I posted about this a while back, but still having problems. 95 GS, when I bought it there was an extreme lean condition. Big stumble off the bottom. Went to 40 pilots, 122.5 mains, 1 shim under the needles. Still stumbled, but about 90% better. Ran much better mid to top end. But right off of idle, there is still, what feels like a lean spot. On the advise of a friend, I raised the float height so that the float when the carbs are upside down, points down, at about a 15 angle, and the corner of the float points at the edge of the gasket surface. Pretty precise and exacting set up, huh? They are as close to the same as each other as I can get. So I put it back together and it is about 95% now. It's close, but not as close as I'd like it. Still a slight stumble. And a high idle when hot. All the hoses are in good shape, I don't think there are any vacuum leaks.
One other thing. When I go for a high speed run, at least as high speed as this little bike will do, the carbs run out of gas. If I let off, they fill back up and run fine. Any opinions, or is the Pingel Harley petcock mod the only option?
Did you pull the brass covers over the mixture screws and trun those out to 3 whole turns out?

This is common, and has been addressed many times here. If you're going to do high speed runs for a prolonged period of time, simply put the petcock on PRI to avoid the fuel starvation issues.

Yes, I am actually at 3 1/2, more turns out than on any other bike I own.
