Title: Lake Superior
Post by: Emmajoe on June 10, 2006, 04:10:15 AM
Well, my girlfriend and I are leaving for a week to circle Lake Superior. I was curious if any of you have done it, or part of it and have any recommendations of places to stop or things to do?

I've done parts.  try this link  http://www.lakesuperiorcircletour.com/

I like the Amethyst mines just outside of Thunder Bay.  also check out copper harbor in Mich and ride the road against the lake.  Eagle River is one of my favorite small towns.  If you have time, ride hwy 1 from MN 61? to Ely ( a gorgeous road).

Also consider stopping at Aerostich in Duluth for a 10% walk in discount.

Going up the Keweenaw Penninsula in the UP take 41 (Up the middle) one way and 26(along the lakeshore) the other, both are great roads.  Never been there, but I hear the Jampot (on 26) is a great place to stop for muffins and other baked goods.  If you have time (one week should be plenty) I would stop for a Copper mine tour.  I've taken a tour at Quincy and it was cool.  I went to Michigan Tech, I love that area

... but, I've been meaning to read the book "Lake Effect" by Mike Savage.

Sorry to thread jack, but is that the same as Michael Savage with the radio show and who wrote books such as 'Liberalism is a Mental Disorder' and 'The Savage Nation'?

Neat places-
Montreal River Harbor, maybe an hour north of Sault St Marie-  Just south of the bridge, there is a dirt road that leads towards the lake.  Mad Moose Lodge is at the end of the road.  Excellent (simple) food, rooms, cabins, camping, showers.  I can't remember the names of the owners, but they are cool.  Excellent rock climbing nearby.

Sand River is a little farther north, beautifull hikes along the river.

The area between the Soo & Wawa is like a big, gorgeous, playground!

Take your time & enjoy!!    :thumb:
