Title: I got my insurance bill today...
Post by: Chris_B on May 22, 2006, 02:10:23 PM
Well it came today. I'm a 17 year old male living in Ontario. Last year I paid $1900 or so, this year I got the bill for $6842. Bye bye GS.
What are you guys paying this year compared to last?

Well, as a newly started driver at age 21 I have to pay around 520$ a year.

Full coverage would be 1450$ a year.

Ofcourse that's in Denmark where prices always have been insane (In my opinion)

Greetings, shik.

holy crap thats madness, i pay £98 a year and thats expensive because im on an international licence not a stupid brittish one. do you guys have to have insurance over there??
if not id be tempted to just put asside $50 a week in case something  does happen. if it doesn't you have $2500 at the end of the year to blow on some thing.
i would have thought that the govt would be trying to incourage m/c to save the fossel fuels and all that

Yes, Canadian dollars, because the way the dollar is going it would probly be around 6000 American. I'm in Ontario Canada and I have a perfectly clean driving record. My insurance broker is Kingsway. I read that thread a few weeks ago about Kingsway and other companies putting the GS into the super sport catagory...looks like they really did it. Its the law to have insurance here so I don't think theres a way out of this one. I can't beleive its nearly seven thousand dollars to insure a GS500, it's such a tame little bike.
Does anybody want to buy a 99 GS500 with around 23000 kilo's on it?

Can you not switch to another insurer. I don't know exactly how it works in other countries but over here theres so many insurers to choose from. Im 17 and have been quoted £512. I have a one years no claims bonus and a years experience of riding. I had to shop around though. I've had quotes of near a thousand, some around 750. But £512 is with the insurer's im with on my current bike. If you can shop around i would. Bike insurence differers GREATLY over here. Some places wouldn't quote me on my dads yam thundercat because they won't insure my age on that bike. Some quoted me 750!!! for a bike which will do over 160. Its really crazy is insurence.

I have a `Stupid British License`Most people who live in the UK do! I just paid slightly less than £60 for a years cover. Its a blanket policy that covers me for my 3 present bikes, my GS500,  XT350 and 400/4. Nothing `stupid` about that price!! Mind you insuring them as 10yr+ old classics with limited mileage does help, but 20 years no claims bonus goes even further.

well thats it i havn't got that because im fresh over ther and only on a work visa. i dont get to transfer my no claims across, im not complaining about how much i pay when i see how much chris has to pay.
how the hell do they think that a 17 year old can come up with that sort of cash, i d swich insurers if i were you there must be some one over there who has a much cheaper rate than that

I have Maryland Cycle Direct (actually insured by Interstate Auto Insurance Co)

I pay $77/year and have the max limits (100k/300k).

I also paid my annual bill 3 weeks late (forgot to mail the check) and just got my new card Saturday with no issues.

The insurance comapnies around here won't touch you if your under 25, or alot fo them anyways. I can get my bike through Kingsway because my dad is on it, and we have everythign else under them too. I'll have to call around though, just to make sure.

Umm...I can't believe they jacked it up that much. Seems like it would be some kind of mistake. I would contact them and ask why, and then if they don't give you a better price which would be close to the first price, I would tell them to $#@* theirselves and go elsewhere.

As other threads have said, Kingsway being one of the few to take bikes in Canada blacklisted the GS. They did change it back but w/ 400+ claims and only 2 ppl redoing quotes/renewals. Keep calling and bugging them, if not calla a company called Jevco. It's out of Quebec owned by Kingsway but they have affordable (2000 +/-) rates.

Keep trying and if you still have issues PM me and I can help you out. I've had a lot of contact w/ the companies recently.

Yes, Insurance in Canada is much more expensive... But if you get in an accident... man that health care system sure has its preks! Oh and after an accident... You can't turn around and sue the other driver, your insurance company takes care of you, and their company takes care of them. They say it all balances out in the end, and avoids a hell of a bunch of expensive court time.

I agree that $6000+ is rediculous, but on a motorcycle... if you do get in an accident, you're at much higher risk to have serious injuries than if you had a cage around you.

I pay just under $1000 here in Winnipeg... but that's cause I declared the bike's value at $0 - $1000. The price would go much higher if I declared at the price I actually paid for it... but I only paid $1400 for it, so the insurance cost outweighs the benefit.

Ok, I'm 22.  Have had my endorsement since March.  Baught my GS in March, it's a 95.. I have to pay liability and all that garbage.  $230 for the year.  Again, insurance on a R6 or GSX-R750 was gonna be like 1800 a year through GMAC.  Even at 1800 it's still somewhat affordable and doable for me, keep in mind that was for full coverage too.  But wow, I'd move to the US or something.

That's just insane.  That's like paying the cost of a NEW BIKE every year, just in insurance!    :icon_confused: I guess they want motorcycles off the road!?

Here in Colorado, sportbikes like the CBR F4i, R6 and the like are 14-1600 a year, and that's enough to make me not want to own one right now. My GS costs me $307 a year for 250 comprehensive/collision deductibles with 100k/300k/100k BI/PD limits.

I can't believe you guys north of the border are getting hosed.  Write to your representatives!

Kingsway appears to have sorted out their insanity, but it didn't show up fixed on Kanetix.ca until last week.

Keep calling to get your renewal corrected.... or switch to another company.

Can't believe how much things vary even between Canadian provinces. I'm in Alberta, paying $380 per year for my 05 (I'm 27, clean driving record, but only have my class 6 three weeks), for $1 million liability and comprehensive. My BF pays a little less for his bike, with collision as well, since it's not a sportbike (Kawasaki KLR).

That's not what the several hundred thousand illegal immigrants are saying... they got in, and they're still there!

Conversation between Illegal Immigrant in the US, and the US government:

Illegal Immigrant: "Hi, I'm an illegal immigrant and I think that I should be granted status and be allowed to stay and work in your country... so I'm going to walk thru the street with flags and signs voicing this..."

US Government: "Uhh... do you have any 'Nucular' weapons on you... or are you in any way trying to take our freedom away? Cause we're already busy fighting a useless war against another nation's people."

I think we need to get the iliegals the hell outta here! I'm sorry, but it's true. They come over here, work under the table, take our money back to where ever they came from and spend it there. And while their here, they stop at the doctors office and have a checkup, have a kid, now he's a legal citizen (why?) then they come and go as they please. And they say they do jobs that americans won't do? I call BS! . Also, maybe some american's wouldn't be soo lazy if they weren't getting their unemployment and/or food stamps and so forth!

Anyone seen the news in the past few weeks.... I didn't see any Canadian flags flying during those street protests by the immigrants... There was some red and white... but it was accompanied with some green...  :icon_lol:

I don't know why someone would want to immigrate illegally to the US from Canada... unless they weren't from canada in the first place   :icon_rolleyes: or if they were running from the authorities :nono: I can however understand why someone would want to jump the border from Mexico... where the conditions aren't quite that great for the average joe.

It's not the first time that I've heard an American say that Canadians were trying to jump the border... I figure its just another lie that your government/media is feeding the public to increase fear among the public and in turn increase general pointless hatred and racism.

I think its funny to spend millions, send thousands of our soldiers (and have too many of them die) trying to bring civilisation as we know it to a country which is ruled by religion, where, a man is currently in court, charged with changing religion and is facing the death penalty... BECAUSE HE DOESN'T HAVE THE SAME BELIEFS!!! Freedom as we know it, will never happen there... and it seems that freedom as we are 'fighting for' is no longer present in our own civilization. Racism and hatred between cultures has brought down the freedoms that we believe in (but seldom practice - Freedom of speech and religion for you, means respecting others' speech and religion - Kinda like what happens on this board... )

I'm not just attacking your government... our armies are there too :cookoo:

It's diatrbies like this that lead us to close the northern border.  sheesh

To address the on-topic question you raised though, the reason all the Canadians are coming to America is for our (relatively) cheap insurance rates, our watered down beer, and our unerring sarcasm.

So this seems to have gone a bit offtopic, I guess that can be expected..this IS GSTwins after all. I contact my insurance comapny and they said that indeed the GS has been moved back to where it was before, and a new bill will be coming in the mail shortly for around $2500. Still a little steep, but thats Ontario insurance. I'll check out riders plus though.

Now that you've explained how Canadian insurance works, it makes sense why yours costs so much.  If you're own insurance company pays for you to get fixed up, it's no wonder it costs so much on a bike.  Think about it.  You're a lot more likely to sustain serious injury in a bike accident rather than a car accident.  If you're company is paying your medical bills, it's just gonna have to charge bikers more.  Here in the USA, we must have some bikers in the legislature- all the cages are paying the extra premium for us  :icon_mrgreen:

BaoQingTian, I can actually inform you, that here in DK, we have to pay shitloads of $ for our 2 wheels. (I had to pay around 5150US $ for my GS500E from 93 with 50.500km on it - And that's cheap).

Apart from that we have our taxes and shaZam! (I pay 40% in taxes), which pays for all medical expenses in case something goes wrong, and we need medical treatment. That covers in most of Europe, and i think it covers in the states too, if im not there for more than 1 month at a time.

Also, i have to pay 500$ a year for insurance on my GS. Where a car would be 2000$ a year, that is as a newly started driver btw.

So maybe the canadians are just getting buttf*cked!

Just my 5 cents.

Greetz, shik.

Chris_B,

If you haven't gone through the riders plus website yet - just a little background on them.  They're a broker out of T.O. but service a bunch of areas all over Canada.  They specialize in motorcycles and are run by riders, so they 'understand' us better then other insurance companies who don't get into or shy away from bikes.

Kingsway used to be their exclusive insurance provider up until this year.  Their relationship with riders plus ended, because riders plus introduced another insurance company, Echelon General (a stable Canadian company and their new exclusive provider) in order to keep their rates competitive.  Kingsway didn't like that and cancelled riders plus.  This is all documented on their website.

This part I'm interpreting, but I read that as Kingsway fearing not be able to be competitive and loose business (ie: rates were higher then the competition) -  why else would anyone turn away business?

Anyway, they feel that Echelon would equal or come in cheaper then plans offered by Kingsway (also documented on their website), which is why I made the suggestion originally.  I understand every individual profile is different, but thought it worth a shot anyway.  Again, good luck.

But in Canada they have "free" health care. So what's it matter what happens on a bike or in a car, doesn't that health care pay for any injuries?

Now that you've explained how Canadian insurance works, it makes sense why yours costs so much.  If you're own insurance company pays for you to get fixed up, it's no wonder it costs so much on a bike.  Think about it.  You're a lot more likely to sustain serious injury in a bike accident rather than a car accident.  If you're company is paying your medical bills, it's just gonna have to charge bikers more.  Here in the USA, we must have some bikers in the legislature- all the cages are paying the extra premium for us  :icon_mrgreen:

Umm no its not 'free'... someone has to pay for it :cookoo:

In most cases, our taxes pay for the small stuff... some provinces charge a yearly fee... but there's a limit to that too....

Yikes.  I pay 290 a year for full coverage, but I am 22 annd it's an '89.

why???
in two years time you could pay for another GS.....cheap assed bike....get cheap assed insurance

Because my health insurance will not cover motorcycle accidents (sucks), but my bike insurance will.  It doesn't matter anyway I plan on purchasing a Triumph Daytona 675 in December.  Too bad I'll be paying 1600 a year for that.

Yeah, I know it isn't free, that's why I did this " ". Because people say it's free. The taxes up there are insane. My friend lived up there for a few months and he said everything was very very expensive. Even the grocery stores charge to park in their parking lot he said. And sales taxs is something like 12%???

Only 15% joedude?

Can hear you've never been in a scandinavian country.. 15% is like nothing.

At work if i get 100dkk (17$) an hour. They want 40% taxes. So i end up getting something like 10$ in the end.

That's in Denmark. Norway pay less taxes. But their groceries etc are taxed the hell outta them..  :cookoo:

Though, we got all the "free" stuff in our countries.

Right now living in Oregon where there isn't a sales tax I pay about 11-15% in income taxes.... ghay.  If I still lived in Washington I wouldn't have to pay income tax, but I would have to pay a 7.7% sales tax.  Pick and choose.

I'm talking about sales tax here... Tax on everything purchased... I also get about 40% of my paycheck yanked from me... and that too goes right to the government.

RE: Bike Insurance
   - His Insurance Premium was only going to be that high with one Company (Kingsway) and that is cause they re-classified the GS500 as a Supersport.  The backlask was quite high so they have reversed that decision.  If you stay with Kingsway it should be back down to a more normal rate.  My friend got quoted $4300 w/ Kingsway but with other Companies was getting quotes in the $1300-$1500 range.

RE: Sales Tax
   -   Someone said they had to pay to park at the Grocery Store?!?  I have never seen that and I lived in Canada my whole life.  LOL

Living in Oregon wouldn't suck so much if we didn't have all these dumb a#! people here. Like Sleepy Ted K that went to Washington to talk with the president of mexico telling him that Oregon wants to be friends with them, and that the national guard at the border is a bad idea. He said we need to keep oregon's national guardsmen in oregon, to fight fires, and that their job isn't to protect our borders. And why have national gas prices dropped, but Oregon's gas prices have gone up?

Hmm, yeah, salestax is a Buddha Loves You, here it's 25% on normal stuff.

Vehicles though, got some higher salestax. Not sure how much it is. But i can tell you that a brandnew GS500 without fairing cost 10.000$
The fairing would cost you another 1724$.

To get back on topic. Why the hell put the GS in sportsclass? Damn, aren't they normal? It's just a nice little bike, good all around.
Good they changed it back, and lets hear what they changed your insurance bill too.

And now i'll sit back and enjoy a cup of coffee after a 200km trip with 30 other ppl, just out having fun (not all on GS500's though :( )

Well, after reading whoever posted that Kingsway reveresed their decision to list the GS as a supersport effective May 17th. I called them up and my new bill is in the mail for $2487. Which is alot more reasonable. And I'm pretty sure ridersplus wont insurance you if your under 25, which I am. But I'll check it out. I get to keep my bike :)

It was actually kind of retarded.
If I understood the situation correctly, Kingsway has taken a beating due to Motorcycle Accidents.  Now instead of adding a surcharge for being in a particular age category and attacking the problem that way they decided to re-classify the type of Bikes new riders were going for.  GS500, Katana 600, Ninja 250.

Silly...

Well...the Brokers all went back to Kingsway saying that riders were pissed off.  I know alot of people who left Kingsway and went to other Insurance Companies.  I won't even bother getting a quote from them.  www.easywayinsurance.com is probably who I will go with but some Broker named Jerry Kaspard was pretty good too (I think he was putting me with JevCo).

Glad to hear your Bill is much lower.

Well it came today. I'm a 17 year old male living in Ontario. Last year I paid $1900 or so, this year I got the bill for $6842. Bye bye GS.
What are you guys paying this year compared to last?

I'd definitely call around to a few other insurance companies. That is bloody ridiculous!
I'm 25, which makes a difference, but still, I  only pay about 630 for the year through State Farm for full coverage.

My buddy bought a 1200cc buell, for his very first bike, and he's only paying a little over 2 grand a year.

Here in Aus I had a range of quotes from $280 to $450... "mature age" rider that I am! I found that working together with the insurance company to reduce the risk made a big difference, for example talking about how the bike is garaged, locked, how often ridden, where etc. Premium came down quite a bit for lock up off street storage, non-commuting use, less than 8k km per year, etc
