I lost all of my keys and I can't fiqure how to take off my ignition in order to get the key code so I can get a key made. My dealer says that getting that code is the only way. What can I do? How do I get that dang Ignition module off?
The ignition is held on by two torx-head bolts that are designed to break off at a certain torque. According to Clymer (which is wrong about a lot of things) you can get it off with a center punch. You basically punch near the edge of the bolt, and once there's an indentation, you have to punch it at an angle to unscrew it. This method doesn't sound very easy.
On my gixxer the switch went bad... I ended up taking the top of the tripple off and taking it to the dealer where they removed the switch for free (I asked nicely)... Then I just bought an emglo switch for $60 and spent another $45 on having the tank and seatlatch keyed to the new ignition. Big hassle but spent less than the dealers price for a switch...
Actually, that is not the only way. I am a locksmith, and I have made the key from the tank lock before. The tank lock holds most of the cuts in the key, and the ignition can be determined from there. Really though, only a locksmith can make that happen, it generally costs a bunch.
If you want to save some money, pull the top triple, flip it over, drill out the shear bolts that hold the ignition on, unplug and remove. The code may be on the lock, but it may very well not. Reguardless, a locksmith can disassemble the ignition, and make a working key. It will cost less if you take the lock to them, and as long as your bike used one key before, this key will also work the tank and seat lock.
i didn't think there were codes on bikes after the mid 80's
best bet is to take the top tripple off...easy
and take to a locksmith....locally they do it for about....35-50 bucks
in 15-30 minutes
There are key codes ...
I did some for my 85 maxim.
Worked like a charm, however your code may be hidden so well ... you may have to drill out the headless bolts and that is when it may be visible.
Once the code is visible, $5 and you've got a perfect key ... right at the stealer ... one rare occassion he is not a stealer ... O0 ...
You could cut it with the tank and that will leave you with 1 wafer to guess ... the top most, AKA ... easiest of the bunch ...
Cool.
