Title: Leaking oil from shifter rod!!!
Post by: dkwild69 on May 28, 2006, 03:26:41 AM
Hi all, anyone have this problem and how easy to fix this?...also should I be concern with other area that might be leaking too? OK here is the situation, the past couple of months I'd noticed a few drop of oil where the front sprocket and the side stand is...at first I thought its the residual oil flung off from the chain lube. anyway it gotten worse the past 2 weeks, with each trip I notice alot of oil dripping and running down the side stand, I opened the cover to the front sprocket and wipe clean the inside....what I noticed is oil leaks out of the rubber seal on the shifter rod...and the seal is some what loose and crooket, I pushed it back in until its snug against the engine thinking thats the fix, I put back everything and took it for a test ride, only to get more oil spilling out, dripping at even a higher rate, my back tire is covered with oil...HELP!!!

Well, you gotta replace that seal, no way around it. It can be kinda difficult to get out. Drilling two holes in it and screwing in parker screws gives you a handle to yank it out.

make sure that the seal isn't just pushed out... i had the same problem with my gs... I took of the metal cover that goes around the rod and covers the seals and found that it was just (the seal that is) pushed out.  I pushed it back in with my fingers and tapped it a few times iwth a small hammer and no more leak for me!  Just check that first... then follow the above advice!

Let me get this straight, the rubber seal can be yank/pull out and then get a new one and pop it back in?...if I pull out the rubber seal wouldn't the oil start to pour out from there?...does anyone have a part number or know how much that seal is?

I know that oil does not come out when you remove the pushrod with the bike on the centertstand. So if you lean her over ever so slightly to the right side against some solid, padded support you should definitely be safe.

You have to remove a sheet metal cover to take the seal out. That cover has bent flaps securing its fastening screws that first have to be folded down.

The seal should set you back around ten bucks if the prices we pay in Europe are any indication.

The seal seems to be around $5 (not including shipping) from the vendors on the Parts Fiche Links (http://www.bbburma.net/Documents/GS500_Parts_Fiche_1.html) page.  (in the CLUTCH section.)
