Gday, I recent purchase a 2002 GS500E that i have a few questions about.
I believe the Exhaust is an issue as it is incredibly load and when looking into it with a torch i can see a few piece's of material/wire sticking out of one hole.
i think that the baffles have gone. I took out the airfilter and it was covered in petrol on the side that faces the carbs.
Is this an indication that the bike has been rejetted.
It doesn't return to idle like it should either as when you rev it it sort of hangs and slowly drops back to idle.
Then other times it will rev up to 4,000 and sit there. even though the idle was set around 2,000
(All this is happening when the choke is off as well.)
** When i removed the airfilter and placed the K&N out of my dads bike, No Restrictor and larger opening then stock. Probably around a 2.5" opening it seemed to run better but sounded a little odd while riding, almost like it was running lean. I Haven't ridden it since**
Waiting to get a new K&N airfilter that suits my bike.
Any Ideas as to whether its modified or not.

I'm not an expert, so you might wait for them, but if they gutted the muffler, and didn't change anything else, it would be extra lean I think. They come lean, so that would make it worse. The petrol (gas ;)) might be caused by over flowing floats? (maybe? someone chime in) Or maybe backfireing through the carbs?
I would clean it, then ride around. Listen for it fireing though the carbs, and after check the filter. See if gas got on it again. Otherwise, you don't know if someone just spilt some on it.
I am pretty sure that if you reduce the flow resistance caused by the exahust and the filter you need to rejet. Maybe they didn't.

Also, with removing the restriction on both ends, this produces more airflow through the engine does it not.
Then with more air flow wouldn't there be more vaccum on the jets allowing more fuel to flow causing the A/F Ratios to stay the same up to a given point where the jets can't flow anymore.
I just think that suzuki would have allowed for a few modifications, wouldn't they??

More airflow = LEAN... more vacuum won't pull more fuel.. new jets needed for that. Suzuki didn't allow for CRAP... Also, wait for more expert opinions, I'm just an idiot nood with no bike!

Idle should be set to 1200.
the "hanging" idle is a sign of one of two things (from what I have gleaned here). either its lean (as in all US bikes are lean from the factory-dont know how it is in your country [aka the petrol]) or its got a vacuum leak.

Better yet, since you have a 2002, check your bike against the photo below. If the brass caps labeled "Mixture Screw" have been removed, someone has been fiddling with the screws hiding behind them.
BTW, the photo shows the carbs with the float bowls removed. You should be able to inspect the Mixture Screw caps without removing the bowls.

No caps on any of the adjustable screws.
I just noticed that with my dads K&N Filter in it returns to the idle RPM alot quicker.
Is there anyway of telling what jets have been installed without pulling the carbs apart.
Nope. The numbers are stamped into the faces of the jets (the opposite side of the threads). I guess the only other way you could tell (without disassembly) is if the previous owner documented the changes he did.
Unfortunately, he didn't write anything down in the owners manual.
Will have to try and get in touch with him from the bike shop. Don't know if they will let me talk with him though.
