Title: Is anyone in the graphic arts business?
Post by: annguyen1981 on June 22, 2006, 08:59:18 PM
I'm looking to get some vinyl images cut.  I'm using AutoCAD / Illustrator / and possibly CorelDraw 12 if I can remember how to use it.

what are you asking someone to do exactly-convert what you have to a format that will work for a sign company (who cuts vinyl)?

I'm actually looking for someone on this forum that HAS the equipment...  And btw...

Jpg images cannot be used to cut vinyl...  In order to cut vinyl, your file MUST be in vector format.  Jpg images can be PRINTED on vinyl, tho....  But that gets more expensive

Illustrator should do everything you need... The newer version CS is great, I use it all the time.  I work in graphics and pre-press, but outsource all printing.  I've got a good shop just down the road that does vinyl and signs, does great work.  I've seen him do everything from billboards to cop car graphics and motorcycles.  These small sign businesses seem to be popping up all over, it shouldn't be hard to find one near you.

If you have a high enough resolution jpeg (or any other raster image), you can easily convert it to vector using Adobe Streamline (super old-school...but still an awesome program), or Illustrator CS2 which basically built Streamline into the program as a plug-in called LiveTrace. If you have a raster image you need converted to vector, email it to me, and i'll convert it for you.

What is it exactly you're trying to get cut?

I'm trying to get this cut and put onto my windscreen...  And possibly my car.  I just LOVE dragons.

Call your local sign shop and ask them what they want.

Over $50 if they convert to vector...  $25 if I do it.
