Title: Problems downshifting while moving
Post by: Egaeus on May 14, 2006, 06:36:11 AM
I occasionally have a problem downshifting.  As I'm slowing down, I disengage the clutch and step on the gearshift a few times.  I blip the throttle, engage the clutch, and the bike lugs because it didn't change gears.  I end up having to stomp the hell out of the gearshift lever to get it to downshift.  Any ideas as to what causes this or if it's a normal quirk?  Thanks.

:dunno_white: I don't normally straight shift down through multiple gears. Just a habit from my honda 90 with a rotational shift pattern (N-down 1-2-3-4 up N-up). It keeps things aligned better. It's also harder to rev match when you jump gears. Try disengaging/engaging between each gear and see if it helps any, if not, then check for a mechanical issue.

The problem might be that after you make your first downshift you are not letting the shift
lever bounce back up.  Make an effort to make sure that you lift your boot up enough to totaly let off
the pressure off the shift lever for at least a split second.
I had the same problem going in the opposite direction on my DL650.  I had problems going from secon into third
I was not letting off the pressure with my boot and was not able to shift into third on the first try.

Thinking about it, that could very well be it.  It's when I am stopping at a light, so I'll downshift several gears quickly.  I'm probably not taking my foot off of the shift lever.

Are you letting the clutch out between gears? I find this is the best way to it. Also if you are skipping gears you may end up locking the back wheel.
