I have a gas tank that i stripped all the paint so i can see all the rusted holes now will por 15 work on this
Here is my plan of attack
1. Pour in Marine Clean
2. Then Use the Metal Ready
3. Use JB Weld to patch up any holes
4. Then Use the Sealer
Here are pics of my tank

I just noticed the last pic with the huge hole in it.
The POR-15 kit has a bit of woven paper towel looking stuff in it. That is to be used for patching that type of hole. The instructions discuss this.
READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!
After the patch has set and is sealed, you then introduce the sealant into the tank.
JB weld will be fine for the tiny holes, but as I mentioned in my email to you, apply it and wait until it cures. Then sand it down and apply it again.
You will want to do the JB repairs first and then do the patch of POR-15.
i think your screwed, i had a whole lot smaller holes than that, i jb'd an por 15'd an it still leakes. id save to 40 bucks for the kit an start looking for a new tank, unless you jus got 40 to waste. but thats my opinion, you really need to talk to sirinth

Well por 15 garuntees that it will or your money back so im really in a win win situation here
In my opinion that tank is probably scrap. With the widespread corrosion and the size of that one hole I doubt that anything could seal it up permanently. Give it a shot though, especially if they'll give your money back if it doesn't work, you never know...

You might as well Toss it.thats like trying to Plug a 1/2" Hole in a Tire with Fix A Flat.It may be Gauranteed but the Guy behind the Counter is going to Laugh when you tell him the First Can didn't work and You want a Second one to cover the warranty.(That Actually has Happened to a Friend who owns the Local Auto parts. )
What ever you do JB weld will not hold for long.IF the Holes are Small enough they can be Brazed if you can find a welder willing to do a tank. Those Bigger Holes.Well? if they try to weld them closed they are just going to get bigger.
I woould say toss it.Your Safety just isn't worth the risk.
I like your use of the shift key jughead. Its definitely original, and its funny. :)
well good luck with it then, but if i were you id be cruisin ebay lookin for a tank. an as far as a warranty goes, im sure there gonna ask questions, not just give you your money back, an if they see the tank, then you can definetly kiss the warranty goodbye. an speaking from experience using the stuff, it sucks, takes several days of your time, imo a waste of time an money on that tank
He's bidding on a tank on ebay now so everybody BACKOFF and let him win it.
That tank is really in bad shape and he's better off replacing it and messing with this one at his leisure.
I think the POR job could work, he just needs to get the bike up and running. If not he'll be like me and be tinkering with it for a long time and not riding it.
I wish there was an emoticon to show my face when I saw these pics. :o <-- just don't cut it.
good luck on the ebay bidding. :thumb:
If it doesn't work out. I have a tank I'm gonna use on my streetfighter project. You send my your rust bucket and I give you mine, we can work out a deal or somethin.
I can practice welding on yours. we'll probably spend more on shipping, than you would on ebay, so definitely try that route first.
If not I'll try to help you out.
Done ... toss it. Its not weldable and definetly not POR able.
Cool.
Srinath.
yeah i would start looking for a tank that isnt f'ed. Look on ebay and in some scrap yards, if your lucky then you will find a decent that that may or may not have a little damage. Fixing dents is easier then fixing giant holes.
Srinath - I think the tank is shot also, but it will do for welding practice.
I figure the tank walls are rusted thin and I will have to cut out large sections and reweld them in. even attempting to shape and weld new sections in will teach me somethin.
don't think I expect to make this tank useable again. I am just trying to help out a fellow GStwiner and maybe teach myself a think or two about welding.
I am aiming for a 01'+ tank for my streetfighter project anyway.
OH yea 3imo ... knock yourself out ... its your welding equipment ... Didn't mean to discourage you ... wasn't even reading posts ... I post ... then read ... yea ...
Cool.
Srinath.
the more i look at the pics the more discouraged I get.....the more discouraged I get the more I wanna do it.
somehow that seems to piss off my wife....
Yea you guys are probably right i have been looking for a motorcycle salvage yard in ft worth but there are not very many i did find a use tank but they wanted 250 bucks for it
If you guys have any ideas on other options for a tank then let me know

Willy......I see your bidding on this. I just wanted to post it here so everyone knows you got dibs on it.
btw- you should wait until the last hour or later to bid. If not you will be raising the selling price and then the next guy and then you and then the next guy, its a vicious cycle. By staying out of the bidding process until late in the game you won't be adding to the price.
Just a suggestion, I'm not trying to get inyour business.
good luck on the bidding. :thumb:
good luck gettin that tank, if that don't work out, there is a guy selling his gs on here an it has an extra tank, if his don't sell then he might wanna get rid of his extra
thanks guys you all have been awesome
