Title: OK, central PA... lets do this.
Post by: vtlion on June 13, 2006, 07:51:27 AM
This weekend.  Saturday morning I want to ride.  I don't particularly care where... just a couple of hours of twisties.  Maybe out 144 to Renovo if the conditions are right (anybody know).  If not that, then 26 to huntingdon perhaps.  Early afternoon we can head back to State College and cookout at Spring Creek Park with some of my lab-rat buddies.

Any takers?

Destinations?

I'd love to, but I definitely don't have time or cash for camping.  If I can manage a multi-day road trip at all, it will be Skyline and the BRP in VA.  If I find myself with the time to do it, I might scoot out to the rally just to say 'hi' and head back.

Anyway, I'm talking about this coming weekend.  Summer is here and I need to meet some riders who would be good for a short scoot around the area now and then, as this is usually all the time I have.

The more I think about it the more I think I might be able to do it.  What time are you planning on heading out?

Speaking of central PA riders.  I already asked VTlion if he was the rider on the older blue GS500E that I've seen in state college a couple times.  He isn't.  Are you here mr older blue E?

So anyway, I rode to work this morning and I passed an older silverish GS500E.  Didn't get a great look but I know it was a GS500E.

Are you guys here or lurking?  It'd be nice to get a little ride together.

LPC.

Was thinking about doing a morning sortie.  I want to get out before the temps and the sun get too high.

We can meet at the Barnes and Noble on Benner Pike if that is convenient for you.  You've got my number, give me a buzz.

Crap.  Too many things went wrong today.  I'll be locked up tomorrow.  I don't have much going on after tuesday of next week so anytime after then I should be good.  Sorry to get your hopes next.  I'll give you a shout if I go out before then (tuesday).  Ride safe.

How about something tied into Arts Fest?  It starts in a few weeks.  Might make it worth rolling down from an hour or two out.    :thumb:

One more try... then I give up.

July 15 or 16.  It is the weekend of Arts Fest and it also just happens to the conclusion of my 31st lap around the sun.  So anybody interested in a scoot?  Afterward I will man the grill if anybody wants to chip in for some burgers/dogs/steaks, etc.

Late morning run up to Renovo on Saturday, then back to State College for some burgers or something.  We can cook at my place, head down to spring-creek park and barbecue or head over to ArtsFest for some overpriced chicken-on-a-stick and funnel cakes.

Renovo sounds good.  Count me in.

Anyone else in central PA want to make the trip???

Paul "pdg108" looks like he might be in on it.  I'm trying to find some other locals, but many of them aren't in town over the summer.

Did I mention that my latest batch of homebrew should be ready to drink by then?  ;)

Yep, I'm in.  Homebrew and burgers sounds awsome to me, but I'm pretty easy to please.  Of course there also something to be said about over priced funnel cakes.  :)

I've talked to some people at work and I think 2 want to go.  Both harley riders so mentally prepare yourselves for the no helmet no gear stuff.  Another guy is thinking about it and he's my friend with the ninja500.

What kinda of beer did you make?  I can probably get some irish red and english ale from my last batches that I've bottled.  I got a kegerator and changed the tower to support two corny kegs so I mainly keg now.  I'm making some raspberry wheat, english ale, and another batch of IR to be ready for my friends wedding late august.

pdg, I suppose I could go Sunday, but I would rather do it Saturday.  I would definitely take either day if the weather is looking much better.

LPC, Any respectable rider is welcome.  Your gear is your own business.  Just be warned, I'm done dealing with idiots who pass on corners, stunt on streets, harass other motorists, weave in traffic, generally draw bad attention to the group etc.  I want us all to have an enjoyable ride and get back in one piece.

LPC, I made a steam-style ale.  Pretty standard stuff, just grabbed some light malt and crystal20 off the shelf at the brewstore.  Threw in home hallertau and a pack of ale yeast.  It is a really uncreative batch, but I've never tasted a bad batch of homebrew.  If want to bring some brew over to my place when we meet up I can toss it in the fridge to chill it down while we are riding.

I guess no wheelies for me then.   ;)

On a serious note, I've never rode with the 2 harley people but they are a husband and wife duo and I'd be shocked if they rode like idiots.  The guy on the ninja is as careful as I am and that's saying a lot.  If the 2 guys from Billtown come up I'd personally like a quick review as to how to ride in a group as I've never done it before and I'm not crazy at the thought of people staggering too close to me in a corner.  I'm a rookie and my braking/line taking will prove it.  I like some space in the corners, but we can cross that bridge when we get there.

Either day should work for me.

It's no biggie.  i've just had a few bad experiences going out with some of the younger riders from the college.  As for group riding, it is very simple and common-sensical.  Ride within your limits, don't tailgait, and enjoy.  You don't have to be the fastest in the group... that's what waiting is for.

looking forward to FINALLY getting a group going around here!!!

I'd say if more people can go sat and/or the weather is nicer sat I totally understand you going then and I'll catch u guys the next time around. If you do decide on sunday count me in, but dont change the date just for me if you'd rather go Sat.

I havent been to state college yet since i moved to williamsport last year, so I hope to check it out sometime this summer.

If I do make it, theres also the 50/50 chance of me riding two up. My fiance Jen might want to go along. But you dont have to worry about me stunting either way lol.

Lets let the weather decide.

I propose the following:  Lets say by Thursday afternoon, when the weather forecast has at least a snowball's chance in hell of being somewhat accurate, we set a day.  I have no objections to making it Sunday.  My main constraint is that I'd like to make it a late morning ride to keep the sun/heat/storm risk to a minimum.

Sounds like a good call.  Being that this weekend was fairly nice both days, what are the odds of us getting two full weekends in a row?  ;)

right now it is looking like a typical mid-atlantic summer forecast... 30% chance of afternoon T-storms as far ahead as they care to forecast.  I'd be willing to bet that either day will be fine so long as we get started by 10am or so.  We would be back to State College by 2pm, right about the time that the afternoon storm threat starts to build up.

I'm in for either day.  My friend with the ninja is out as he reservations for camping.  I don't know if the harley couple is in or out.  I think she's scared of riding with guys from the internet.  You bunch of weirdos.   ;)

I'm assuming that VT and PDG are in for sure and barg is in if it's on a sunday.

Can't wait, it's going to be fun.

Yep, internet people are weird.  :)  You guys might kid nap me and make me ride all day and eat over priced funnel cakes.

yep, I'm in, barring and any unforseen circumstances.  Last time I tried to meet up with VT I hit a piece of concrete on I-80 and bent BOTH my rims on the way to meet him.  That sucked.  I was more ticked that I couldn't ride, than that the bike was out of commission.   I'll be avoiding that section of 80 this time. :)
Title: Re: OK, central PA... lets do this.
Post by: vtlion on July 11, 2006, 03:56:38 AM
I'm looking forward to it.  This will be my first group ride in about a year.

Paul, don't you DARE bend the rims on that beautiful machine.  I'm really eager to get an up close look at her this weekend.

Sor far the weather looks like its nearly a toss up.  Sunny skies Saturday and isolated T-storms on Sunday.  Lets give it a couple more days and then we can firm up the day/time.

LPC, I think your friends need to relax and come ride with us!  If they don't like the ride, they can always turn around, It's not like she's going to be sitting on the back of one of our bikes  :icon_razz:

The forecast is looking good.  we should be able to settle on a day soon.  I was thinking we should shoot for a start around 10 am.  (Paul/Bargo, could you guys make it to town that early?)  Both days look great, and an early start will ensure us of a few things...

1. We will beat the weekend afternoon slow-pokes out onto the road

2. We should escape the afternoon heat and any chance of T-storms

3. There will be time afterward to blow by ArtsFest, throw some steaks on the grill, knock back a few cold ones (or in my case more than a few cold ones since I'll already be home for the day  ;) ) and still have time to rest up before everybody has to head home.

im game for going early if u guys decide on sunday. I been trying to talk my fiance out of going to ride the rails to trails bike ride on sat by telling her there might be a bunch of rattlers out there, but shes not scared. So it still looks like im only open for sunday.  Ill watch to see what day u guys decide on. both days look hot, but sat the less wet right now.

OK gang... time to pick a day for the ride.

Forecast looks about the same for both days.  Saturady is "isolated Tstorms" in it, but those tend to be an afternoon phenomenon around here, so I think we are clear either day.

comments?

Paul and Bargo,

How is Sunday looking for all?

If its a good day for everybody, then I'm game for sunday.  That just means I need to spend my saturday doing errands around the house (in-laws are coming next week.. gotta get her ship-shape).  So you can all give the place a mock inspection when you get here  :thumb:

Everybody sound off on Sunday at 10 am... my place (directions to follow in a pm).

well gang,

from Bargovic's availability to the forecast to my big arse honey-do list for the weekend... all signs point to Sunday.

Lets plan on that.  Sunday we will meet at my place at 10am and roll shortly after.  ArtsFest will be packing up by Sunday afternoon, so I dont know if it would be worth stopping by or not.  We can definitely throw some cow on the grill at my place though (if anyone cares to hang out after the ride).

cheers.

Sunday, sweet, sounds like a plan to me.  Got the directions should be a no brainer. (famous last words) :)

Bargovic, looks like about a 1:25 ride if we take 80 most of the way.  How about we meet around 8:15 at the gas station (Sunoco?) there at the intersection of 15 and 54.

Looks like it will be a good day, never put this many miles all in one day on the 675 should help the bike break me in. :)

I got a wacky idea....

what say we meet up in Lock Haven somewhere.

We could ride 120 up to Renovo, then back down 144 to Bellefonte/State college.

The ride out to the twisties from state college isn't all that exciting.  If Paul and Bargovic are planning on coming back to my place afterward, meeting in LockHaven would save them both some highway-eating to get back out of Happy Valley.

So I'm thinking something like this...

-LPC and I meet Paul and Bargovic in Lock Haven around 10 or 11am.
-We all ride north to Renovo on 120 (a good warmup road, not too technical)
-Pit stop in Renovo, then 144 south (twisty heaven) back to State College for another pit at my place.

Or the original plan with meeting at my place and essentially doing the loop in reverse is cool too.

thoughts?

VT, That sounds like a great  :thumb: idea to me. Have you ever tried 44 north just a little bit up the road from Lock Haven, there are parts that rival 144.
Also, I have been thinking about trying 664 North out of Lock Haven, it looks awsome on the map, but I have yet to see what it is like.  Both of these roads wind up at the same place, and then you can cut across a back road and come into Hyner View from the other side.  We could stop up there for some nice views and then head back down 144 to State College.

I'm up for some burgers and a brew at your your place.  Sounds like I'll be about ready for a rest at that point.  Easily worth chipping in a few bucks.

I'm not entirely familiar with Lock Haven, not sure where we could meet that would be obvoius, ideas?

That route from lock haven sounds good to me. 144 looks awesome. I'm up for taking 144 to state college for some grilling as well.  Paul do you still want to meet up before lock haven? I wasnt sure if you would take 80 out there, because i'd probably take 220. Both 10 or 11 am work for me, I have to admit im getting up at 6:30 sat and riding my mnt bike 26 miles, so 10 looked really early, but if we are meeting in lock haven 10am isnt that bad at all now.  Plus, sunday is going to be scorching hot so the earlier, the cooler our ride will be.  I wonder how well a camelback works on a motorcycle lol.

OK, the meet-in-Lock Haven plan sounds like a go.  so here's the plan...
LPC and I are gonna jump off of I-80 near Rt 120.  I have been looking for a good gas station/ restaurant near the exchange  to use as a  meeting point, but havent' found a good one yet.... lets just pass out mobile #'s by PM and say that we will connect near the I80-Rt120 interchange at about 10am on sunday cool?

I'm guessing you mean 220-Rt120 interchange, since 120 doesn't go down to 80. Right?

Bargovic, how about we meet at Dairy Queen in South Williamsport at 9:30? 220 is quicker  for me to Lock Haven.

gar... yah... that's what I meant.

seems like there are a few blocks along 120 that should be easy enough to find each other on.  I think I have ridden that way once a few years ago, but I certainly am no expert on the area.  I think we could manage a meeting there if we swapped cell phone  numbers.

excellent! see you guys in the morning.

I guess LCP and I are just going to ride up to the 220/120 interchange and then find a good place to stop and get in contact by cell phone if we don't see you right away.

Ha!   I missed the snake, to busy trying not to miss another turn.  :icon_rolleyes:

Took me a while to get back, should have just taken 220, might have been quicker to go up through Billtown.  I forgot there is construction on 80 between here and there.  So I had the choice, sit in traffic for a hour sweating to death and over heating the bike, or take the back roads the whole way.  So I took the back way.  Didn't get back untill 6:00.  I am so glad I left the A/C cranked.  :)

A few pics from today's ride.  We finished up with some burgers and a homebrew at my place.  Overall the ride was excellent.  Some of the highlights included the awesome view at Renovo, the killer snake in the middle of the road, comparing butterfly/junebug impacts after the ride, and passing rolling thunder on the access road to the scenic view.

Gotta be sure that tire pressure is right before heading out  :thumb:

LPC, use the ignition much?

Four sweet rides... GS500F (bargovic), GS500E (LPC2104), SV65S (VTlion) and Daytona675 (pdg).

Excellent overlook of Renovo that I never knew existed until today.  Thanks Paul!

L to R... VTlion (Ron), pdg108 (Paul), LPC (Alan.. did I spell that right?) and Bargovic (Nick)

Man, we had a GREAT ride!  Lets do it again (minus the killer attack-snake in the middle of the road).
