Title: So I dropped my GS500...
Post by: lowside on May 31, 2006, 10:40:47 AM
I was on a gravel parking lot that was on an incline, and tried to slow down but locked my front wheel instead and my bike went down. Learned my lesson (I can point out quite a few things I did wrong). Anyway, it resulted in bending the right side of my handlebar - I should be able to bend it back out (after I take the bar off of course) - and scraping off my right engine cover decal! I guess it turns out that the cover (not the part that's bolted on, but the thin metal Suzuki "decal" cover part) is glued on? Now I can see a hole in the engine cover (it's supposed to be there, I believe, unless I punched a perfect hole in it with a rock) and a spinning part when the engine is running. Fun. So, now that this has happened, do I need to worry if there's any dirt that had gotten in there? Do I just glue the decal back on and everything is hunky-dory?

I've been missing that piece a couple days now too... I hope it isn't important. I need to get some duct tape to cover that up...

If you worry that you got gravel in there just take the cover off to check. Only the timing mechnism for ignition behind; no access to the motor innards proper (i.e. no oil).

I was going to post another post about how it doesn't really matter, but it should be covered, but then I thought that it would be a little too cliche to say the same thing as everyone else.   :icon_mrgreen:

Hehe, cool, so I don't really have anything to worry about. Thanks for the responses.

Indeed... I thought I might as well be honest with myself. Heh.

I might as well post up my lessons learned... the next time I decide to turn my bike around on a gravel parking lot...  :cookoo:
1. If I don't know what I'm doing (I started last August - I've ridden through the winter rain, but never on dirt), I shouldn't be bringing a streetbike on a gravel lot in the first place (especially if the lot is on an incline)
2. My guess is if I knew how to ride a dirt bike (but I don't), or if I had thought about it thoroughly beforehand, I would have known to keep the bike in first gear, crawl through the turn, and brake with the rear brakes since I'm such a noob (an attempt to brake with the front brakes is what brought me down - I didn't even brake really hard at all!)

So, yeah, there you go.

 <- Me
