Title: how does the gas cap vent
Post by: calispec on May 04, 2006, 08:17:52 AM
this is a follow up to my other tread about needing a new gas cap:

http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=26203.0

So i pulled off the gas cap i have and went searching for a vent that may or may not exist and may or may not be plugged. I found one little hole in the bottom of the cap that i thought might be a vent. The hole is located on the very bottom of the cap on the latching mechinism itself (i will post pictures when i get home). I could blow and suck air through the hole. I'm wondering if this is in fact the vent though as i see no where on the top of the cap that this hole might lead and since i can suck air through it I shouldn't have a vacum forming in the tank (which is happening)

What i'm thinking is that maybe this hole is not the vent and that the reson i can suck air through it is because i'm just sucking air through the hole from underneith the cap seal not from an outside inlet.

What i need to know is where on the underside of the cap is the vent into the tank and where on the cap is the inlet for the vent?

Haha...it's funny picturing someone sucking on their gas cap.

It's not technically on the cap. It's on the little filler neck thingy. The cap covers it when it closes, but its outside the area that the cap actually seals (just the mouth of the hole). That way it has decent coverage from water without being completely sealed. i'm pretty sure its on the left side. Of course, i could be wrong about all of this...but my memory doesn't seem to think so...

Quit playing kissy-face with your gas cap!

Isn't there a vent hose on the bottom of the tank as well? Been a while since I mucked around under there, but I think there is a vent hose that comes out the middle of the bottom of the tank. Take a peek, and if you see said hose, make sure it's not crimped or pinched.

Far as I know that hose is just to drain fuel spills while filling her up. It ends in a hole next to the filler cap. It also drains rainwater that collects there.

Actually, it can't be seen, it's blocked by the filler cap ring in this picture, it's in the area to the lower right of the indicated area.
