Title: I DID IT, I DID IT, I DID IT!!!!!! i changed my fork seals!!
Post by: Chris2P on June 20, 2006, 06:38:54 PM
You have no idea how intimidated I was to do this.  I would have bet a 100 bucks that I would screw it up!  But following the instructions from this site and making the kerry tool and having the 1 1/2" pcv pipe for setting the seal, it was a breeze!!!

Again, thankee, thankee, thankee, for everyone who contributes to this great website!  I definitley wouldnt have an idea what to do if i followed the repair manual!

Congratulations all 'round! :thumb:

Now ... if we pre-'01 owners could just get scratch to find, buy, and distribute those Triumph fork guards (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=3284.msg76468#msg76468) so we could keep our poor forks clean....  :icon_mrgreen:

(scratch, do you know of an online source for Triumph parts?)

They are standard on '01+ bikes (or at least the '04), why not just get those? They are $11.47 a piece on MrCycles.com and can probably find them cheaper at some other online store.

Couldn't find one...guess I'll hafta start taking orders, and order them in bulk from Cal BMW/Triumph...and then send them out individually...good thing I work in shipping...also, there is a shorter version available, but it is wider than the '01+ fork guards.  They are more expensive @ $20+ not including shipping.

I remember looking into that a couple years ago, but there was some reason why it seemed like it wouldn't work.

Hmmm....  comparing the MrCycles 2000 diagram (http://images.powersportsnetwork.com/fiche/images/Suzuki/1997/Motorcycles/2104_43.gif) against the MrCycles 2001 diagram (http://images.powersportsnetwork.com/fiche/images/Suzuki/2001/Motorcycles/2102_45.gif), I can't see much of a difference in the dust seal (Item 7).  I assume that's where it mounts?

scratch's old post (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=3284.msg76468#msg76468) makes it sound like the Triumph part just "snaps" on.  Can the Suzuki part be installed without taking the whole front end off the bike?

Nope.

The Triumph guard is split at the back, so you can spread that apart to get it around the fork tube, and then lower it over the top of the fork leg, put the bolt through and tighten it up.

I'll take another picture (especially, since I now have a digital camera! yay), right now.  BRB.

Nope.

Bingo. They slide over the forks and then right onto the lower part of the fork (the "female" part) under the dust seal. It could be a cheaper and easier solution to it though, as they are probably more readily availible.

I guess the other thing was that the taller of the two Triumph parts seemed taller than the Suzuki part.  And you know me - I'm more into function than form....  :)

The nuts are loose, but fit into those recesses; the bolt then draws them in.

Kerry - Yes, this set that I have is twice as tall, that's why I bought them.  The short Triumph version is the same height as the '01+ guards, only wider.

cool. I did mine yesterday along with cleaning up all the plastics and bumper black painting them. Good stuff.

Being at home for the summer kinda blows.... more time to work on stuff... but the 56k is killing me.

I went ahead and filled out a Parts Request Form on their website.  They will supposedly "contact me soon".

Thanks again!
