Hey Folks,
Trying to decide on some hard luggage for my GS and wondered if anyone out there has some photos to share of their GS's with the luggage mounted.
I am looking to do side bags and a top box and want to know what kind of success people have had. I do not want soft bags since I want to be able to lock the boxes when commuting or touring. I am leaning towards SW-Motech or Krauser products right now.
C'mon, post some pics. :)
I'm supposed to be getting my Givi rack and luggage (only a top case - Givi E46, I think). I'll take some pics once I've got it. I just wanted something to keep my helmet and gloves in when I go anywhere.

This may be a stupid comment, but do you realize that the GS has a helmet holder built in? I had my GS for a good two months before I realized it...
It's located under the seat. Take the seat off, and you'll see one metal tab on each side. Regarding your gloves, you can store them under the seat, or in your helmet. :thumb:
Is it for a full face helmet? How would it hold it?? These types of things are why I wish I had an owners manual...
You hook the D-ring onto it, then when you lock your seat back on, it can't go anywhere. The only risk is if it rains while you are away, but just keep your face sheild closed. :thumb:
The manual only showed the position of the two tabs. Not HOW to put the helmet on...
In terms of putting the helmet on, see Amanda's post
Umm... Which post?
OOPS!
Sorry
The above post...
I'm not quite sure why I mentioned that, considering her's is above mine.
I would still like to see a GS (other than Kerry's <not that your bike isn't the bee's knees Kerry>) in dress. I know that SOMEONE has the right mix of size to function that I'm looking for in the case that I need to do a few overnights.
Dig this setup (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=10536.msg91382#msg91382)!
Unfortunately, Steve-C's last logon was in March (if you're thinking of asking him questions via PM). But his profile shows both an MSN address and a website that may help you get in touch with him.
you'll get steve on www.gs500e.co.uk hes on every day, but has got rid of his gs now and rides a bmw just cause of the miles he does, and of course he has storage up to the hilt on his beemer
nice guy, i met him at one of the bbqs he'll help you out if you have some questions
Hi,
I've had a GIVI monorack and hard bag for some years now. Mine is the low-end model, just enough for 2 full size helmets (integral).
This is the way it looks (during a recent trip to Croatia):

after arrival back home (2400 km of mixed roads, the box heavily loaded with tools and other stuff)

I'd recommend the Givi box. It's taken its share of beating-up...
regards,
Thanks for the pic, jsamaniego.
The Givi box gets a lot of props. What about hard side bags? Anyone have experience with these? I also wonder about that windshield you have there. Looks great! What brand?
Let's see more pics!!!
Here's a pic of my 02 GS sitting in Maggie Valley, NC about 600 miles from home last year. It's a Givi E33 that held clothes for a week plus extra shoes, shaving gear, etc. I also used a JR Sport tankbag for extra gloves, raingear, tire plugs and pump, etc and left the saddlebags at home. I bungied a rollbag on top of the Givi to carry an extra JR jacket. I find saddlebags getting inconvenient in getting off and on the bike now due to increasing arthritis.

That's a Slipstreamer Spitfire windshield I put on in the summer. Gives just enough coverage to make highway travel comfortable and still gives plenty of wind in the face, etc. The National Cycle Plexi 2 windshield I use fall, winter, and spring gives much better protection in cold and rain. It rained so often and so hard last trip that I don't think I'd travel again without the Plexi 2.
The E33 is a nice size for everyday use and I use it for daily riding about without any other luggage necessary. It will hold a full face helmet, gloves, etc but I just use the helmet lock and the Givi for other stuff including a few things I pick up at the grocery store.
I mounted the E33 to the Suzuki factory rack I had on the bike already and had to add some bracing. I like how it mounts as low and far forward as possible. Looks better than sticking up and out behind on the Givi mount. The SW-Motech rack should hold it in a similar position w/o requiring the extra bracing. My mounting pics:

Thanks, runsilent.
Those are great pics. So you are saying the Suzuki factory rack is a little flimsy?
I was leaning that way because of the price compared to $114.00+ for the SW-Motech.
Thanks for the info on the windscreen, too. I will be looking to add that as well since I am planning some longer days on the bike this summer and fall.
Keep 'em coming. These are very helpful.

Yes, the Suzuki rack mounts only to the crossmember that holds the grab handle and after a couple weeks the Givi case began to bounce more and more. The crossmember was cracking and I added the bracing. It hasn't moved a bit in over 30k miles since and has held up great, always totally waterproof in the heaviest of rain, sitting or at speed.
The Monolock cases come with a mounting plate that clamps right on tubular racks like the Suzi factory rack:

I made my own rack for a previous GS500E that bolted to the grab handle and survived tens of thousands of miles but only carried soft luggage. Could be removed by unbolting the grab handle. Once I was following a friend whose rather heavy Nat Cycle quick release hard saddlebag fell of his Valk on the freeway. I picked it up and hauled it home bungied to this homemade rack: :thumb:

OK, OK - no inline pictures. ;) But if
MinnGS hasn't already seen my
Riderhaus (http://www.bbburma.net/Riderhaus.htm) page or my
Trips (http://www.bbburma.net/) pages, (s)he's entitled to
look, right? :icon_mrgreen:
Unfortunately, I know that luggage racks for the '01+ models are different than for the pre-'01 models. At least, the
Five*Stars racks are....

Can you even get the Five Stars rack anymore? TwistedThrottle.com/Riderhaus lists it as discontinued.
Rats! Well, I guess I needn't talk up the Five*Stars stuff anymore....
That is why I was mentioning customizing the K-rack mount for a Bandit in the other thread. TwistedThrottle does have the Krauser rack but I don't like the cases as well as I do the Givi.
They still have the 89+ givi top racks... I'm supposed to be getting one in the mail eventually... Twisted throttle's shipping sucks
However - if you want upgraded brake lines, go with HEL performance, their shipping, product, and customer service are all excellent! :thumb:
Queso. Have you had luck with SW-Motech? Has anyone given them a try?
The engine guards posted on the Riderhaus link are great!
Question: Anyone have racks/hard luggage they want to unload? I have a 2002 GS500. You can PM me if you have something you think I could use.

I have SW-Motech case guards. Very high quality. Got to me in a little over a week. Very high quality product, easy installation with some forethought.
Even though Twisted Throttle's website has it listed as discontinued, if you call them they have a company that can fit Krauser luggage for the GS. I was really stoked untill I found out the prices. to rig the bike with hard top and side baggs would be $1000 :o once shippings included. But they do have them despite what their website says. good luck
