I'm looking to start parking my GS for 8 hours/day in a parking garage. There's a metal railing I can use for a stationary type lock (don't want to use just a disc lock). I'll have to carry said device on my commute either in a small tank bag, or in a courier bag. Also don't want to pay a king's ransom for it, as I'm unemployed at the moment.
Any suggestions? What do you guys and gals use?
My '91 is not worth all that much, but it seems like people will take just about anything these days.
Can you leave your chain/cable lock attached to the railing while you're gone? You can run a chain through the frame and it seems like a pretty good deterrent.
I have an Abus chain, disc lock, and cable lock. You can get them all keyed alike. But the chain and cable lock are too heavy to take with you all the time. Kryptonite and OnGuard are well regarded as well.
Also, you might be able to stow a big U-lock under your seat. But make sure you can get it around your frame AND the rail before you go that route.
There's plenty of room underneath your set to store the chainlock. Put it through your frame and call it a day.
And, so the parking garage attendants don't cut your chain and lock that you leave there at the garage, ask them if it's okay to leave it there.
I just use a giant Master padlock on the front brake disk. And, I have a purple '94, with anti-theft scratches on the pipe.
Thanks for the input, you guys. Unfortunately, I can't leave the lock behind each day, as I have to park in a regular numbered car space, same as the cagers. Pity, too, since there's lots of space at the edges perfect for a motorcycle. Maybe I need to move to a more motorcyle-friendly city, like San Francisco, Seattle, *your city goes here*.
You're in the same area I'm in. What parking garage is giving you problems? You know of the power of B.A.R.F. (Bay Area Riders Forum)?
