Title: Engine case sealant?
Post by: dgyver on April 26, 2006, 09:58:44 AM
What sealant is required for putting the engine cases back together?
The manual only states a Suzuki sealant product. The residue that is on the cases now looks like a silicone type product. I have been planning on using a high temp silicone.

RTV works well enough on regular engines.... Go for it on the gs?

i just used the suzuki goo that you are talking about. its not really like silicon at all,
on my old 185 i just used gasket goo and that was fine

I don't know where I heard this, but I heard you're supposed to use a copper based sealant.

I could be wrong though, just throwing it out there.

I used RTV on mine and it served me well.  a thin coating should suffice.

Blue Hylomar is the stuff to use, far more reliable and effective than RTV or other silicon based products.........we swear by it at work, never ever been known to let us down.

Thanks for the suggestions. I guess a stop at the autoparts store is in order to see what is readily available.

would not recomend the RTV as it squishes out from between the cases to the INSIDE aswell and can break off getting traped in the screen, filter, gears, bearings all of which are bad.  there is the stuff called suzukibond, yamabond etc,  there is some stuff i picked up at the bike shop called 1104.  its a non cureing non hardening sealant that is designed for machined surface fitment.  alittle goes a very long way. i used it on many items includeing splitting cases on 4 engines. it works great for area's that seep around seals (not the shaft surface) including the cam half moon sections of the valve cover seal when they get alittle hard from age. best part is it cleans right up with carb cleaner and a rag. even on an engine that has been run for awhile. you have it appart now and dont want to have to figure out a bandade to stop a leak later on let alone pull it all apart again to redo it.

i think that tube cost me 12$ and it was same size as typical RTV tube and i would Gladly get it again.

hmmm...the stuff that Suzuki used on the cases resembles RTV silicone. They do warn about using excess and the same potential clogging issues though.

I forgot about the Permatex non-hardening gasket maker that I use on the valve cover gasket half-circles and did not think about using it on the cases. But since I need to get some crank bearings, I will check at the shop and see what they have to offer.

Oddly this is the first time into the cases. Interesting putting an engine back together that I did not take apart.

we always just use rtv but only the very slightest amount the case halves are a machinened surface and require very little sealant
