Hi guys,
my mate works for Unifilter here in Oz and i was looking to get an aftermarket filter for the GS.. I ended up finding out from the K&N lunchbox that the ID of the rubbers was 60mm... (2.375IN?)
So i got a couple of pods of my mate with ID 60mm.. but they don't fit over the carbs - about 5mill too big i reckon... :dunno_white:
then i noticed the connections on the old air box... am i supposed to be using these to attache the pods to the carbs?? if you have any pics of what the set-up should look like would be greatly appreciated..
No, the pod filters attach directly to the carb bodies. The stock airbox is removed completely. I don't have a set of carbs handy or I would measure the intake ports for you.

the only thing I can figure is this:
did you remove your carbs from the bike to fit the air filter?
because the mouth of the carb that leads into the engine is smaller than the end that connects to the air box. You may be trying to attach it to the wrong end. I just measured my lunchbox (I just happened to have it sitting here) and its a perfect 60mm.

yeah i should have taken a pic of it when i had it apart last night....
when i took out the old air box, there was a rubber grommet which is kinda shaped like the bell end of a horn which seals the airbox to the carb.. i left this attached to the bax and tried to fit the filters directly to the carb...
Just thinking if i should have connected the filter to this grommet thing then fit the grommet thing to the carb as it's the right size to fit the carb's intake...
i got NFI.... :dunno_white: :dunno_white: :dunno_white:
Nope, directly to the carbs. The only grommet or rubber should already be attached to the filter. O0
I don't know about any removable grommet on the airbox... Mine is a one-peice airbox from the air filter opening to the carb openings... the airbox goes directly onto the carbs, as do the air filter
has your bike been modified before you got it?

nope i bought my bike back in March this year when i traded in my old dirt bike... on mine it had the round clips that you undo with the screwdriver to pull the box off the carbs.. those to roundclips sit around these rubber grommets which sit in the holes in the box...
I'll see if i can get a pic of one of the grommets tonight so you guys can see it...
Ok well... it really comes down to the last count...
Measure the inside of the air filter opening... you mentionned before it was 60mm
Measure the outside of the opening on the carb... if it's less than 60mm then get a different filter! :thumb:
5mm all around is a BIG difference! That's 10mm of overall diameter!
In my case, the lunchbox is a little tight, and has to be persuaded to go on the carbs... the carb opening also isn't perfectly round, so that doesn't help when the filter opening is a perfect round!
yeah was thinking that....
ok - did some harder thinking - which really hurt :cookoo: - and was wondering what type of carbs are on your bikes?? thought that since i'm in Oz, they might put a different type on the US / EU bikes....
Will have to check what mine are...
ok guys - following on from this - managed to get the filters to fit...
next question is - what do you guys do with the other breather hoses that used to be connected to the airbox?? :dunno_white:
I'm assuming you're talking about the hose that is on the bottom left of the box...that is just a drain hose and is left open so route it somewhere that if gas or whatever drips out of the box its not gonna land on anything important.
http://www.gstwin.com/images/how_to/fuel%20hose/www_gs500_de_HoseRouting.jpg
it's weird because i thought that that drain hose goes into the gearboxas a breather..
and the upper breather seems to go into the top of the carbs or something...
Sounds like you have the upper hose right (I mean its pretty hard to screw that one up) but I'm 99% sure about the drain hose. Anyone else?
Here's what you want to do... I found this pic on another Thread on this site (posted by Dom - Thanks). That hose is the Crankcase breather hose... and you DEFINETLY want it filtered... you don't want any junk being sucked into your engine's crankcase!

It's the same setup that I have on my bike... I'm not sure which K&N part number to use for the crank case breather filter... but I'm sure someone on here can tell you...

thatnks for the info guys....
will check it out again during the week and see if i can get one of those small filers.. have to say the unifilters make a dramatic difference to the sound of the bike - starting to sound more like a 500 rather than a 110 postie bike... :icon_lol: :icon_lol:
Only thing is it's now got a really noticible lack of power once you get close to 8 thou revs... so guess in desperate need of a re-jet..
Guess i'm gonna have to add that to the shopping list of bits.. :icon_mrgreen: :icon_mrgreen:

oh shaZam!..... :o :o :o
guess i better order that jet kit tomorrow then....
thanks for the heads up... :thumb:
heres a pic of mine with the left on and the right one sitting off, they were 60mm and were a snug fit. all i can say is tighten up the clamp screw and hope its enough to do the job.
i had to rejet as well.
but still have to do some fine tuning on the low revs

yeah i found the right side one a real pain to fit... dunno why - kept comming off...
what's a jet kit worth these days for these bikes??

I'm finally getting my jets in the mail tomorrow! (http://www.alexanderpringwilson.org/images/emoticons/jumphappy.gif) Got my lunchbox on and I'll be ready to go!! All I need now is my S Flange...

urh.... S flange?? what's that?? :dunno_white:
Srinath... he's making up some Exhaust flanges for a few guys on this forum
another stupid q'n... what's the exhaust flange for??
The flange allows you to fit a slip on from another bike to our gs.

i paid £4 per jet. i went to 127.5 from 125and 122.5 dont ask me why suzuki decided to put in 2 different jet sizes on the 94-95 bikes
in also had to move the c clip down 2 notches (you guys put washers on i guess you don't have the grooves already cut in the needle)
3 turns out on the mixture screw. my only issue is between 2k-3.5k from from there it pulls hard,
have fun rejetting its really quite easy

I'm hoping that I won't have to rejet again once I get my exhaust fitted... Going by the Rejet Matrix... the jets that I will get tomorrow (I forgot that today was a holiday... so no mail today  ) which are 147.5's should make my bike run pretty well with the lunchbox and a stock exhaust... and with a slip on... the matrix says 140-150... and 147.5 is at the top end of that range... I suppose I may go to 150 if it doesn't run well... but whatever, I just want to ride for now! I'll deal with it when it comes :thumb:

Very true... and since I have access to some washers about 1/2 the thickness of the #4's that are placed in the carbs... I can really fine tune the shim thickness....
