Title: Extended Warranty...worth it?
Post by: sharkfin25 on June 27, 2006, 10:08:30 PM
After looking and not finding a good used GS, I am taking the plunge and buying a new one. I pick it up tomorrow morning. My question for all of you is if you think the extended warranty is worth it or not? I guess I have a year to decided, since you can extend it any time up until the standard 1 year warranty expires. So, those of you who bought new, did you get the warranty?

Thanks! :icon_lol:

I have the damn warranty, and im gonna say NO

and the reason why is because of the paranoia  of voiding the warranty,

You are gonna wanna mod the HELL out of your bike but will be afraid to touch it with out voiding.

They tried to cancel my warranty because I charged my battery off of a truck that wasnt started

I had to lie and say, "when I say "JUMP START"  I mean push start,  I call it jump start because you have to jump on the bike after you start it moving."

They bought it somehow

Nice work on the "jump start" thing!  :thumb:

I did a search for warranty and the general consensus is that if you don't use the warranty in the first year, you probably won't need the extended. I think I'll pass at the dealership tomorrow and decide down the road if I need it.

Thanks for input!

I'd do it for $350.

It's key to note that in the United States it is illegal for a dealership or manufacturer to void or disregard a warranty over an unaffected part.  That's to say if you swap your exhaust...your warranty for your exhaust is gone.  If you swap the exhaust, and the engine siezes, the engine is still covered.

I can't remember what the "act" is called...I'll figure it out and come back.

It's the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.

http://www.xtremediesel.com/index.asp?PageAction=Custom&ID=44

Essentially, it saves you from anything except stupidity.  If you put on an aftermarket exhaust and take the necessary precautions to prevent damage (jetting, fuel, etc), or if you can prove that your aftermarket exhaust requires no supporting modifications, then they can not hold you accountab;e for spontaneous oil system failure.  Etc.

I had regular 12 months warranty on the new bike. At the end of the 1st year I had the same question. In the end, I decided not to get it, because after all, you just need to change the oil and do all the maintenance in a regular basis to keep the bike in top shape.
So far so good.

the simpson's holds the answer! in that episode where homer finds out he has a crayon in his brain, at the end when moe is putting it back in:

(moe taps the crayon up homer's nose)
homer: DEFENSE! DEFENSE! DEFENSE!

moe: pretty good, but not quite far enough
(taps the crayon a bit further)
homer: extended warranty? how can i lose!

can you use a wrench and read a manual?  I seriously doubt $350 worth of stuff will go wrong with your bike in the life of the warranty.  Remember, this bike has been around for a long time, so design flaws and manufacturer defects are pretty much ruled out by this point.  And if anything does go wrong, you can easily fix it yourself for fairly cheap.

I Believe it's called the Moss-Magnuson Act (I've seen it on the Ninja Riders Club Forum)
