Title: Oil Blow-by......
Post by: vlt06 on June 30, 2006, 06:05:17 PM
Hi Guy's,

I am new here so first and foremost..... HI!!!!!

Just wanting to get some opinions......

I bought a new GS500E in March this year which is currently on 9500 kms...... When I start early in the morning I will throw the choke on for about a minute of two just to give it a little help warming up before I hit the highway sitting on about an average of 120km/ph for about 50km each way.

I have noticed that when the initial choke is on, the is a little oil blow-by (white smoke). Last done oil change a 6000kms and checked the oil today (95000kms) and was on the low make exactly.

Is this a normal occurrence of do the rings need a little attention due to them either not being bedded in from word go????

Opinions much appreciated!!!!

Cheers Guy's!!!!

nah thats normal, by having the choke in you are restrictiong air flow so its making it rich, its just the unburnt fuel thats causing the smoke. i gather your on a european bike so should be set up quite well, you shouldnt need your choke more than a few seconds,
welcome to the site, every one is here to help,  :thumb:

Thank's Dude!

Yeah, I am in Australia...

Yeah, that is what I thought but rich = black smoke, where as white (In a bike sence) = oil.

Maybe I thought that until it warms (Pistons and Rings enlarge to fill the bore correctly) is the reason but just want to know if this is a usually thing?

It's probably just morning condensation in the pipe / cylinders burning off.  White smoke = water, blue smoke = oil, black smoke = fuel.  As long as it clears up quickly it's nothing to worry about.
