Title: Ben Roethlisburger hurt in MC crash
Post by: LPC2104 on June 12, 2006, 10:02:29 AM
I live in PA so this stuff travels really fast.  Apparently, a car turn left in front of him and he hit it, hit the windshield with his head, then hit the ground.  I don't believe he was wearing a helmet and in trauma care so I've heard.  Bad news, and wear the lid people.

I have no pity for him.  He has gone on and on about how he won't wear a helmet.  I am fine with that as long as he forfeits any rights to complain or sue about injuries.  Just plain stupid, especially for a professional athlete who plays a full contact sport.  Dumb...  How much money did the Browns player lose for being an equally stupid dumb ass?

I've now heard it's not life threatening and he got smacked on the head twice, bleeding all over and missing a ton of teeth.  Really disoriented and the witness that was helping him didn't recognize who it was he was so covered in blood.

Yeah, helmets dont do anything.

As long as Manning continues to step on his meat in big games, the Colts don't have a chance.

They just said on the radio that Big Ben is in surgery.  Hope he is okay.  We don't need any more heat on the motorcycling community.

Not wearing a helmet is dumb.

From PennLive:

Roethlisberger's 2005 Suzuki Hayabusa, which is named after a Japanese bird of prey, was totaled. The front wheel was broken in half. The handle bars were broken. The left pedal was shattered. The 170-horsepower bike, which weighs 500 pounds fully loaded, was targeted by law enforcement agencies worldwide after its 1998 debut because it could reach a top speed of 189 mph.

Suzuki Motorcycles of North America gave Roethlisberger the bike as part of a promotional deal in exchange for him appearing at several Suzuki dealerships in the area, including Andrews Cycle in Salem, Ohio where he picked up the motorcycle last summer. Andrews' sales staff declined comment.

The motorcycle is popular among first-time buyers, said Steve Stiller, a salesman at Northgate Motorcycles in Cranberry, Butler County.

My favorite is the last sentence.

Nope.  The entire article is cut and posted on PSU's rivals network.  He didn't link it, and I copied a part of his so I don't have a link.

I just re-read the thread I found it and some guy that has a harley is telling student that helmets are pretty much worthless and that starting out on a 800cc bike isn't too bad.  I don't know how these guys think this, especially after what happened to Big Ben.  It gets my blood boiling.

An idiot.

Luckily he is ok, but screw him for all the bad press this is gonna get. I just hope this gets spun into a "not wearing helmets is for morons" story.

Edit: ESPN just re-aired an interview they did with him last year. More than a few times he said he wasn't at as much risk because he didn't ride a sportbike. Heh, I wonder what he calls the Busa?

ESPN had that story about NFL and one NBA player getting hurt riding in the off season from last year.  It was referenced above.
They showed footage of Kellen Winslow Jr. on his new Gixxer, 5 days after getting a permit.  He was captured by a security camera doing stoppies and wheelies in a parking lot.  Then zoom. . . off into an island on the parking lot and the tree growing therefrom.
Squid.

I'm starting to get really annoyed with all the "motorcycles are so dangerous" stuff.  Sure they're dangerous but not nearly as dangerous as the idiots who ride them and do dumb stuff like this.
Title: Re: Ben Roethlisburger hurt in MC crash

From a MC rider's point of view this shows 1) why you should wear your helmet and 2) people who don't ride should pay more attention to motorcycles

to everyone else in the world, it will only show motorcycles are obviously way to dangerous and it is their duty to save us misguided souls who feel a need to play russian roulette with our lives

On a side note... In Europe they have public information commercials about watching out for motorcycles, but why not here in the US?  Are we too concerned with spending our tax dollars for commercials about telling your kids marijuana is BAD and how cigarettes cause cancer to actually do something that will make a difference?

What I read was that he was on his new 2005 Gixxer 750 LEARNING HOW TO RIDE (awesome...) and pulled a classic noob mistake and grabbed the throttle rather than the brake. Hello curb, nice to meet ya!  As opposed to Roethliswhatever, he was wearing a helmet. As opposed to smart people, it was not strapped on. Smart shaZam!, dude.

that would be awesome. I'd buy one.

I'd be curious to know if he had to sign something in his contract about not participating in dangerous activities (of which motorcycle riding is usually specifically mentioned). I know it was an issue with Windslow.

From an article by ESPN's Darren Rovell;

"Roethlisberger's contract doesn't specifically forbid him from riding motorcycles. Most don't. However, agents say his accident might encourage teams to put specific language about motorcycle use in more contracts to protect their pricey investments."

Hard to believe the language wasn't already in them, but I'm sure it will be in them from now on.

Although there was nothing specific to riding motorcycles, there are clauses in every contract that forbid players taking risks like these outside of the sport and they all come with major penalties. Make no doubt about it. Roethlisburger will be losing a fair chunk on money on this little act of stupidity, not just from his salary, but endorsements too.

I'd also like a shirt. :thumb:

Why?  I don't see this as any different than a number of stupid, bone-head moves that could have got him hurt.  If he can't play, he forfits his contract and has to give his signing bonus back.  Same result as if he were hurt on a skateboard.

I'm not trying to defend the guy at all, i just hate to see this result in more mumbo-jumbo contractual anti-motorcycle crap.  There is a coal company that my company does business with, they have taken a hard anti-motorcycle stance... you can't ride them, you can't own one, you can't buy one, or you're fired.  I don't get it, you work in an undergound coal mine thats about as dangerous as you can get, and the owner says you can't ride. :cookoo:

This brought up a good point that the media hasn't caught onto yet.  Thanks to my recent MSP class, I know it actually was illegal for Ben to be riding without a helmet.  You know the interview they keep showing him saying, "It's optional to wear a helmet in PA".  Well, it's only optional for people over 21 that have had their license for 2 years, or people over 21 that have completed the MSP course.  He has done neither.  For all his preaching, he was wrong the entire time.  He was never allowed to ride without a helmet.

Stephen, you are right.  But while YOU may not see it as any different than many other activities, try telling that to Johnny Q Public after the Winslow/BigBen incidents.  I'm not suggesting that motorcycling is riskier than many other activities, but it is perceived to be that way by many... including owners who shell out millions for marquis players.... and their lawyers/accountants.... hence the languge will almost certainly go in.

Good point, LPC. . .

"There is too much tension in the LPC.  It's kind of hard bein' Jake D-O-double D. . . "

Werd.

My only hope is that Big Ben pulls thought okay and continues to ride, taking a very public stance on wearing proper gear.  I'd love to see a PSA with Ben talking about wearing a helmet and encouraging drivers to watch out for us.  That is the only good that could come from this.   But I doubt very much that will happen.

Circulating on some lists I'm on:

Send Ben your old helmets.

We can mail them to:

Pittsburgh Steelers
Attn: Ben Roethlisberger
3400 South Water Street
Pittsburgh, PA 15203

Spread the word around the internet. If enough of us do this, it might
merit a news item that could help counter the negative image of motorcycling
that Ben helped further. Include a note: "Ben, I always wear one of these before I take the
field".
