Title: Prauge Trip Pix - second attempt!
Post by: Cal Price on July 01, 2006, 03:14:51 PM
This is bernkastel Kues9 where I stayed first night, the "Bikers welcome" Pension Gramst, the town and Bike Park.

Second night here, a place called Cheb but on German roadsigns it was Eger which threw me for a while. I found this place after a hairy twistee hairpin ride on very wet roads after coming up from Bayreuth to Marktredwitz in Germany.

They have Gingerbread Houses there...

and put road signs in strange places

Then on the lonesome road to Prague near Karlovy Vary.

On the road I met a youg Czech couple at a Benzine station on a Honda 1300 going to prague to buy her a new helmet.

As I was following the "Centrum" signs through the 'burbs of Prague I was getting very uncomfortable with the slippery cobblestone streets, trams lines and some very poor surfaces so I pulled off route to a small square to consult my map, Phillips multiscal europe 2006, as I was doing this a guy, about 40 wearing a business suit came out of a building nearbye and I made the "Where the heck am I?" gesture at the map. I was more than pleased when he said in perfect English "It's not where you are that matters but where you want to be" a statement that is true on many levels, much more use than "if I were going there I would not start here" I said that I wanted to get into the city centre and find a Hotel. He said that it so happened he was going the way, pointed to his new black Skoda and said "follow me" Boy was I pleased. I followed for 20-30 mins through the lunchtime mini-rush through cobbled alleyways over mountainous tram lines and eventually he stops, gets out and says "This is Wenceslas Square, have an enjoyable visit and be careful of pickpockets,"there is pretty much nothing else to worry about as there is a very strong Police presence on the streets.

I was hot as hell, dropped my jacket and helmet by the bike right here

When I cooled of a bit I decided to try the nearest Hotel, the guide books all advised "Don't go to Prague without accomodation booked as it can be difficult to find" as sonn i I walked into the reception the Ladies all-Czech pie eating champ snapped NO! FULL! Perhaps the state of me and the T-Shirt soaked in perspiration did not help. I then tried the "Grand Hotel Evropa" next door, I thought it might be a bit out of my league but they were very helpful, had secure parking and would discount the 3000 crowns per night by 10% for cash, crowns, Euros or a mixture. All in all for the absolute centre of the city I thought that was OK so here is where I checked in for five nights

It was a bit like being in one of those elegant cary Grant filmsets, here is "my" landing

Here are some shots from around the city.

Wow..beautiful...it makes we want to go to Prague.

What is that first picture of in the no smoking, roller blading, guns etc. sign?

My favorite part of the post was the cow pic's caption..."Kerry Cow-slayer!!"  hahaha

You'll have to upload one or two to the gallery.  I'm guessing you have a couple that will fit in the "scenic photos" section  O0

SuZuki10, it was the gun that got my attention but I could not make my mind up if the first one was No Drinking or No Chewing Gum. That sign was on a place called Walstein gardens, I saw the "No Guns" sign on Exchanges and Post Offices etc, like if you were going in to do a holdup the sign would stop you!

I am mulling over the Idea of doing Istanbul/Asia Minor in the summer of '07 or '08 and I would be looking to do that with one or two other riders. If I'm still fit '08 looks a possibility, I'm 60 now so gotta do these things whilst I still can.
