Title: Radar stealth?
Post by: Will McClard on June 17, 2006, 05:17:52 PM
How well does a gs show up on cops radar?
I got stopped the other day and she told be she only got me at 50mph but new I was doing better than 70. By the time she got a good reading I was down to 50. It was a 35 zone but she let she let me go. I knew her when she was in high school. Good to live in a small town.

A few years ago, there was one of those trailers with the radar setup, un-manned, near where I live.  I went by it at 35MPH, the lights started blinking 35, I looked around for the cops, there were none (sometimes they sit where they can see the display and nab people that way), looked real close at the trailer for a camera, saw none, went back down the road and came past at 135 mph on my old CBR1000F.   The thing never picked up the bike, and there was a good 1/2 mile of unobstructed road approaching the trailer.  I don't know why it would pick up 35, but not 135.

I like that.
They have them in my town alot. I will see what I can do.
135 must have figured it was an error.

135 might have simply been too fast for the software to want to display. Did the display board even have 3 digits? Theres one of those speed checkers near my house in a 25 mph zone, but I've noticed that it turns off once you accelerate to more than 50. Maybe they don't want people to view it as a challenge (I certainly do)?

I know a spot on I5 where it tells you your speed, if your going faster than 70 then it just says "your speed is more than 70MPH"  everthing under that and it will tell you what your speed is.  Gotta remember radar is so fishy anyway.

I have heard that bike has two spot to reflect radar. One is head lamp and other is helmet visor. So if you see a cop "shooting" at you just strafe to side a little and start braking. Ofc this is something i have heard. Not that i am practicing this maneuver  :icon_rolleyes:.

Damn, here we have radars at intersections and at random places in the city... problem with them is that you don't know how fast you were going until you get a letter in the mail with a suprisingly clear picture of your license plate and a hefty fine attached to it  don't ask how I know.

66Km/h in a 50 zone... $135 (for you guys south of the border... that's about 9MPH over)

(Obviously) motorcycles present a much smaller profile for radar to get you.... but this isn't ncessarily as helpful as you think.  If you're riding on the road in traffic, then beign carefull about where you are (vs spots cops with radar might be in) will make you indistinguishable from  a car, since they are sooooo much bigger.  If you are the only vehichle on the road, then I would be careful.

The radar cross section of a motorcycle is smaller than a car if for no other reason, it's much smaller than a car.  Radar units are automatically less sensitive to them.  However, they can still be picked up, just not as far away.
