Hey,
thatguy1025, 3imo, Reddog787, egaeus: Who all wants to ride together? Any meeting spots in mind? My route goes through Montgomery and up to Atlanta then North on I-85. Anyone find camping places yet?

There's always the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.  The Dragon borders it.  Looking at the map, the best sites would be Look Rock and Abrams Creek.  Cades Cove is close too, but there's no good way out.  If you want a bit more riding, Elkmont looks good, as there's a quite twisty road on the way out toward the Dragon.  With both Cades Cove and Elkmont, the shortest way to the Dragon involves a ~10 mile gravel road....

Cades Cove and Elkmont take reservations .  Look Rock and Abrams Creek are first come, first served.  Up to 2 tents and 6 people per campsite, so we could share one.  $14/night.  Abrams is a very small campground but the other 3 have more sites available.

Edit: and as far as meeting on the way, I thought about it, but then realized that i plan on going up Thursday after work.  I don't think that would fit in y'all's schedule.

I have to be in Savanah on a business trip starting tomorrow.  It is scheduled till the 8th.   If we get back early I will definitely go.
If not, its a maybe.

I will try to check up on you guys while I'm in Savanah.
So make plans as if I'll be meeting up with you.

I just got back today from up there and I crashed along with about 20 others due to oil on the road.
3 riders were killed during the weekend.
I had fun though.
Don't know if I can make it, still busted up, and looks like no one really knows if they're going.
If I go it will be at the last min.
Maybe by then people can nail down their plans.

I read about that on dealsgap.com the guy was saying a truck broke down and sprayed tranny oil all over the road causing a few accidents. Did you ride it home?

I was kind of hoping to leave thursday to get more time out of it, so that sounds good. If we met midday in Mongomery I dont think we'd make it to Deals Gap before night fall, are you riding and camping too? If so I guess we could find an alternate place to crash then get there w/ day to burn on Friday.

All that damn planning and hoping and I'm not going to be able to make this trip.  Is it the bike?  No, it still needs a bit of work, but it's more than capable of riding the dragon at my skill level (low).  It's my neighbor and probable future roommate.  I promised her that I'd help her with her 6-week statistics class, and she has a test and a final next week.  I'm going to be doing statistics and probability this weekend instead of look, press and roll.  Priorities, priorities....

At least you have a 0.990 confidence level with a high level of alpha significance for a "one tailed test" over the course of a large standard normal distribution sample ~ If ya know what I mean  ;)

Can we do a sound off check to see who all is going?  Just give a post if you'll be there - I guess some will be leaving Thur or so.  I need to see if I need to pack.

lifes a Buddha Loves You.

My trip to OKLAHOMA was cancelled.
I sat at home with my thumb up my ass, daydreaming about twisties.

-------

Anyway, for you guys around this area, how about a trip to Barbers vintage motorsports museum. www.barbermuseum.org

They even have track days for those of you so inclined. Its a three hour trip from my neck of the woods.

I heard the museum is top notch and the largest in the world.   Anyone interested in making a trip up there?
it is in BIRMINGHAM, AL

Birmingham also has some nice twisties.  Not Deal's Gap (don't get me started on my weekend....) but much better than the Gulf coast.

Now, I've not actually driven in TN except for the slab, but doesn't the yellow line mean the same thing there as it does here, especially on blind curves, which seem to be all there are on the Dragon.

Title: Re: Deals Gap Ride ALABAMA folks
Post by: Egaeus on June 14, 2006, 07:37:03 PM
Well, you did a bit sometimes, but I was mainly referring to that truck you were behind.  That guy was straightening out all the curves.  Start at about 5:15 or so.  Damn....
Title: Re: Deals Gap Ride ALABAMA folks
Post by: rangerbrown on June 14, 2006, 07:46:13 PM
o yea the truck well the turns are just that sharp, there is no other way for them to get through there. which is bad.
Title: Re: Deals Gap Ride ALABAMA folks
Post by: Egaeus on June 14, 2006, 07:54:23 PM
While I can understand the trailer crossing the line a bit sometimes because of an exceptionally sharp turn, there's no reason that the front tires should have been doing at all.
Title: Re: Deals Gap Ride ALABAMA folks
Post by: Reddog787 on June 14, 2006, 08:27:18 PM
I guess you're talking about an 18 wheeler - If so,
You really have to watch one go through there to understand.  If the truck stays in its lane then it will get stuck by the trailer going onto the shoulder which in 90% of the dragon is a 30 ft drop off.  Check out the trucks section on tailofthedragon.com which may help
