I searched, and I cannot find any pictures of SM1 bars on a GS500 or GS500F. Anybody have any? Well do ya?! PUNK!

Those bars look absolutely awesome!! Anyone know if the current type 1 bar Suburban Machinery is selling will fit on an 01 GS500E without any clearance problems with the brake master cylinder??
Anyone selling a pair of Type 1 bars for less than $170 ??
Thanks,

i have a set thats bent. I was gonna try and straighten them .
they are yours for $20 or trade straight up for your stockers. if you wanna try and straighten them.
if not I'll just go back to my little corner and cry.
No thanks -- I'd prefer a set that's straight and ready to bolt on and go... but man, $170 is a lot of dough!!

I read that with the SM bars, the brake cylinder MAY hit the tachometer when the bar is turned all the way to the left. Someone had suggested repacing the cylinder with one from an older Katana. I was just curious if anyone had mounted the bars on the '01 without problems. If I'm gonna drop $170 on a set of handlebars, I want to make sure they fit properly.

  Sheesh!
I know that... And you know that... But, no one really cares.

Yeah, those are with the SM2s. You do have to rotate the master cylinder down so that the bolt clears the tach housing. Look on Pablo's page. He did SM2s on an '01, and I've got them on my naked '04 (same body style). Only kvgs has the Type 1s, that I know of.

Brake cylinder moves with the bars. Tach moves with the bars. I guess a set of bars could make it awkward to install, but it's either going to clear or not, won't matter if the bars are turned, unless I'm still missing something...

The master cylinder must be rotated down in order to clear the tach housing.

So, that rotates the brake lever down too? I think I would find that- irritating.
It's actually pretty comfortable with the angle of the bars
for me. The way my hands are angled when I'm on the bike, the rotation downwards puts it in the right plane for me to reach out straight and pull the brake lever in.
UUUUUUUHHHHHHHHHHH OOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHH......I was just sitting here at work...and look what came in. Too bad I'm out of town this weekend! But at least I've got something to look forward to doing when i get back.

Damn right they are pretty, they cost me just under 200 with shipping!
I'll let you know if I like them or not after I get them on. I guess they are supposed to get you down kinda like the SVS's, which I like.
I got a set of 2's through Brewer for dirt cheap. Im having the issue with the MC. Never thought about angling them down. Im going outsice.....
Okay, so I'm trying to install these bars, and the master cylinder seems like it won't go over far enough. and yes, I have turned it down so it would go slightly under the gauge. Could somebody that has installed sm1 bars help me out? I just can't get it quite over far enough, I need it to go a little bit so I can get the brake lever to meet up with that hole.
What hole, man? Just position the lever were you want it and tighten it. I have the sm2's. What i did was position the banjo bolt pretty much touching/behind the tac. That's pretty much all that you can do for these bars. Again, I have the 2's. there might be slight advantage/disadvantage between the 2 8)
Okay, I got it on, but now it looks like the clutch lever is going to be too far to the end of the bar, like the grip will not fully go on. And, on the brake side, when I turn it the lines and cables hit against the fairing.
The way I did. I put everything on both sides(easiest way to do it) bolted the bars down and positioned everything the best way i could. As for the grip, hit with some WD and slid it on. You shouldnt have any other obstacles on the clutch side of the bar. O0
Yeah, haha, now I realized I'm an idiot! I just had the clutch lever on the wrong wide of the turn signal cluster thing. doh! I just got back home a few hours ago, so please don't hit me too hard. But I'm still concerned about the wires and brake line on the right side. They really hit the fairing pretty good.
You may want to untangle the wires on the right? Not sure how you have them. As far as the brakeline, I dont have an F(yet :icon_mrgreen:) Not quite familiar with your issue, I have noticed that the brake line is pretty tight. Maybe you might want to try and reposition it some. Loosen the banjo line and manuever it around some to try and gain more slack. O0
The clutch lever hits on the little cluster thing with the turn signals, choke.... when pulled in, is that normal?
P....your clutch lever bracket(what attaches to the bar) should touch the signal box. The arc or bend in the clutch lever should touch the grip when fully compressed O0
Well :icon_confused: .... tell me what you think.

Yeah, that's right,P. It didnt do that before? Maybe you should just leave it pointed down like in the first pic?
That is down, I turned the camera to get a good shot of the lever, it is the same in both pics.
also, i tried to loosen the brake line thing to rotate the line up a tad more, and that nut is sooo f#$@%!* tight! I don't see how they got it on there without braking the damn thing.
IDK,P. I have a 90 so my controls are slightly different than yours. Twist the signal box down or up and maybe it will clear. From the pic, it looks like the clutch is fully engaged so I wouldnt worry about it.
I always say, I'll never do another mod to my car/motorcycle, everytime i get done with one, but then in a month I'm ready to change something else. I don't think I've ever had 1 bolt on for my car/motorcycle that was as easy as they say. Except for the progressive springs install, that was truly easy.
Here's some pics of the cables and stuff turning the bars to the left at full lock. Not sure if it's a big deal or not....

Looks like the zipties might be your problems.
I took it for a ride and it feels great. I guess the only thing I'm worried about is the brake line, how it is curved around.

Take a look at my brake line:

Aftermarket SS meant for my bike (89-01) right?

Russel SS line from MAW meant for the GS. It'll fit better without lower bars.

are your bars turn upward alittle? it doesn't seem to be as close to the tach bezel...

you should be alright with the brake like as it is all curled up. same as mine was. so long as its positioned so it wont ever gat caught between the triples and the frame stop you're fine. thats all I ever worried about with mine. brakes worked fine. also, I didnt have any issues with the clutch as you think you do. my 01 has the same switchgear clusters as you do as well.
you'll love those bars!
