Title: Self induced carb problem (after rejet... rich at idle?)
Post by: manofthefield on June 12, 2006, 07:33:49 PM
This is why if isn't broke, I usually don't fix it,  but there wasn't enough broke on my bike, so I rejetted

I think I have some idea of whats wrong, but I don't have the time right now to go futz with it.

I just rejetted to 40 pilots, 125 mains, 1 washer under the needles, and 3 turns out on my otherwise stock bike.  The carbs were pretty clean and in good shape.

I went for a test ride and the bike runs good at higher rpms, but when idling it bogs if I give it gas, unless I am very delacate with the throttle.  So I think my idle settings are rich(though I could be wrong)

The one thing that I noticed that was funny while I was putting things together was that the #4 washers I used had a wider O.D. than the plastic "doughnuts" on the needle and when I dropped the needles in, I don't think the washers would fit all the way down to where the "doughnuts" would normally sit.  So are my needles sitting up way to high, causing me to be rich?

It's entirely possible.  Egeaus clued me into the fact that #4 refers only to the size of the hole in the washer; not the O.D. or the thickness.  If the washer is too wide and is preventing the needle from fully seating you would have the kind of problems you're describing.

Your float height is likely too low (ie. too much fuel in float bowls) especially if it only happens at low speed/low throttle positions.  Check your float height before doing anything else.

i doubt very much its your floats, but it could be. id' say you would be right in guessing its your washers, but before you do that, wind in your mixture screw 1/4 turn  and try that, i had problems down low after a rejet and it turned out just to be the mixture was to rich

When I put 40 pilots in mine it ran like shaZam! down low. I went back to the stock pilots and turned the mixture screw out a bit more.

3 weeks later...

I had some time to put some 3mm washers in instead of the #4 washers and they work much better.  They actually seat down where they should and the bike runs more or less how it should now.

I had one little hesitation and 'pop' once when accelerating from a start, but that should just be a fine tuning issue... at least the bike is rideable now.  I just feel bad for letting her sit for so long
