Title: The GS running on veggie oil
Post by: annguyen1981 on June 02, 2006, 11:20:56 PM
Anyone got any ideas?  I've heard about some cars being converted and the power stayed the same...  the only diff was the $$$ saved and the cleaner emissions.

Diesel engines running on recycled vegetable oil is getting quite common here, filter it to get the food residues out and add about 3% white spirit then ride through your town centre and spread the smell of fries. I believe a certain Mr Otto Diesel invented his engine about1910 to run on vegatable oil, it was only later when fossil fuels became abundantly available, well you know the story.....

You could, in theory anyway, run a petrol engine on spirit made from just about any brewed and distilled vegetable matter but you might attract the attention of your local law enforcement and tax gatherers re moonshine, poteen, applejack or whatever, if you are tempted to tipple don't get your ethanols and methanols mixed up you could end up blind or dead or something....hic!

The first diesel engine was designed to run on peanut oil. Ethanol is a hoax - it's still primarily gasoline.  The problem with a veggie diesel is that in order to run straight veggie oil, you'd have to preheat it to 160 F. If you want to start normal, you have to start with diesel until it's warmed up, switch to the veggie oil, and then switch back to diesel before turning off the car so veggie oil isn't in the fuel lines. A bit too much hassle for most. Though an entirely viable option as a fuel alternative, it would make so much since, you won't see it being marketed anytime soon. Oil companies will see to that.

I think you should keep us posted on that project of yours. I'd be interesting in reading more about it and seeing pics  :thumb:

yeah, for the northern states that have cold weather, ive seen em run down here in SouthFlorida  cut with about 25% diesel and still fire up cold in 47* weather without issue.

With diesel mixed in, the oil will combust at a lower temperature, but that's the minimum temp no matter what the climate to run 100% veggie oil.

Hmm, so you could inject fuel with the veggies, to get it started, and then stop once it reached operating temp. I know the 80's corvette's have an extra fuel injector for when it was cold. Same idea, different fuel system. Then again, you would have not only two gas tanks, but two types of gas.. what a pain.

You have 2 tanks 1 diesel and 1 vegge .The vegge tank has anti freeze lines running through if for heat transfer, also has a heated feul filter. The tanks have seperate feul lines that go to 12volt valves that switch between the two feules. After the valves 2 sets of fuel lines goto the injector pump. The idea is to start the car on diesel till operating temp then switch to vegge, before shutting the car off swith back to diesel and run for 2 minuets so upon next start up it starts on diesel

That would be ok, IF it was all automatic. I would hate to have to idle 2 mins all the time before I could leave the car. Also, if you forgot, .. I donno what would happen, but it would suck.

Its not realy about convenience or something everyone would want do do,but the concept of driving around for free on a byproduct of fast food is worth it.Most food places have to pay to get rid of used oil so some may give it away for free.Even if you get it for free you have to filter it before you can use.So yes it would take some time to do this but not paying for gas is even better

a friend of mine back in nz, had a deisel gokart that he used to run on chip fat, it was an old john dere deisel engine from a ride on lawn mower, i think it was like 33hp or something, i think it was like a 650cc 3 cylinder not to sure, it wasn't terribly fast but im sure he could have geared it better than he did. that could be an option for some one who wants to do a conversion.

A huge part of the rational for my partner and I purchasing a diesel vehicle is that we plan to run it on bio-diesel, not quite the same as pure veggie oil, but the same idea... taking a waste product and making it into fuel, instead of being dependant on the fuel companies. There is a co-op here in Calgary you can join and then make bio-diesel at their facility for 35 cents a litre (regular diesel is about 96 a litre right now).

The biggest drawback, here in Canada, is that bio-diesel freezes, so in the winter it has to be mixed with regular diesel. Still, anything is better than being totally dependant on fossil fuels.

We're going to let the warranty run out on our diesel Jeep first though.
