Title: GS luggage - Where'd you get yours?
Post by: Queso on June 19, 2006, 11:32:50 AM
And if you don't mind sharing, how much? I'm looking for a luggage setup, a big top case, and possibly (if kind of narrow - don't want a wide bike) side cases. twistedthrottle.com let me down on the givi rack and case, so does anyone know of some other sturdy racks for the GS?

Anyone from LA know of a store in the area that has bike luggage? For the top case, I want a hard case big enough for a full face helmet that can lock (as well as lock to the bike). For side cases, I probably couldn't afford hard ones, but I'd rather have soft side cases than a tank bag.

Any ideas?

How did Twisted Throttle let you down?  They still show Givi topcase racks for GS500.  Seems their SW Motec rack is only for later model GS500 with newer bodywork, 2001 and on.  They have the Givi cases.  I think the Givi rack requires another mounting plate to mount the less expensive Monolock cases, it's made for the more expensive Monokey cases.

I bought a Givi E33 case from Arizona Motorsports now ridenow.com for about $100 that includes a mounting base that clamps to tubular racks.  I clamped it to the Sizuki rack that is about $80 at RonAyers.  It's a really rugged rack but the frame cross member it mounts to is not rugged!  Needs to be braced to hold a topcase.  Solid as a rock with bracing.

Twisted throttle claimed to have everything in stock, but after a month of waiting and finding out it still hadn't shipped, I got some information... They don't have any of the GS500 racks left, and it ticked me off how hard it was to get them to tell me this. I need luggage ASAP, so I was quite irritated with them...

Also - checked out that auction - the case is a bit smaller than I was looking for... But I still e-mailed the seller to ask about fitment. I could probably rig something up for side bags myself if I got that... Thanks!

I got good service from Arizona Motosports on my E33 case.  I ordered it from them and it was shipped direct from Givi.  Recently my case was dropped and I broke the red lens in the back of the case.  Also ordered it from Arizona and it was shipped direct from Givi.  Maybe they can send you a rack the same way if that e-bay deal doesn't work out.  Be worth a call to them if your interested.  They list the Givi racks for the various GS models.

Thanks for the input on Twisted Throttle service.

I could not find the Suzuki rack listed with RonAyers, that runsilent talked about.
I would like to get the rack pictured http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v443/jcp8832/99950-70267.jpg for my 01, but haven't been able to locate one.
I wonder if they are back ordered, or out of production.

99950-70267 is the part number, just enter it in the box to the left for part numbers and it comes up at RonAyers.

That ebay listing won't fit a 2000 model  Givi is just too expensive... I might just make something myself... Maybe I can find a shop that'll weld something on for me.

I made this rack from aluminum angle and put it together with stainless screws and nuts.  Mounts to the grab handle only and has held up for years.  It's taken quite a load a couple times and with the addition of a couple support struts at the back I'd put a Givi or other hard case on it.

Have you seen these $60 and up cases from JC Whitney?  Saw one on a Rebel once with a homemade rack and it didn't look bad.  Was functional.  A couple of them look like Givi knockoffs.

Not trying to convince you against a top case (I want to get one myself when I can afford it), but why not a tankbag? Even with a top case I'd probably still use a tank bag. They're super convenient. You can stash a spare shield, gloves, water bottle, energy bar, cell phone, wallet or whatever you need and have them easy to get to.

I've been happy thus far with the Cortech bags:

http://www.tourmaster.com/xcart/product.php?productid=146&cat=43

I got them at the local dealer, and they were marked down to $125.  Roomy and easy to put on/take off/carry around.  Phoslite striping to help you stick out at night.  Look good, not too bulky.  You can attach their tailbag, too, if you're not carrying a passenger.

Well... I did it... I ordered a rack and an E52. I saw the E52 in person at a scooter shop. It's a beast, alright, but I don't think it will look too ridiculous on my GS. It's so BIG. And EXPENSIVE. $488.43 for case & rack...  :o But it'll be worth it. The case comes off with a key and has a nice built in handle, so I can use it as regular carry on luggage when I travel. This will be super handy. I got one in flat black with the built in extra stoplight. I should have it next Friday, so I'll take pics when I've got it on.

I'll finally be able to go shopping with my bike! No more sizing up groceries for my back pack  :icon_mrgreen:

I FINALLY got it!! I got it all installed today, complete with auxilary brake lights! It doesn't look as gaudy as I was afraid it might, so that is nice... I'll get some pics up soon. Now I can go shopping for more than a backpack full of groceries!! WOO HOO!!!

I picked up http://www.chaseharper.com/TailTrunks/4400.htm that guy this weekend for 30 bucks from the local bike shop and so far love it.   It's big enough I could probly throw a couple days of cloths in there and still have room for a couple bottles of water.

Hmm... I got a pretty nice tank bag on sale from cycle gear for 25 bucks. Quite spacious and it's got a spot for putting maps in, too (extremely handy). Motoboss is the brand, I believe. I'm still workin on those pics...

I really like magnetic. Really easy to take on and off. I haven't scratched my tank, but it is something to watch out for with both types. Just check the bottom to make sure it nothing is stuck to it before putting it on and you'll be fine.

I started off with this Frank Thomas model. It's a little more expensive than the Motoboss model, but I liked it better. Good value for the money.

I had to replace it recently and went with this Tourmaster model (damn cats). More expensive, but nicer. I really like it.

Here's my deal.  I'm looking for hard luggage that locks.  I want to be able to leave things in the luggage on the bike while Im at work, or in the store, etc and have it be safe.  I've been looking at the Krauser sidecases but they appear to stick out really far.....I'm torn on what to do....
