Title: How Sunblock Can Kill You (a motorcycle rider)
Post by: Phaedrus on June 17, 2006, 03:49:44 PM
I found an interesting read about sunblock, and since it is summer, I figured I'd share it:

The short of it: "If you use sunblock on your face be sure to wipe it off before putting your helmet on!"

Something to think about  :thumb:

The same thing can happen with plain ol' sweat :o:

Quote from this 15 May 2004 post (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=8916.msg74112#msg74112), which describes a couple of my earliest riding experiences:

I was riding along on this pretty hot day, into the sun, and all of a sudden I felt a stinging/burning sensation in one of my eyes.  I kept blinking and tearing up, and wondering if I should stop on the side of the freeway, and not wanting to seem like a 37-year-old sissy.  [My Dad was riding behind me.]  I went along like that for several miles, until my OTHER eye started stinging, too.  I finally pulled over, almost blinded, and wiped the SWEAT out of my eyes.  I also vowed that I would never be that stupid again.[/list]

It's good to use sunscreen when out riding.  Just keep it off the area above the eyes.  After all, you don't want the sun to permanently bake-on that scrunched-up look that a full-faced helmet imposes on your face.  :icon_rolleyes:

I read through most of his articles, and he does have a good number of useful tips. He is also awful at explaining things, and is writing to an audience of cruiser/ tourer riders who I think have totally different motivations from my own. His advice is very safe, but I think that it is overly so. He is arrogant about his own safety techniques and is condescending even when explaining complicated physics behind things like counter steering. In short, I'm sure if you follow all his advice you will be a thoroughly safe and thoroughly boring rider (and also elitist).
