1-N-2-3-4-5-6

1 is all the way down, 6 is all the way up, that's pretty much the standard shift pattern

If you are not familiar with bikes: that's not the same as in a car. You cannot reach every gear directly.

Meaning, starting in neutral:

Kick down: 1st
Pull fully up: 2nd (you skip over neutral, which is reached by pulling only halfway up.)
Pull up: 3rd
...
Pull up: 6th.

Kick down: 5th
kick down: 4th
...
kick down: 2nd
kick fully down: 1st (again skipping over N)

Much easier than a car gearbox, actually, but easy to lose track which gear you are in.

I suggest that you do not worry about the shift pattern.  Just sit on your bike and make "vroom vroom!" noises until you take the MSF course (http://www.msf-usa.org/"). ;)

I know it's hard, but I also know that it's been done before.  Don't risk your bike and your life because of impatience.  It's a much better idea to spend a few weeks (or months) waiting to get into the course than to spend a lifetime in a wheelchair unable to ride because you didn't know how to take a turn.

Be safe, and enjoy!

Have to agree with this. Get some lessons.

~ running to catch up to the bandwagon~  take the MSF  :thumb:

BTW - the shift pattern should be stamped on the engine around the shifter.  take a look.

if the shift pattern is a bit foreign, i'd imagine that clutch work & throttle control are also a bit foreign.

I'm going to have to go with the majority here, take the course.

If you must toy around with the GS find a friend who knows how to ride and have them teach you the basics. Without the absolute basics like shifting, you're in for some nasty suprises, even if you're in a parking lot.
