Title: what is your Mileage
Post by: rangerbrown on May 29, 2006, 01:50:59 PM
so what is the current mileage on you GS500 (E-F)
list in this order,
starting mileage (when you got it) year, mileage, major repairs (all but lights, tires, chain) and lastly what you hope to get out if it.

i will start,
got with 1700 miles in Aug 05.  it is a GS500F 2004, currently at 12000 miles.
rear brake pads replaced, pre owner used only them i guess. oil changes every 3k

what i hope to get out of this is a brake down of how the gs holds up. and to see what i may have to look forward to doing Maintenance  wise. and what the avg is so that i can plan for it.

what are your thoughts? i want to get about 30k on mine this year

Mine's a 2004 f model.  I got it last fall with 1500 miles.  It is now just shy of 6000 miles.  I've only done a valve cover gasket change, but it may not have needed it.  I just did it just in case.

I'm gonna porbably get to around 10K - 15K miles by the end of the summer before I get a new bike.  I've decided to get one then, cause the prices will drop dramatically at the end of the season.

Bought it in August of '04 with 5,000 miles on it.
Got knocked over a few weeks later and spent a month in the shop (was dealing with the guy's insurance). Repairs: handlebars and barend weights (payed off the bike with the rest of the insurance money).
Lowside at TWS in December, a sat for a month while getting parts and on vacation. Repairs: new tank, new bars, new barends, new tachometer and housing, new front brake line.
Mileage as of now, a few miles under 12,000. So for 8 months of riding (2 months of down and out) I've put 7,000 miles on it. The summer is here, so that number will be increasing a lot, I hope.

I hope to get at least another 7,000 out of her this year, but we'll see how everything works out. Looking into other bikes for next year...

1999 GS500E, bought in Mar 2000 with ~1,850 miles.  Currently at 36,375 miles.  (10-mile round-trip commute for first 5 years, now a 2.3 round trip ... so I try to walk!)

At 6,420 miles: replaced left engine cover, headlight, gauges, handlebars, etc. after broadsiding a cow at ~50mph.

Since then: replaced brake pads (twice each), rotors (once each), front sprocket (once or twice), fork seals (twice?), various levers and cables.  Adjusted valves 2 or 3 times (checked them 5 or 6 times).

Had an ignition problem caused by using baking soda solution on the battery terminals with the battery in the bike  :nono: (corroded a connector below the battery box).

I hope to get at least 45,000 miles out of Ole Yeller ... more if I can get myself to do the necessary engine work when the time comes.

Bought my '04 in July of '04 with 0 miles on it. I am juuuust about to hit my 10,000 mile mark (less than 100 miles to go!). No major repairs yet. I try to stick to the maintenance schedule the best I can. Right now, I need new tires (still running on factory front tire..eek).

I am not sure how much more I hope to get out of it.  I'd like to think a lot  :icon_mrgreen:

When it comes time to replace it, I'll either get a cruiser (like a Boulevard!), a Katana or SV, or another GS500.

460 miles since I bought it. Had 12,2XX on the clock at purchase. I doubt the previous owner did much at all, bike held up great.

Things I've done:
Carb disassembly/cleaning
Tank Flush
Fork Seals
Modify Petcock
Replace Rectifier

Needs:
More petcock attention
Fork oil level correction
Tachometer cable
Carb balance (Don't even ask why, never leave a friend alone with your running bike for even 2 seconds.)
Chain?
New gaskets

I got a real winner, LOL. Obviously I've been fighting my way uphill.

Bought my '01 with ~12k on it...  I'm right around ~18k...

I used to commute 30 miles a day on it...  Now my commute is about 1.5 miles...  And I usually drive the car with the wife.

Apr 2005, got my 2004 GS500F used.  It had 5,200km on it.  As part of delivering it, the dealer did the 6,000km service.

Jun 2005, 11,000km, changed the oil and filter

Aug 2005, 13,000km, leaking rear shock... replaced with a new one (Suzuki paid most of it)

Oct 2005, 16,000km, changed the oil and filter

Apr 2006, 16,000km, new rear tire, new battery (my fault), new brake fluid, new air filter, new spark plugs, valve clearance and carb sync.

2003 bike (GS500E) bought in Sept 2004 with 500 kms (350mi)
1000 km first suzuki service (and last, given the cost of changing oil and filter)
5500 km (3400mi) change the crappy original tyres for Bridgestone BT45's
7000 km (4400mi) change oil and filter. chek valve clearance (swapped shims). changed front sprocket (17teeth)
12000 km (7500mi) change leaky valve head cover gasket check sparkplugs
15700 km (9800mi) Now: expecting new BT45 tyres

Just came back from a 9-day 2400km trip around Croatia. Not a hickup!  :thumb:
so about 15200 kms in 20 months....  and many more I hope!

Bought my 02 GS500 in Sept 03 with about 4500 miles on it and it now has about 38,000 miles on it for a total of about 118k GS500 miles on me.   :)

Just put 2nd replacement chain and front sprocket on this month.  Put HH pads on recently and they are the 2nd set of front and 4th set of rear pads I've put on.

My current Lasertecs are the third set of tires I've put on this bike.  Oil changes every 2-3k miles and spark plugs every 6k and a replacement air filter.  Also replaced the rear shock, a broken exhaust valve, and added Pingel rear links.  Replaced 1 headlight and 2 tail light bulbs so far.

Have a Plexi 2 windshield on now and usually change it to a smaller Spitfire for the summer.  Added a Givi rear trunk the spring of 04.

Sure glad I get 60 mpg riding around all day.   :thumb:

Bought a '01 in '03 with 1500mi.
Oil changes at 4500, 7500, 9000.  New tires at ~7000.  Brake flush somewhere in there.
Regular chain maintenance (every 500-1000 miles).
Now at 9800.  Thinking about valves and jetting but no time right now.

Only riding to work, because my wife doesn't feel confident to ride with a bun in the oven. :)

2001 gs500. 425 miles when purchased, 9,500 miles 16 months later when sold. oil/filter changes every 3k miles and that was it, except one fuse that blew-caused by my 80w/80 replacement headlight bulb.
what I hoped to get and got was good riding skills, which I promptly applied to my 600rr.
