Title: So I was sitting around feeling like an ass...rant...
Post by: makenzie71 on June 08, 2006, 11:37:19 PM
Well I'm not really a supervisor here, but I have one employee under me...my relief nightwatchman.  He's the guy that does my job, essentially, when I don't want to:  weekends and vacation, mostly.  It's essentially his job to cover the shift any time I can't and I can pretty much take off whenever I want, but I don't.  I stick to the normal schedule and take an occasional Sunday or Thursday off as a vacation day.  Last year I took 6 vacation days (out of the 14 I had).  Now, any time this guy needs off it pretty much leaves me working at least 12 days straight...which I don't have a very physically demanding job, but it's extremely demanding of my time (normal week is 70 hours)...so essentially on the days that I work I get very little done (see the threads about my yard, etc).  Anyway, you get the idea and I'm just rambling now...

Well about a month ago this guy says he needs a day off the next weekend...I have no problem so make the arrangements and I just take one day off.  Then the next weekend he has off because he's going deep sea fishing with his daughter.  Completely fine...he even had that one planned for about 2 months and I was happy to let him have it.  But this time off he's had kinda screwed up my productivity with getting parts out and getting projects done and it's really caused havoc with seeing Kalee (the REAL problem).  So after he gets back I call him up ask him if he can work last Sunday so I could take a vacation day (I would have gven more notice but I didn't want to bother him on his own family trip).  He says no problem but that he needs some time off in July.

This is where a problem starts.  He says he has a family reunion to attend ad they're supposed to leave June 29th and he won't be back until 6th.  This really wouldn't have been a problem ANY other weeknd (except Dec 31/Jan 1).  I've worked EVERY holiday since 2002 except New Year's Eve.  I even worked the 13 days before last New Year's Eve so he could spend more time with his family.  This year, though, I've been looking foward to hooking up with my buddies and having a little cook out for a long time...and we wanted get together the weekend before.  If I have to give that up, which I would have done happily, all I wanted was for him to come in the fourth so I could go see the fireworks with Kalee.  That's 2 days for one on his part...he still gets paid for two.  I thought it was a good idea...

Nope.

He says he wants to go because he missed the last reunion (4 months ago...?).  I tell him essentially that I can't work both the weekend and the fourth.  He says he needs to go because "he has cancer" and needs to spend time with his family.  First, he doesn't know if he has cancer...second, it's not my fault...third, I don't really care (I think that's the part that people call me an @$$hole for).  I do want him to be able to go, though, so I try to figure out why he can't just come back a couple days early.  He says he can't because he's going with someone else and they're going the 29th through the 6th...and that he can't afford fuel to go on his own.  Being the ass that I am, I offer to pay his fuel.  Nope.  He just doesn't want to hear it.  He gets pissed off and just says he won't go.  I guess he didn't really want to go anyway...

I mean really...if he did it my way he'd have gotten to go to his family reunion, he have gotten an extra day's pay (plus another extra day for July 4, holiday pay) and I'd have paid for his fuel.  He just says no.  On top of that he manages to tell his wife he's not swapping anymore with me before the line disconnects.

I'm such an @$$hole...right?  I hate employees...

Mak I wouldnt say your being an ass.  I and my coworkers on my shift have had  similar issues  with people calling off the other night shift and us having to come in on little to no notice, which means we end up working a millions days in a row and cant get the stuff we need to get done.  IT always seems that someone on the other shift has a family emergency on our long weekend off.  As far as getting sceduled time off you only get it if someone agrees to cover for you, so if you piss us off by calling in too much you wont get any days off you really want.....  You're not being an ass.  He needs to not be so irresponsible and definatley needs to stop taking advantage of your kindness.

passive-aggressive personality. fcuk him. you've done more than one can expect from a coworker (supervisor?). you gave him options, he said his way or nothing. fine, nothing it is...

I occasionally have employees like that.   I had one guy who was always asking for holiday weekends off, which is something you just don't get in my line of work.   All of our "busy" times are around holiday weekends.   He would always give me an attitude and get all pouty when I told him no way in hell could he have the holiday weekend off.    He would also constantly have to leave town for "funerals".   He had the biggest family in the world!   At least once every 2 months, his brother's daughter's cousin's grandbrother's uncle died and he just had to leave town TODAY.   "When is the funeral?" I would ask.   "Next Saturday."   I was prohibited from asking that anymore because it was somehow racist to ask the guy why he needed 7 days off every time there was a funeral in his family.

He eventually transferred out (after bad-mouthing me to my boss) and I was happy to see him go!    :thumb:

Mak, you did the right thing, you put the ball in his court, he caught it, looked at it, and dropped it.  Hope you feel better.

You realize what happened, right? He had a tantrum!  :cookoo:  Enjoy your time off; you did everything you could....so...why is it that he's still working there??

Even though it's a minimal-responsibillity, cushy ass job, due to it's hours it's really hard position to fill and I would be working for 3 or 4 weeks straight with no break trying to find a replacement.
