Well I found (what I think to be) a good deal on a 95 gs500...

for 800 bucks. It needs a new ignition cover on the right side, but I think its still worth 800 bucks. What do you guys think?

Wow!! Looks like a great deal from the pic!! Do you know anything about the mechanical history? Is it running?
To me it looks like it needs quite a bit of TLC to get it looking good. It went down on the left side, so a few things need replaced, not just the ignition cover. It's also spent quite a bit of time outside (rusty spots and bolts). However, if it runs at all, it's probably worth it.
If it runs, I'd say it's worth it. I'm looking for just such a bike, as I intend to take an old E and make it a streetfighter. I could see that bike with a rattlecan paintjob, some black rims, etc. Keep us updated, as it looks like it's in Atlanta (from the URL), and I may be interested, if you don't snatch it.

Hey, mine's a rat too. However, I was just warning him about what's going to go into it for non-rat status.
It sorta runs... He says the carbs need to be cleaned, but what I haven't told him is that where the ignition cover needs to be replaced (the WHOLE cover not just the small top one) two wires are cut so I think that could be part of his running problem. But it has been down, and my goal is for 300 bucks to get it running and looking good with a rattle can paint job on the wheels and the rest of the fairings. only has 10k miles...
Also the main reason I am looking at a GS is to hone my skills in the mountain. I had a 2005 R6 that got jacked so after I got the insurance money, I got a CBR 600rr.. Now I looked at insurance rates and they are insane for a 19 year old with a 600 and I can't afford full coverage. I am just looking for something that can handle well in the mountains and put me around town whenever. Hopefully I am looking in the right place. THe only thing I am scared about is that going from a 600 Supersport to a gs500 will leave me un-satisfied.
If it's been sitting, you'll need to clean the carbs. It's the nature of the beast.

She's right. If you ride the GS right it can keep up in the corners just as good as the 600s. It'll force you to be smooth on the throttle and to learn to carry your speed in turns, rather than just using the power to get you out.

well the gs is no 600rr. thats for sure. I started on a gs500 and a year and a half later moved up to the 600rr...the gs WILL teach you how to be a smooth (ie faster) rider. even now on the 600rr people constantly tell me how smooth I am on it. also, hitting up the local canyons on the gs will force you to learn to be a better rider. not that the gs is a great canyon bike-budget bikes have crappy suspension, small tires, etc...but its those very things that make you a better rider. people that start on a 600 dont learn to be a good rider in the corners because they have the horsepower to make up lost time (from slower cornering) by blasting the straights. You'll have to become better at maintaining your momentum-which means you'll learn to carry lots of corner speed. people still tell me that I also carry lots of corner speed. at the track I can keep up with the literbikes just fine too, because of corner speed-whatever little ground they make up on me at the front straight I take back a few corners in...

It's been crashed on the left side... Missing Bar-end and Mirror... Broken clutch lever, trashed tach bucket.. It might be the angle of the pic, but the peg looks bent too.... Probably has bent handle-bars if they weren't replaced after it went down. Couple dents in the tank... Few scratches... Some rust...
But... $800 is a good deal.
You can find most or all of those parts for cheap and get it running...
