Title: Ok, I gotta get the GS up three flights of stairs
Post by: TadMC on June 30, 2006, 04:53:53 PM
I wanna rejett, drop a lunchbox, and maybe a new sprocket,

I'd just like to do it in a controlled environment, thing is I live in an apartment complex with no garage, so it looks like im gonna be luggin that thing up 3 flights... well really 2 and a half to get it into my apartment.

I got 3 of my buddies to help me out with it, but im not going to do it untill I get my jets, filter, and sprocket ordered

PS, Ill take pictures of the WHOLE thing, getting it up the stairs, it sitting in my bedroom, the rejet, the box,  the sprocket, and getting that thing down!

Bah, garages are "nice to have" but not need to have". I don't have a garage, I do everything right out in my driveway. Rain or shine.

See if OMW will let you use his garage  8)

You will spend more time hauling that up and down the stairs than you will doing the job. If anything, bring the carbs upstairs and tweak them if you really must.

All I gotta do is gett it up here once and get it down once.

Im gonna take my time with the carb and sprocket, so it'll be a couple of days in my back bedroom

Title: Re: Ok, I gotta get the GS up three flights of stairs

'cause one guy tripping on one step could mean SERIOUS injury to one or everyone involved...  AND totally f%$k your bike.

It's just retarded...

THEN!!!  You have to get it back down...

Just be a man and beg someone to use their garage.

Call 1800PODS... have em drop off one of those portable storage units in your driveway. Use it for 3 days. Then return it. Duh.

Honestly .. I bring my bike up into the other half of my double house to store it over the winter... Its gotta come up some steps arount the back of the house and up a few more steps to the kitchen..  I think its worth it.. I get 2-3 buddies to help w/ mine and we have no trouble... Be careful it is easy to go to fast and drop it. Get some wood planks measure and make sure it will fit in everywhere you need to go ahead of time  :thumb:

Have beer chilled and waiting for your budz

honestly man bad idea. most of the jobs you wrote of, can be done with the parts not the entire bike. pull the parts outside, bring them in. cause 1 mishap, bike falls over. im not saying it will, however the chancwe is there up one flight let alone 3. but bike falls over apt mngrs get hella pissed etc etc etc just my opinion though

It's only 400 pounds...  I'm sure many people have lugged heavier objects up and down stairs (refridgerator, stove, etc...)  Just be careful...

BTW...  If you're gonna take pictures of the whole process, won't your buddies be pissed that you're not helping them?!?!?!

When I was in high school, my roommate and I would store our bike in our apartment on the 12th floor, so that we don't have to pay for the parking for the whole winter. We would drove our bike into the elevator, and to fit the bike into the elevator, we would drive the front wheel up until it is resting on the side of elevator, then back it out when it reach 12th floor, then push it across the corridor into our apartment.

But I don't think I would want to carry a bike up any stairs......  :icon_confused:

Put bike on center stand and becarful. . to much movement could knock the bike over. :icon_mrgreen:

OMFG Bad idea.... I move Appliances so I know it's possible but still, Just because it is possible doesn't mean it is a good idea.

Tad I hate to do it but this is so a -50 situation. -50 if you do it. (-1,000,000 if someone gets hurt.)

But if you do it, be a man, ride it up.

If you ride it it is so totally a +50. (Keep in mind that's a +50 for hilarity only)

Really though, I'm sure one of your friends has a garage or at least a carport.

ok.... coming from me... this is completely possible.. no biggy.

The only thing I got to say is you can work on the bike somewhere else than in ur apartment. Better off just going to autozone inthe morning and hanging out in their parking lot.

installing a lunchbox/jetting won't take very long. You'd end up spending moret ime getting it up/down than actually working on it.

Ditto.  You have to remove the carbs and airbox anyway, and the whole time you're tweaking with them the bike is sitting doing nothing.  It could just as easily do nothing in the parking lot.  After pulling the carbs I would put the tank and seat back in place and put a cover over the bike (if you're nervous about scavengers or something).

The sprocket is definitely a 10-minute parking lot job.

Somehow I get the feeling that no matter what we say, we'll be looking at photos of a neighborhood "bike raising" before long.  After all, "It'll be cool."  How can you argue with that?  :dunno_white:

(I mean, if I can document a valve adjustment and rotor and pad replacements in my driveway, even though I have a perfectly good shed ...  :icon_rolleyes:)

Thought it was 396.8 dry, according to the suzuki website...  Not saying you're wrong and they're right, just wondering where you got that figure?

Im just worried that when I take the box, and carbs out that the exposed components will get dirty and will give me problems.  Tjats why I WAS going to do it,  secondly I wanted to take my time with everything, but since yall are saying that it wont take very long even if I take my time, I may not need to do that.

Just shove a rag in the holes after carb removal.. thats all you need to protect.

I let mine sit outside under a tarp w/ the carbs removed for about a wekk... didnt have any trouble  :thumb:

Twice?  "Moi?" :dunno_white:

I think that once you open up the carbs you will be pleasantly surprised at how straightforward the rejetting process is.

* Drill out the brass caps that hide the mixture screws, adjust the screws.

* Unscrew the existing jets and screw in the new ones.

* Replace the float bowls![/list]

I have a garage, and I still choose to do the carbs outside:  the lighting is better.  I like to take apart the carbs in a plastic washbasin, so that no parts get lost:

To get the screws loose, I stand in the basin with the carbs between my feet, and press down with a loooong screwdriver (better leverage).  I just leave the hoses attached to the carbs, sometimes even with the petcock attached to the other end: less mess, and less work to do.
