Title: And on that note, I'm out.
Post by: SmartDrug on April 30, 2006, 11:36:52 PM
I've been a member here for going on 3 1/2 years, I've seen a lot of people get helped on here and a lot of stupid drama.  Even though I don't post as often as some members, I did my part to contribute as I saw fit, but I must say that I am sick of this site.  Look back at the board one year ago and this crap didn't happen, we didn't lose members, we didn't have issues because members we being rude and this site served as a good source of info for both new riders as well as experienced GSers, now it's just a mess.   A thread meant to address the issue of a recent member banning has turned into a BS chit chat thread, and by a moderator no less.  It's been a fun time with my GS and I've been helped a lot by this site and by some of its members, but you admins and moderators need to rethink your game plan.  Look at who contributes to these farcical threads, the new members who are just wasting bandwidth and frustrating people who used to contribute like GSJack or Roadstergal;  I'm sorry it's not just new members, AJGS seems to be doing a pretty good job of encouraging this trend.

I wish you all safe journeys, especially those concerning motorcycling; Ride Safe, Ride Smart and I'll see you on the other side.

AJ has been very good lately. The whole banning issue is sad, but needed. I messaged the banned individual and she really was an idiot, so are the folks that sink to that level tho. I've said it before, people just need to let things go. The demographic of the site does seem to of changed to a younger audience but maybe thats due to the new faired GS is attracting a younger crowd? I also believe the moderators have a very difficult job and preform it very well, its not a job I would want. It involves lots of reading/ reasoning/ and patience. Consitering its time consuming and nonpaying, not a bad job @ all. People will come and go, maybe their is a lil too much b.s. I dunno. The site still functions just fine  for me. G'luck w/ the future.

This is a natural thing for internet message boards. Honestly, they come and go and so do members. Consider this also, the GS is a starter bike and many "noobs" join to find info and grow out of the bike and website. Fortunately there are people who still stand by the side even though they have grown up and out of their GS's (Pablo comes to mind).

Anyway, every site that has been around for a few years has their "old" members and they pretty much always complain about the new members. Heck I've been on one of my honda message boards since early 03 and another since long before that. There are still 01's that complain about the "noob 04's"  :icon_rolleyes:.

Moving on isn't a bad thing. The community will more than likely grow with or without a particular member.

I joined the site because im interested in the GS as a step up bike for me. Some of the stuff i read on here's really useful other stuff is funny and some is plain stupid, but generally seems pretty good to me.

I definatly agree with the idea of having a non-gs thread but still about motorcycles. Then my Beginner bikes post would have a proper place to fit  :thumb:

I disagree with this, being even more of a noob than yourself. I don't think it has anything to do with thick skin, it has everything to do with being respectful and polite. I got excellent answers to the threads I posted and didn't have anyone insult me.

I dunno bout that. The noob just has to be reasonable. Coming onto a board an expecting a reply in 5 minutes is unreasonable. (Even though this board does have a lot of people who post almost instantly.) Coming onto a board and demanding things of the older members is not reasonable. Coming onto a board and not heeding the suggestions of those who have been there longer than you is not reasonable.

If a noob comes in with common sense, common decency, and common courtesy (none of which are common anymore, it seems), they will do more than ok here. A sense of humor doesn't hurt.

I hate to see so many people badmouthing the board right now. Granted, we go off topic now and then, but I won't highjack a thread until the question has already been answered (even if I have to answer it myself first), and most others follow the same guideline. Sure we have stupid posts every now and then. So what? So does every other forum I've ever been on. Sure we have our drama. But 99% of what happened recently can be attributed to TickleMeBink. She came in and ignored netiquette. No big deal ordinarily. We pointed it out to her. Instead of taking heed of our advice, she went on a rampage, attacking our board, our members, and our bike. (Well, your bike, since I don't have one yet). What did she really expect us to do? Then, to make matters worse, instead of just owning up to her mistakes, saying she's sorry, and making a fresh start, she lied to us and created 3 new usernames. If she'd apologized, I would have gladly apologized (and I believe most everyone else would have too), I'm a forgive and forget type of guy. I took offense to her thinking we were really dumb enough to not notice her 3 other usernames.

I know that that incident isn't your sole reason for leaving, simply one instance of the drama that you feel is making you leave the board. I know nothing I say will make you feel any differently. I don't even really know why I'm posting this. Or why I'm still awake.

I hope you enjoy the new bike, be safe, and enjoy the journey!  :thumb: Maybe someday we'll have a few  (it'll have to be at least one year and one month from now though, or you'll go to jail for contributing to the delinquency of a minor! )

Not acceptable.  By saying "it's natural" is to lend acceptance to this kind of behavior.

Being a moderator lately has given me headaches with some of the stuff that's been going on.  I only ask that you think before you post, if you can't, don't post; one of the reasons that alot of people don't use the search function, or can't use it efficiently, is because we have clogged up the board so much with trivial banter.

Responding to a post requires thought.  "What is the poster really trying to say, or ask?"

Don't fuel any fires, you are contributing to the problem, and thus become a part of the problem.  Be the solution, diffuse the situation.

Please try to be part of the solution.  Anybody can point out a problem, it takes a special few to point out the solution.

All depends on your outlook...

Like kids...  It's human instinct to lie, cheat, and steal...  You have to teach your kids not to do it, then you have to whoop their ass when they do it anyway.

Boards always go through this crap...  Sometimes they recover, sometimes they die...  It all depends on the people.  If everyone that's worth a shaZam! leaves, then the board becomes useless and dies.

But, if the worthwhile people stay and weather the storm, then board can recover in full and usually ends up being better.

I didn't mean its natural for people to act immature. I meant more that it is natural for people to deem it their time to move on, regardless of reason.

I think you're being a little over dramatic, SmartDrug, just to make sure you get the attention of everyone on this forum. I don't see the entire board as being purely a source of info on our beloved GS. In fact, I see it as a community first and a source second. One of the great things that makes a community just that are the different personalities that go with it. The place for these personalities to shine (or not) is in the "Odds n Ends" forum. As long as people are respectable and post in the correct topics, I don't see a problem. And I also think it's completely classless of you to start naming specific names of whom you think are troublemakers.

Indeed, it is sad to see you go.  You seemed to be a good contributing member and I enjoyed your posts.  This forum isn't quite as bad as it was back about 6-7 months ago...  Things were so OT then that I didn't bother registering.  I actually blew this site off until about Jan-Feb when things seemed to get a little better.  I will agree with the "strangers IM conversation" thing.  That has really always been the problem with this site.  Two/three people will begin a conversation about a friggin' color in a topic that originally was about rebuilding a set of carberators.  While it may be funny or something (?) to them, the rest of us are left bored/confused.

Sorry to rant.  I usually try to contribute positively to this site...but I needed to get this off my chest.

Beautifullly said, roguegeek. I couldn't agree with you more. This *is* a community, and being part of a community generally means that we share more than just one area of our lives.

I think that there has been a concerted effort by MANY here to work on the community and make it a happier, better place. The disruptions we've had lately have been more from folks who didn't feel able to join the community for one reason or another. We always can do our part by doing our very best to make newcomers feel welcome.

I agree with scratch. We've definitely had some headaches lately, and it is very helpful when everyone does their part in thinking about what they're posting and where. Not feeding the trolls is important (and probably one of the most difficult things to do!), but your efforts are appreciated. Everyone pulled together yesterday and successfully redirected the energy on the board, and for this, I'm damned proud of the GSTwin community.

Let's hope that we have many more days that are as calm as today!  :thumb:

Best wishes, SmartDrug!
