'm also a little hesitant about placing a "big sticker" on a painted surface.

All thoughts and opinions welcome.

Thanks, Scott  :thumb:

I wouldn't worry abou the paint, unless you think you might remove it. it's a sticker aint it?

the concept is to prevent scratches, but it just for looks IMO.  if you like the look then go for it. :thumb:

and post pics.

I got one that is magnetic, works pretty good.   Plus if you put in on crooked you can fix it!

BTW--  customizing a GS shouldn't mean automatic SQUID.  Dude loves his bike and is making it different.

I have rimstripes. and soon a "trick" gs streetfighter with no engine mods.  :o poser.

who gives a F**k?

I bought a tank pad and I like it. It helps give the bike a sporty look, yes, but it also helps protect it from your zippers and whatnot. Before you apply it, just make sure the tank is CLEAN. And if you ever wanna take it off, a big bottle of 'Goo Gone' is your friend  :thumb:

Or to keep your zipper from scratching your tank.

I've never had a problem with my zipper or belt buckle scratching the tank, and I straddle the thing pretty tight. they do look cool I guess; just be careful- I've heard the chrome color ones dont stick for sh*t. but you wouldnt get chrome.....would you?

Teflon Nicky covered his entire tank in chrome ones. It looks so sick!

Also, getting a clear tank pad is NOT recommended...  You'll be SOOOO sorry...

You'll be able to see the air bubbles and any dirt underneath

I think they look ok. I don't have one, but i've considered buying one.

I think tank pads look nice when the person does a nice clean, straight install and the tankpad isn't too overly flashy.

THE SECOND IT STARTS TO PEEL OFF - REMOVE IT!!!! AND REPLACE IT... They look terrible once they start to peel.

I think ... like many others here on this post ... I'm going to with a "carbon" tank pad.

I too haven't had any real problems with my zipper coming in contact with my tank 1) b/c I were uniforms all the time and they have button flies and 2) ... if you're riding around and your zipper is playing "paddy-cake" with the tank ... look out buddy cause you're about to get pulled over for indecent exposure!

Seriously though, while in uniform I do wear a HUGE rigger's belt that's got a nasty buckle on it. I'd hate to look down on day and see scratches on the tank. So, like I said, I 'm going with a tank pad for all purposes of functionality .... and I'm getting a carbon one just for the simple reason that it kicks ass!  O0

And for those of you that think a few accesories on your ride make you a poser ... your bike is still completely stock, right!?!  :bs: ... I rest my case.

Mine is pretty funny. It's made by Pro Grip and it says "RACE PASSION" on it. Yeah man, I'm clearly passionate about racing. Hence the GS between my legs.

Haha ... that's like naming your ride "Ass kicker" ... when you have a 250!

Sweet tank pad though ... :thumb:

you could try the clear tank protectors like http://www.mag-knight.com/

or like http://www.thetankslapper.com/

both leave your bike looking like it doesnt have one. the point of them is to protect the paint from scuffing, not only zippers. Ride without one long enough and you'll see the benefit clearly.

My father has the Tank Slapper on his. It's noticeably visible after time and has bubbles under it from heat expanding the material. He might need to take it off and put it back on (or get a new one), but it's not invisible for very long.

the mag one is far better. I agree, you can see the tankslapper. I have a set for my bike but I never put it on for that reason...

No color matched stuff for the GS, which means a faux carbon fiber or a cheesy black/white. Eh.
