Title: Straight trade
Post by: budget speed demon on May 09, 2006, 11:04:25 AM
Well ever since the insurance companies decided to black list the GS, I've been thinking about selling my bike and buying a new one. I really waned an older GSXR 750 (late 80's or early 90's), but I wasn't seriously looking when this bike came up for sale; its an 1992 GSXR 750 with 25000km, custom paint, and exhaust. Last night I was at a local bike meet and mentioned that I was thinking about selling my GS and buying a new bike. I was instantly asked how much I wanted for the bike. The guy selling the Gixxer wants $3500 for it, but I think I can talk him down to $3000, so that's how much I said I wanted for the GS. They seemed very interested. Then I called the insurance company and insurance ends up being about the same from my GS to the Gixxer  :dunno_white:. So all in all it ends up being basically a straight trade. My GS is a 1993 with 20000km, but cosmetically its not as nice as the Gixxer. I'm not entirely sure I want to go thru with this yet though. For some reason the GS has a hold on me. I love the stupid little thing. I had all kinds of mods planed for it that I'll never get to do if I sell it. That's the main thing that I don't like about the GSXR; there's not a lot of mods left to do to it. See for yourself:

Apparently the black has a really fine silver flake in it too. I'm planning on going to see the bike tomorrow night.

So what do you guys think? Should I go for it? Are there any known problems with the 1992 GSXR 750? Anything I should know or look for when I go see it tomorrow? I would appreciate any input. Thanks a lot guys!

other than being wary of mechanical issues I'd go for it.
but then again I have two other GS's so there wouldn't be much tugin on the heart strings for me.

Youv'e been ridin long enough, you know you want a stronger bike. Go for it.  we still love ya.  :kiss3:

While the Gixxer is nice and very well done, I would stay with the GS for maintenance reasons, call me practical, but tires for the Gixxer are going to cost more and need replacing more often.  Chain and sprockets will be more expensive.  And, gas consumption will be more.  If insurance is the same, it's a wash, it makes insurance a non-issue; what I mean is if you already had the Gixxer, and insurance is the same between the two, other issues are what then matter.  How much more oil does the Gixxer use between oil changes?  Carb synching would be a 3!@+#.  Brake pads would cost more (three pairs instead of two).

As far as mods go, you will get to set-up the suspension for your weight.

Nice bike in that dark color. It would look slick if you removed that lettering.. really good actually if it was all black. Work your rim painting magic and that will be an awesome looking bike.

My GS is on the chopping block too, ever since they blacklisted it. I'm itching to trade it for a better bike if i'm paying out the ass anyways for it.. may as well pay a few extra pennies and get a better bike.

I love the old GSX-R 750's, and that one looks cool. But scratch made a great point. If the insurance on the GS is hurting you, the maintenance on the GSX-R may bury you.

All depends on what you want.  I just upgraded to a bike with a better suspension, more power, okay, more of everything and I don't regret the loss in gas mileage or increase in insurance I went through.  You just have to make sure you want the new bike.  It will serve you well and you will love it, most likely.  As far as safety goes, be smart.  You have experience on the GS so I can't think of a reason why you wouldn't be fine on the GSX-R as long as you are smart and respect what it can do.  Have a mechanic look at the GSX-R.  Most will do that for free or pretty inexpensively.

bike looks good but could hide more serious work.
first, check out http://oldskoolsuzuki.info/ then http://www.maximum-suzuki.com/ibf/index.php?s=e8ce857942c402a06586d687dd8d20aa&showforum=26 (maximum-suzuki is a bandit/katana/old school gsxr forum) and then gixxer.com of course.

I don't know much about GSX-R's. Okay, I know nothing about them. Come to think of it, I don't know much about anything else, either.  :icon_razz:

Carry on.

Haha. Anyways, I think it is a nice looking bike but I wouldn't trade my GS for it, personally. But thats how I feel about my GS, you have to decide how you feel. I agree with Scratch 100%. Maintenance will be costlier and not as fun to work on.  One of the great things about the GS is that you can pretty much do anything yourself if you want to put the time into it. And it is economical and still fun. Sure the Gixxer has more power and a lil more wow factor, but how often do you go over 100mph? Enough to warrant the power?

I am very biased; I think the GS is fantastical and suiots me perfectly. If it does NOT suit you, though, get the Gixxer or whatever makes YOU happy.  :thumb:

I always liked the older gixxers.  My favorite model aesthetically are the aircooled 1990 and 1991 models but the later models are also cool-looking bikes.  I believe that 1992 was the first year for the water-cooled model in North America.  The only GSXR 750 I've ridden was a 2001, and I can't imagine that that compares to what you're looking at.  But my vote is to go for it.

However with any bike, especially a 14 year old bike, if you don't feel qualified to thoroughly inspect the bike beforehand, try to a find a mechanic that will and make the sale contingent on your mechanic's approval.  It's worth $100 or so to make sure.
