Title: Why do cops
Post by: PatrickInNC on May 06, 2006, 06:23:10 PM
always ride by side? Does anyone know? There  are lots of theories, but why would they teach them this. Sometimes the stuff they teach the cops is backwards from what is smart.

Like why do cops not have full face helmets or anthing to protect them if they go down? I've heard the full face helmet thing is so that they can talk with their helmets on and their vision would not be obstructed when removing the helmet.

I don't know how they ride, but TPD has modular helmets and they ride BMWs instead of Harleys.

I've seen cops wearing modular (flip-up) helmets, armored jackets with their officer detail on them, full leather gloves, pants, and boots before.

Good,

From what I have seen in Cali and here in Vegas, they do not have these types of things. The north vegas and some of the troopers have BMW's, the rest have Harleys, but that really doesn't matter when it comes to crashing. The vegas cops do have gloves and calve high boots, and also have heavy stuff to wear when it gets cold.

I am glad other departments have invested in this type gear.

I just think riding side by side instead of staggered like the rest of us and the way we are taught, is not a smart idea, what happens when you need to swerve?

Maybe this is the only way they were taught to ride when riding together, like a formation, and do so when providing escorts or riding through parades and is more effective for these types of things. thing is it doesn't seem smart for the street.

Philly mounted ride with open helmets, blend CHIP pants and the same patent boots that you see on TV. They are totally hardcore here. The cruiser cops describe them as being a-holes. I've known just one personally and he was a pretty good dude (maybe a bit macho) but who isn't. I think that the gear sets the tone for the crew. Denim with colors or CHIP outfits.

Never asked him why they ride side by side because they are always loners here except for parades and funerals.

They are also trained to ride side by side and have trained so much to know each other's reactions.  I've seen 'em ride Harley XR1000's, big twins, Kawi 1000's, KLR650's, KLR250's, and the BMW's.

Also, the open helmets is for better public relations, and clearer communication with offenders at traffic stops.

I've always wondered why they don't have a few specially-trained cops on superbikes. You know how they have the Pontiac Firebird Police Interceptor models (going off memory...I think that's what they call them) ? Why no cops on R1's?

Why settle for an R1?

Try to get away from that, especially if they have a well-seasoned rider in the saddle.   :nono:   :o   ;)

That's true. Helicopters do win that battle. But...shaZam!, I have nothing.

Our cops use Honda ST1300s, full kit in yellow Hi-Viz and flip-up helmets. The bikes are also Hi-Viz. Just over the water the French cops are about as low-Viz as it gets, Black beemers, black leathers and dark blue helmets.

Here in Oregon (when it's not raining) I see the cops on motorcycle wearing a sleevless shirt, not sure what kind of pants, and flip up helmets. I can't believe they wear sleevless shirts, somebody I know got pulled over for something and got chewed out for not wearing proper gear, yet the cops don't even.....

I have seen some police superbikes here in England also. In the midlands the other day i was overtaken by 2 pans in hi viz etc but then some yamaha (i think it was a yam) was following, had flashing headlights but looked stock, the rider had a high vis jacket on but the bike wasnt. Perhaps some sort of new scheme - like undercover police cars they've got.

I got to reply.

My father was a motorscout before a drunk ran a red light, and ended his career. With it a chance at a normal life.

First he alsways rode alone unless it was a funeral or parade. Then they rode side by side for show.

He had a kawi 1000.

About the full face helmet thing. The short answer is he didn't f'ing want to. I do not think it would have helped his crash anyway.

Here in NSW Australia, I'm sure they ride BMW's.

They also wear full faced helmets, and full leathers (black). MOre and more they are wearing high vis vests.

The side by side thing is almost assuredly for "presence".

What scares you more when youre speeding, seeing one cop, two cops one after the other, or two at the same time?  :icon_mrgreen:

Is presence worth the risk though?  I have alot of repsect for moto cops here in vegas, it scares the crap out of me to ride here, and be on the street. You subject yourself to so many accident scenario's riding here as opposed to driving.

I guess the thread is alot about are the moto officers properly equipped for when they go down. Sure they are great riders, just as the cruisers have great drivers, but you are no longer riding or controlling anything when sliding off the bike. I think for as much risk there is in being a moto cop, even more of just a regular officer, they should provide them with what works the best in a crash, and what works the best as being a officer

Busa 165hp, 475lbs...vs...GSXR 1K 165hp, 365lbs....  Umm may not have the torque but I think it's a little faster.....

Top speed is unaffected by weight. It's about power and aerodynamics. I think the 'Busa has been designed as one of the most, if not THE most aerodynamic motorcycle. The 'Busa's torque makes for faster acceleration, too.

True, but the 100lbs less makes for a quicker jump. IMO the differnce in torque doesn't make up for the weight difference and the 1k is more easily tossed around.

In addition to my earlier post saying about ST1300s some of the "Area beat" cops and neighborhood wardens use 125 scooters with open face helmets. I think the open face thing is to, literally, give them a human face rather than have them look intimidating.

When our regular m/c cops ride in groups they ride in pairs, yesterday a group of three Police-Dog handler vehicles passed my house with two m/c cops ahead and four behind "outrider" style. i think they were getting into position for a possible demonstration (live animal exports) later that day.

We also have Suzuki drz400's here which they use off-road to chase offenders who ride scooters in parks or down foot paths and stuff.

I would MUCH rather be on a busa then a GSXR patroling any day. Remember sport bikes are no where near as comfy as the GS.

Plus the busa is heavier and therefore much more plush. I doubt the cops care which has more hp, or hp/weight. Any 75+hp bike is more than enough to keep up with whatever.

I want the LED's cops have as flashers. They are so bright. Now that would definetely give me peace of mind at a stop light.

Oh dear god, that's too funny. I don't know if it's just me, but the chase I'm imagining between the scooter and DRZ is hi-larious.

And as for the dirtbike cops, could it possibly get any better? That job sounds awesome!

I wouldn't stop for a cop on that busa. tellthe judge I thought it was a highway bandit posing as a cop.

at the very least I'd wait until I saw a well lit gas station.

at least on the harley's / beemers they look like cops.  I bet that has somethin to do with it.

see what you can do with these two pennies.

Over this side of the pond there is a law i found out about just the other day which protects people against this. If an unmarked police car tries to stop you using its flashing lights etc... and the blues and twos behind the radiator grill (such as the beemers they use here) you don't actually have to pull over until you are in a well lit area with plenty of people around. This is purely because there have been cases where cars have been made to look like unmarked police so much so they have lights etc... but they have pulled over vehicles with women in and raped them. Also there has been story of a woman who was been flashed by one she called up the police they said there was no unmarked police vehicle in the area and that that police vehicle wasnt part of their fleet. So anyone in England, now you know you don't have to stop for an unmarked unless your in a safe place.

cops are just plain assholes (just around the rich area of miami, and no owner of a gs500), they tried to intimiadete my dad the other day on his bike by threaten him with a ticket for not fully stoping at a yield sign. i mean it was a yield sign not a stop sign. id think this guy would have some brains
