I recently changed the float heights on my carbs when I rebuilt them because they were way too high (like a couple inches above gasket level with the u-tube test).
Now the bike runs better than it ever has (after carb rebuild, air filter clean, gas tank clean, fuel hose replacement, oil change, and new plugs). However, I believe it's running lean. It only runs with the choke on. It starts right up, get's going great, but if I'm trying to idle, choke RPMs are at 4K, when I push the choke off then the bike dies on me. Also, if I push the choke off the bike wants to die on me between 0-4000 rpms.
Am I running lean now? Does this mean I set my float heights too low now? Do I need to change my air/fuel mixture screws? It's not terribly bothersome since most of my commute is highway, but when I do stop & go traffic in town, it's really annoying.
Have you tried adjusting your idle screw????

turn the choke just before the bike dies and adjust the idle until the RPMS start to go up, then pull back the choke and adjust the idle down just before the bike dies,
repeat until you no longer need the choke to keep the bike running
then adjust for aprox. 1200rpm idle.
let us know :thumb:
Thanks 3IMO for the pictures. :thumb: :thumb:
During my lunch break I rode for 20 minutes and then adjusted the idle screw . I forgot I had adjusted it all the way out when I rebuilt the carbs. :oops:
I've got it so it won't shut off now. However, the extremely poor performance from 1000-4000 RPMs continues. When I gave the throttle a fairly quick twist when making a left on a busy road, the bike just didn't want to go. It almost died. No backfires or anything though.
Above 4000 RPMs it finely starts going great. I don't know if this is relevent or not, but I can cruise at ~3200 RPMs ok, much below that though and the bike starts jerking.
You checked the float hight... but did you do this on the center stand or on the side stand??? It wont make an ENORMOUS difference but check it out
