Title: New Member, new bike, new pics!!!! 56K beware
Post by: Liquidsilver on June 27, 2006, 06:45:00 PM
First off just want to say Hi to everyone on the boards, you'll look like a great group.  Well I've been lurking for a while and finally bought a bike.  Found it off of good ol' Craigslist.  Its a 91 GS500E painted flat army green.  Have been told it was a race/track bike in a former life, and has some of the parts left over.  The previous owner just used the bike to commute to work and back and decided to sell it because he got rained on a few times and didn't like it much.

Anyway on to the bike.  From what I can tell it has clipons, a fork dampner, rear spools, CFMotorsport rearsets, race tech fork internals, a different rear shock, a really loud custom exhaust, and steel braided brake lines.  AND.....it came with a box of parts included original rearsets, three diff shocks, engine covers, about 8 differents spockets, a front and rear wheel with mounted slicks, and a front and rear tire (pilots), stuff I am forgetting and a repair manual.  AND.....I got a ICON Motorhead jackets too.  Got is all for $1400.  May have been a bit much for a bike that ain't too pretty to look at, but it is exactly what I wanted.  I even wanted the flat army green paint.  I couldn't be happier.  Here are some pics ........ps, if you seen anything on the bike I haven't mentioned, tell me, trying to find out as much as possible about my new baby.

Alphafire, thanks for the link.   I tired looking before but came up empty.  Kinda sucks I could have bought it cheaper before, but you know what I am still happy.  And it did come with that new chain, just forgot to mention it earlier.

So, is that 28,000 or 18,000 miles?

Either way I would paint the exhaust headers or else they will rust through and create an even louder rumble.  I dig the green.

I am planning on painting the hearders soon or might try and get the highmount exhaust that is in the works right now.  Its kinda crazy I am the third person on this borad to have owned this bike.  Thanks for all the welcomes.  :thumb:

I beg to differ.  I think the pipe adds to the look.  A new pipe would look all wrong...although a beat-up aftermarket might do the trick.

Be sure to adjust that chain before you go too far.  By too far I mean out of your driveway.  Either there's an optical illusion going on, or it's actually drooping it's so loose....

No, you are right, gotta adjust the chain.  TwinLove 04 I agree with you a bit.  The bike has a little of a streetfighter / ratrod look to it, and anything too nice might make the rest of the bike look that much crappier.  I bought the bike wanting something I could drop, slide, crash and not really care about.  And in reality its a better idea to make sure she is mechanically sounds, learn to ride, and buy something nicer than buy a nice exhaust and paint job.  Maybe even convert the old lady back to the track at some point.

Welcome aboard glad to have you here.
Youre GS might be the only one with a steering dampner that I have ever seen how does that work for you never really thought of putting one on but a nice little mod also just a suggestion goto your local auto shop and buy a tin of prepsol to clean all the road and brake grime off it will also work on your rocker cover I've seen a few GS's in matt colours and they look good if the rest is clean. :thumb:

Wish I could tell you more about the dampner, but since its my first bike and all I have to compare it to is the little Honda 250s in the MSF class, I'm not much help.  Maybe after a while once I meet up with some fellow GS rides I will have a chance to compare a stock bike with mine and see if it does any good.  But until then its cool to know I have a unique mod on my bike.

Welcome to the board, and welcome to the GS club!  I actually think the bike looks pretty darned hot as-is. Streetfighters RAWK!  :thumb:

As for the price, I think you still got a good deal, especially if she has a new chain. As you can see from the GSTwin ad, we members try to offer each other a discount when we can.  :thumb:   :kiss3:

I kind of like the exhaust, too...it's unique (loud isn't my taste, but at least you'll be heard! ).

The headers definetly need love. And judging from the fluid on the inner forks, its time to redo those seals. Overall a nice looking bike   O0

Dude that's awesome.  My wife's 91 GS500E is painted Olive Drab green too!  I had a body shop paint the stuff with two coats of base, and one coat of matte clear.  It's not quite as flat, but it also doesn't smudge or get fingerprint stains, etc.

Congrats on the purchase.

Thanks for all the compliments.  I know streetfighters aren't everyone's cup of tea but the more I look at the bike, the more it grows on me.  For the headers I was thinking of doing a headerwrap but after reading all the negitive comments of here about wraps I think i'll stay away.....although I know the bike would look damn good with some black wrap  ;)

Welcome! I almost bought that bike through this forum. Glad I didn't, cuz now you can have it, and I have my '02 instead.

Just as an aside... any interest in parting out one of those spare shocks that came with it?

Possibly, let me figure out exactly what they came from so I can tell you what they are.  I think I got the best one on my bike right now, so I'd happily sell the others.  I'll PM you when I figure it all out.

Awesome, thanks.. and I see you're in St. Pete.. when you PM me, PM me an email, or screenname, or phone number where I can reach you.. I live in Naples, but head to St. Pete pretty often... a trip on the GS to meet up and ride sounds like fun to me.. maybe even this weekend, since my parents are there anyway, I was gonna go meet em just for fun...

I know you just got the bike.. but would you be up for a ride sat. or sunday? Or hell, any day... I can get off work whenever I want.. lemme know!
