Title: Motormaster H4 bulb - no wattage on package?
Post by: gsforme on May 06, 2006, 04:16:32 PM
Hi,

I dropped by Canadian Tire for a new headlight bulb... they didn't have any Sylvania H4's left.

The only H4 they had was Motomaster. On the package there was no wattage listed, but I got the thing anyways ($9 bucks).

Is H4 wattage pretty standard, and it should be alright on my GS500 ?

Yes. H4 should be fine, unless it doesn't fit the socket. Should be fine though.

they usually stock lots of the silverstar bulbs @ walmart.

I did probably 50km tonight in the dark, and this thing is so nice. The headlight on my GS lets me see better than the headlight in my car now .. and the high beams..  :o :o

They have the H4 or equilivent silverstar bulb @ walmart if you go look.

H4 ST

9003 ST

the 9003 ST is EXACTLY the same bulb as the H4 ST which is meant for motorcycles as far as the specs online show.

If you cannot find the H4 silverstar (ST) then look for the 903 silverstar (ST)

They're marketed over here as Sylvania Silverstar bulbs. They produce noticably more light at the STOCK wattage, so no concerns about overpowering the generator and draining the battery, or overheating the wires. Lots and lots of other brands have claimed to do this (a couple of which I tried after hitting a deer on a country road at night in 2000, one set was notably dimmer than stock, though blue, and another eventually blew two fuses and caused problems with a $300 switch in my 4Runner), but the SilverStars seem to work.

Full retail seems to be about $20 here. They go in just like the stock bulb. I suppose they might be marketed under another name on that side of the pond (sometimes corporations do that), but it seems unlikely. If you google "silverstar" (or search this forum) you'll get a lot of hits.

The one thing you'll notice most about the silverstars, is how much whiter your headlight is at night.

Thankyou! Certinally will prolly need a new bulb, with my bike at the moment it has such little power the lights go dim when you stop and the engine goes to idle. Its rediculous and when your on the road theyre not much brighter than your average torch - or more spread! With so many deer and rabbits and foxes and badgers over here ive swerved so much to avoid injury to them or me.

If you encounter deer on the road on a daily basis so much that you're 'avoiding' them... i would hang up your helmet and stop riding!  :o

I installed that bulb (surprisingly easy getting at it behind the fairing add-on) and it works fine.

Just looking at the light plainly (in daylight) looks like it's dimmer than what was on before. In downtown Toronto there isn't much need for a super-bright headlight.

I will definately look around more for the Sylvania H4.
