Title: Jig is up!....take 2
Post by: makenzie71 on June 27, 2006, 09:36:25 PM
 :icon_rolleyes:....anyway...

The exhaust alpha had sent my way got in earlier...skippy.  I started work on building a jig to fit a bolt-in replacement so that will be available soon.  I also went ahead and setup for a slip-on replacement but it'll require permanent modification to the stock exhuast (duh)...slip ons are available now, though (see f/s section of Mak's Kitchen for details).

I think I'm going to narrow it down to three options for the GS:

Slip-on replacement.  This will require that the can be cut off at the weld + 1/2".  There will be a slip on flange that slips over the stock tubing, but it'll be a tad loose to allow for good alignemt, then secure with a single band clamp.  Can will then secure to the factory location, but it may be a bit closer to the swingarm and tire...I don't think it'll be an issue, though.  If anyone can tell me how much clearance there is between the factory can and the swinger/tire I can clear it up now.

Full system replacement.  This will be a full 2-1 system that bolts in place of stock.  The system will be made of 45mm runners and a 60mm collector to continue to the can.  Can will bolt up like stock.

Full high mount.  Same as above, but with the can hugging the tail.  I can't divulge too much about this one, yet, as I can't start fitment until I get a reliable test-bike in hand.

All exhausts will come with the carbon fiber cans.

The slip on will be $154 shipped anywhere in the US.

The bolt in replacement is $278 shipped anywhere in the US.

Specific pricing and details for the highmount will be released in time...target price is still $325.

The dual high mount I think is going to be abandoned as I feel plumbing it in might be a bigger hassle than I'm prepared to deal with.  I'll update on that.

Some shots of the slip-on assembly and the jig.

Sold product will run a bit smoother.  I don;t have any of my clamps or tooling here tonight.  Just kind of had to slap it together "loose".

Mak, very very very nice work, this is coming from a guy who does metal sculpture on the side, and I say that i wouldn't mind having that in a gallery next to my works. (Maybe a little polish, but the industrial look could fly in some galleries.)

Still doing that little Buell-esque under bike one? That thing made me really hot.  :cookoo:

I'm pinching my pennies two handed right now, I want I want I want!!!!!!!

Oh by the way Mak...

Not sure about the underbody one at the moment.  That goes along with the high-mount...I need a bike with me full time to develope that.  I dont think it's going to be up to par for anyone doing really hard riding...a right hander with the suspension bottomed out will drag the can.

As for clearance with the high mount...you'll have to lay the bike down for the can to touch.  With the standard exhaust the can's moved in about 2.15".  I think even there in order to drag the can you're going to be in trouble.

My driver's license says I'm 25...my mind says different...something about only sleeping on the weekends screws with me.

If you can do it with the stock headers you should be abl;e to do it with mine.

If not, then it's something I'll do my best to adress.

How loud is it?
Title: Re: Jig is up!....take 2
Post by: makenzie71 on June 28, 2006, 07:52:17 PM
these aren't going to be built with noise-consideration.  That being said, none of the systems should be very loud with the beffles in.  All of them will be pretty noisy with the baffles out...the slip-on likely being the noisiest.

I love a good straight through muffler!

Just wondering if you've considered cutting open the stock can so we can all be horrified by the amount of restrictive bends and baffles it has in there.

mak what about twin pipes one out each side?we started scabbing up a set several years ago on the bike while on the dyno and the torque #'s were incredible even though we lost a couple of ponies on top they were quite short for best results(the header part )and then had reverse cone megaphones for silencing purposes.

You mean two pipes on either side of the bike?  Or one pipe on either side?

At any rate, neither is really feasible with what I have to use.

I'd be interested in seeing it too. When I had my bike dynoed we couldn't get a tube down the pipe past the muffler.

Onefast and Brian...once I get a test bike, like I said, I'll build a few systems just for kicks...but I still think the plumbing on them will be heinous.

AS for a verbal description of the can:

Can is roughly 3-liters in capacity (yes, I filled it with water and measured).  There's 3 chambers, I think pretty equal in capacity.

Inlet dumps into 1-liter chamber.  From this chamber there are four 1" diameter pipes.  Two go through to the last chamber, two dump into the center chamber.  From the center chamber there is only one exit (right in the middle).  Gasses expand one final time in the last chamber and exit through a single 1" nozzle.

I'll get pics Sunday...I forgot the can and I don't want to just hack away at the center chamber...I'd like the runners to remain intact.  Gonna hit it with the plasma gun.

Mak, if you were any more surgical you'd have to spend five minutes washing your hands before you touched the GS and have a nurse handing you parts and tools.

Beep.... beep..... beeep .... beeeeeeeee...........

We're losing her, get the paddles quick!

ZAAaAAAAaAaaaaAAPPpPPpPPppppP!!!!

Beep, beep, beep.

Another GS saved by Mak.

Or as an alternative....

Mak has the technology, he can make it better, stronger, faster....

73mm. GS is 74mm stock.

Do pistons have to be made for a specific bike, or if they are the right size can you just fit them on?
Title: Re: Jig is up!....take 2
Post by: makenzie71 on June 29, 2006, 11:18:56 PM
My '81 YZ250 had a 454 piston in it...

If it fits...or if you can make it fit...you can use it.  Only considerations that need to be addressed are valve clearances...find something that gots divits in the right places and pattern (4 valve/5 valve/etc) and something that isn't so tall that it smacks the head...and so on...

So yeah...anything that fits.
Title: Re: Jig is up!....take 2
Post by: Alphamazing on June 29, 2006, 11:22:02 PM
So it'd need to be a 2-valve bike and just hope that the piston isn't too tall and we're pretty much golden huh?

Max size piston is 79mm in the stock sleeves (or so I'm told). 79mm gives a displacement of 555cc.

Why am I talking about this? I am selling this sucker next year.

Is the GS engine an interference engine?
Title: Re: Jig is up!....take 2
Post by: onefastgs500 on June 30, 2006, 05:56:51 AM
oh yeah the gs is an interference motor!!trust me mine has interfered in my bizness many times(seriuosly the valves will smack the sh*t out the pistons in the event of timing failure)the 555cc kits w/stk sleeves bores the sleeve to paper thin and they will chase a crack up them(seen it 4-5 times)if you knock out the sleeves and bore the jugs and top case half for larger size sleeves 555cc is mild we  are using custom made slugs that are 9mm over stk and still could go 3mil bigger and have plenty of sleeve left.

either way..... :icon_rolleyes:

Woooo getting heavy there.......

Has to do with if the piston will come "above deck" (into the combustion chamber) Valve reliefs, and a whole bunch of stuff, don't know the specifics for the GS, but if anyone has a diagram (with measurements) for the motor I can tell you exactly how extreme you can go. Everything I learned with cars applies here.

hahahaha never confuse possabillity with simplicity.  It required the help of four friends, lots of tools, saws, drills and wrenches and eventually giving $288 to someone who knew what he was doing to make it work before it was something to be ridden.

Then it was all laid to rest when one of my cohorts wrapped out the engine after a small jump...literally blew the jug apart...

If we had it all to do again we'd have sold the fucker as soon as we heard it run...lol

two big factors right off, oil supply and plumming

I'm not sure how we came up with 11-1 compression...the piston closed more on the 2-smoker than it did with the 454 so we just did some math.  And yeah we didn't really "hand" port it...we tried to get a couple close to stock spec bt we suked it up each time.  HAd to visit a machinest.  Had to go back to him after we figured out that we needed to use a diferent jug to hold the piston...not sure what kind we used...I think Jason stole it from someone else's killer project lol.

Why?  The all famous...why not?  Bored kids to stupid things.  Had we invested our time and efort into something worth a damn we'd be rish or famous or something...what fun would that be?

pi x (bore/2)2 x stroke x cylinders

555cc comes from 79mm pistons

3.14 x (7.9/2)2 x 5.66 x 2 = 554.869

That was more of a "Is it bore or stroke" question, thanx for the deets though Alpha.

Is there a way to stroke the engine? (alrighty pun kiddies, we all got it, you can stop laughing)

I dunno for 10% more displacement? (555 x 1.1 = 610.5) Bored and stroked....... That would be neat, especially with higher compression.

Yeah probably just a pipe dream.

I think someone said not to use a stone for all your hammering needs, but whatever.
