Hey Michigan riders. (Ontario, Ohio and Indianna riders included as well.) We've virtually met and chatted in the S.E. Michigan anyone? (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=23792.0) thread. But I've yet to see any planning thread to have a meeting and ride some interesting place.
So here it is. We need two things; a DATE and PLACE to meet and a ROUTE to ride. (Okay, that's really three things.)
First -- the DATE. I propose a Saturday -- August 12th to be exact. Far enough out there to allow some discussion. May not work for everyone so that's where the counter-proposals start.
Second -- the PLACE. Best place to meet in the late morning I've found is a Donut or Coffee shop. Of course, it's also dependent upon the route.
Third -- the ROUTE. I'm all for ideas. The best areas tend to be where there are hills or rivers. Bonus if there are hills AND rivers.
The best areas I know are red circled below:
But this is where personal experience comes in. If anyone has a favourite route, please nominate. As a guide I'd suggest these constraints:
- Within 90 minutes (60 miles) of riding to the start by most or all attendees.
- The route should be rideable in 2 hours or less.
- The route should start at the meeting place, and complete at another rest area for final chatting, bio break and riding home.
- Riding home shouldn't be a whole lot farther than getting to the meeting location in the first place.
The days are getting shorter. It would be great to meet some locals and chat about our bikes, ambitions and motorcycling in general. So, what do ya say? Wanna get together? Here's your chance to plan something.
ride into canada :)
I would be interested in coming up if you guys did something around the Lansing/Detriot area and if str8racin would let me spend the night.
I'm totally down for this. I'm in Alma again so I'm pretty much in the middle of the lower penisula. I also have a realatively large house to myself for anybody the might need a place to crash (AJ :thumb:). I have been tentatively planning a camping trip the weekend of Aug 12th, but it's something that isn't a big deal if I miss. I am open every weekend between July 22 and Aug 5th tho. As to where we go I really don't care, I've heard that up north and the west side of the sate have nice scenery. That's about I'll I've got for now.
i live in west mi thats why it has the best riding. along the west shore there is alot of cool roads. but i think im up for just about any thing. see y'all.
Up 22 to and around the Leelanau Peninsula is a kick-ass road, along Sleeping Bear Dunes. Unfortunately it's a long haul for those in the lower latitudes of the state.
There's some interesting character to the roads between Big Rapids and Ludington, and also between Mason, Pinckney and Whitmore Lake.
Been up in the Au Sable area a few weeks back. Nice roads but a long haul.
Anybody have any preferences, or some ideas of their own. Time to break out the Microsoft Streets and Trips and look for curvey roads. :)
I'm down for meeting in Lansing. And thank you redshift  for finally getting some interest. I know a few of you that came into the S.E. post seen my private messages and posts to try to get somehting going here. I really hope we can get something really cool going.
Few questions...
1. is it gonna be a one day ride?
2. if anyone is up for a BBq im sure my parents would be more then happy to host plus im located in howell decent riding area.
3. what is evryones tolerance for distance? (me personally i rode 300 mi in one day..total.. and that was about all i could handle.
I think that is about it for now...umm Well I didint get a chance to meet him personally or chat with him on here but it might be an nice idea for a rich memorial ride for those who did know him..just a thought and to show our support in GStwin fasion. 8)
1. My thoughts were to have a one-day ride. I figure this would be a "get to know ya" event, so it would be best to meet and chat, then enjoy the roads local to the meeting location.
2. Very kind of you for the BBQ idea. Although I'd have to get back to my family, others may be available. Remember that it's dark by 10:00 pm.
3. Good point. Not everyone has the stamina for for a 300 mile day. If anyone has a hesitation for distance, please speak up and we'll try to take it into consideration in route planning.
You can be assured that those that have been here for some time will have Rich in our thoughts. It would be a nice idea that we acknowledge his memory before the ride.

I can probably offer July 29th and August 26th as alternatives. Unfortunately I can't make weekends of July 23rd, August 5th or 19th unless I get a lawyer.
Lots of interesting placed we could go. We can even ride through
Hell if anyone is interested. Never been there myself, but would be interesting to be able say I'd been to Hell and back on my GS500. :)
Hell is actually about 15mins from my house. My house is about 2 miles off of m106 beautiful road. I didint realize how cool it really was untill I rode down to MIS from my house. Even in a car it was enjoyable. I'm sure my gf got sick of me saying "man i wish i had my bike right now" :thumb:
But m106 to M52 all the way down to irish hills, very cool trip. Plus hell is only 5 mi from the 106 - 52 junction.
Oh and possibly hit 12 down there too. st8racin would know how nice the area really is being its right near MIS.
Yup some nice roads down around MIS. When I went down there last month I was wishing I rode instead of drove. I think my vote goes to riding in that area since we might be able to get a few out of state ppl up to ride with us then.
I'm detecting a preference with you two. (Per my original map, it's the lower right circled area.)
I've spent the last half hour looking at this area of Michigan:
There are a rats nest of roads in here, and almost none of them are straight for more than a mile or two. :) Take for instance SR36, or North Territorial Road, anything that goes east - west really. If we could plan a route that does a circle in the heart of this area, I'd say we have ourselves a ride.
Since Silverback and St8racin are locals, do either of you have some idea of places to meet, and preferences for roads to take. Post some information (road names, directions, etc) and I'll plug it into MS Streets & Trips and post the results.
Dexter Trail from Mason to Stockbridge is an awesome road. I have no idea where it is on that map but it's a good road to ride. I pretty much always saw other riders out on it when I would take it. It runs right into 52 so it leads to other possibilites.
Sarah, I found the Dexter Trail in Streets & Trips. (I'll post an update to the map above with that road highlighted.) Up close it seems there can't be more than a mile of straight section in the whole stretch from Mason to Stockbridge!!
I'm thinking there may be a way to continue from Stockbridge to perhaps to Dexter, then up to Brighton, then head south-east down towards Pinckney, on towards Jackson, then back up to Mason-Lansing -- in a Figure 8 pattern. The roads don't seem to naturally go south-east, but maybe zig-zagging is where the fun is.
Will have to noodle on possible paths with Streets & Trips and get back to you all.
this all sounds good to me, im good for 300+mi's see y'all
so who is up for august 12th for a tentative day?
perhaps a alternate day incase of rain?
 rain sucks....
Okay, so here's what I've come up with:
The trip starts & ends in Mason. We pick up the Dexter Trail (2) and meander to Stockbridge (3). Pick up North Territorial Road (4)to Dexter (5). Head up to Brighton (6), then left to Pinckney (7), through Hell (8) to Gregory (9). Through Stockbridge again to Pleasant Lake (10), then back up through Bunker Hill to pick up the Dexter Trail and back to Mason.
Streets & Trips says 120 miles and three hours (without stops). I suspect we'll stop in Dexter or Brighton, then in Mason.
Too much? Not enough? Any other ideas?
I'm thinking that with stops and chatting we're talking about five hours, give or take. At to it your travel time to and from -- pretty well the whole day is used up.
I offer July 29th, August 12th, August 26th or September 2nd as possible dates I can make it.
I can do September.
I like the route you came up with. I suppose we need a meeting place now huh. I know there is a meijers off the kipp rd exit of 127 (in Mason) and that takes you right to dexter trail.
Here's my open weekends...
July 22-23
July 29-30
Aug 5-6
Aug 26-27 (but is the weekend right before the semester starts)
Sept 2-4
Sept 16-17
Aug 12-13 is my tentative camping trip but can be cancelled if necessary
I suggest aug.5th and keep aug 6th as a raincheck...just in case
scratch that....forgot about your earlier post...lawyer? interetsting.
also is this GS only...i know a few ppl with other sport bikes that might be interested
Yeah I was wondering about the other riders thing too since I have a friend with a bandit that lives right in the middle of that area.
Hey,
Thanks for initiating this event.
Something in the Lansing area on Aug 12 might be cool--especially in that area's more rural sections. I like the various parameters you listed. They seem reasonable.
Hope we can firm something up.
Steve
Royal Oak, MI
July 29th looks like it works for two of us...anybody else?
It's sounding like July 29th is gaining favor. The 30th would also be good. Hate to lock anybody out, especially AJ -- maybe the July29th weekend works for you too? If not, maybe we do it again on Labor Day weekend -- I mean the hard work of root planning seems done and if the roads are great, I'll all for a Do-Over.
Meeting in Mason was my first guess (we had to start somewhere), but we can meet at any of the corner locations and still ride the circuit. If Mason has a Meijer then it should be easy to spot -- those places are huge -- and they typically have a coffee shop that we can gather at. Someone can look up the exit off of 127?
As for other bikes, sure, bring'em on. We shouldn't discriminate.
The exit for the meijers in Mason is Kipp Rd. I don't think that it has an exit number. If you're coming from the north turn left off the exit and it's on the other side of the overpass on your right.
July 29th and the 30th are out for me.... I have to work. But go rigt ahoead with this date if it is when the most people can participate. I've been working this job long enough that I miss out on a lot of things, so I am used to it.
Hey, then keep the Labor Day weekend open, AJ. If we do July 29th and like the roads, we'll plan for another even that fits your schedule. Maybe even a third in Late September or Early October -- a Fall Colours ride. :)
im excited that more then just a 2 person ride is evolving into somthing cool... :thumb:
abronco1 needs to get his but in here...havent seen him in a while in fact he was the one that went for our two bike meet...lol
just tell me what day and time. see y'all
Ok I know there are more ppl from MI here...anybody else interested in going?
Okay folks -- get the word out.
Here's what we have so far:
WHEN: Saturday, July 29th, meeting at 10:00 am. (Plan your departure time accordingly.)
WHERE: Meijer Superstore, Cafe area, 550 Hull Rd, Mason, south-east off of the East Kipp Road exit of US127.
ROUTE: See Proposal in Reply #16 of this thread (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=28167.msg302259#msg302259).
If it is an obvious bad weather day, we call it off by 8:00 am Eastern Time by posting in this thread. Would have to be solid rain predicted for the area for the morning. If the prediction is for Isolated Thunderstorms, we attempt to meet and if the weather goes bad by or after, we decide at Meijer's whether to go or not. If it gets bad during the route, hey, that's motorcycling...
Okay, who's in for this arrangement?
1) Sarah (st8racin)
ok im in,lets ride.
for those that cant follow instructions
1. Str8racin (Sarah)
2. Denman
Thanks AJ. Sorry you can't make this trip (next one for sure). You seems to have a natural tendency to force order. I may not be able to manage this crowd on my own. :)
NM
I would prefer that if we have a ride on Labor Day weekend it be on Sunday. I work nights so Saturday would be near impossible to make unless I switched work days with someone.
Sunday? I think we can arrange that. :thumb:
RVert...I'm not really in that area but I think Silverback is pretty close so he might be able to help you out.
1) Sarah (st8racin)
2) Rusty (my friend with a bandit 600, if he doesn't have to work)
3) Denman
4)

5)
possibly one or two non GS's a CBR600 and a YZF 600 BIG maybes...so if they shoy they do if not im not changing plans for them
all bikes should be welcom.
I should mention that we will probably not be leaving Meijer's "right at 10:00 AM". Ten AM is when we're due to meet up at the Cafe.
We'll probably chat some, down a coffee & donut and leave by 10:30-10:45 when we've collected everyone who's saying they're coming. I don't know about you, but I'm chronically late. (It's probably in my "Y" chromosone -- my wife says she doesn't have a problem getting to places on time.)
Some of us are coming from a long way off. Traffic and construction, not to mention getting lost and backtracking are facts of life. It's supposted to be a fun day, so take your time and be safe. If you suffer from this defect, plan your arrival and leave 15-30 minutes earlier to compensate.

Oh oops, I was gonna take him off that part of the list and just count him towards the possible non GS's since he doesn't know his work schedule that far in advance.

I recommend one change to the route though...
There is no road at the point I indicated on the map, if we continue up Meridian road, then cut back we can still catch the twisties at point 12 on the map. Other than that, the route is great. I've ridden every road mapped and they're all good, I've just never ridden them all in one day....
Thanks RedShift for taking charge and getting this arranged! :thumb:
Thanks for pointing that out FlyingBeagle71. I suppose it would have been obvious to us. Surprised the 2005 version of Streets & Trips would lie to me -- the program tells me that there's a "Baseline Road" that makes the connectiion between Meridian road and Williamston road.
No matter. As you say, these roads are fantastic in comparison to the "L7" and flat prarie roads around my parts.
No problem, I live on 106 just west of Munith, so your route will pass right by my house. Pretty cool! :)
It'll be nice to have a local along to make sure we don't get lost. :)

I don't know about you folks, but to paraphrase George Throrogood (http://www.georgethorogood.com/), I (usually) ride alone -- yeah -- with nobody else. Kinda easy to make a last second decision and apart from signaling, not confuse anyone but yourself.
So I went into my IE favourites and dug up some topical reading material on Group Riding:
- Group Riding Tips (from AMA Website) (http://www.amadirectlink.com/roadride/Riderresc/groupRide.asp)
- Common Hand Signals (http://www.amadirectlink.com/roadride/Riderresc/groupRideSignals.asp)
- Motorcycle Group Riding Etiquette -- Hand Signals and Riding Rules (http://njmc.org/etiquette/)
I offer links to two separate Hand Signals are they are largely complementary, not to mention that the latter shows the favourite of many, the "Ticked Off" signal:
Happy reading. There will be a test the day of the ride (only half kidding). :)

You should make a new thread in the FAQ for this post... Great info.

... Or perhaps a Sticky in the Meet and Greet section? Or maybe both. I'll check my privileges and give it a shot. :thumb:
I vote both
y'all have done a great job of geting all of us togather for this ride thanks. see y'all
what is the largest group you have riden with. when i ride on the spring run in muskegon you cant see the front or the end of the group. see y'all.
You win. The most I've ridden with is 30. We split in three groups, with a lead and sweep rider for each group. So technically the largest group I've been in is 10.
I've ridden with other groups of 2, 3, 5 and 7. So yeah, I've been a part of four group rides. Guess I'm still a rookie at this too. :)
Thanks for the links on group riding. I was going to start a topic in the O&E forum asking for advice on group riding. Don't need to now, those links are great!
This will be the first time I've rode with anyone else. I'm looking forward to it!!!
that spring run ride is krazy, side by side tearing ass down the freeway then every body trys to stop then takes off like krazy. i think it's a date with danger,oh yea did i say it's 90% harley heads on that ride. y'all know how that goes. the 29th will be a great day.
Two weeks!!!!!! And counting... 8)
two weeks thats forever from now.
You've planned a great ride. I did a lot of it this morning. I'm taking the family on vacation that weekend, so have a great time!
hey y'all in may there is the blessing of bikes in baldwin that is a cool place to ride too.
Only a wk to go! :thumb:
Sweet, only a week left! I'm going to scout out the section from Mason to Stockbridge and back tomorrow. I'll hit the other parts of the route next week after work.
Take good (mental) notes. Write it down when you get a chance and share either here or at Meijer during the pre-ride gathering.
Ride safe.
did i see the word mental,by the time the 29th gets here i'll be mental case. i have cleaned my bike so much i think im starting to polish the paint off it. wwwaaaaagooooaaaahhhh im going nuts.
i better get crakin on clwaning my bike then....its so dirty from my ride to clevland in the rain for mroe then 50% of the ride....
Hey all sorry I won't be able to make it I'm going to Pittsburgh with my fiance. Silverback, long time no talk! I'll be with all in spirit have a great safe ride and I'll definitely plan on the next group ride!
:dunno_white: bahh pitsburg will always be there....oh well...have fun and be safe.
Okay, I've scouted all of the roads east of Stockbridge. Everything looks pretty good.
One of the roads changes to dirt for about a mile, I've marked it in Red on the map. It's a Detroit dirt road though, lots of oil down and really hard packed so it shouldn't be an issue. It can be dusty though, I can scout a new path around it if we want to avoid dirt.
The only other bad spot is the road into and out of Hell. It's pretty bumpy, but as long as we ride single file it shouldn't be an issue.
As for rest stops, do we want to stop once half way through, or two stops at the 1/3 and 2/3's point. If one stop, then I recomend the DQ at Hamburg. If two stops, the I recommend the DQ or Coffiee house in Dexter and either the gas station or ice cream place in Stockbridge.
Keep your fingers crossed that we'll get good weather!!!
I mighta known the road into and outa Hell would be Hell. (Sorry, couldn't resist.) I've been told to Go to Hell many times in my formative years, so I felt this trip might should have fulfilled that request. I can take a few bumps if you guys can.
A mile of dirt road isn't bad, unless it's raining or just did. Then it's best to avoid unless dry. Why not play it by ear -- as long as you know where it's at we can use appropriate judgement.
I'm for a stop at the 1/2 or 2/3 mark. A DQ is great, unless someone is lactose intollerant or watching their weight. I'm shooting for getting to Meijer's early and getting a snack while waiting. I shouldn't be in a hurry to stop, but we'll poll the group before departing.
As noted it'll be hot by mid-day so bring a couple of bottles of water just in case. (I freeze mine the night before to maximize the refreshing effects.)
Give your bikes a good T-CLOCK's inspection the night before -- can't hurt.
Nice job with the map.
Ok I have to stop at full throttle in Lansing and pick up a couple parts before I head to meijers and they don't open till 9:30 so I will try to be there as close to 10am as possible but plz don't leave without me. I'll have to do my best to not talk a lot while I'm in there. Hopefully the chance of rain stays low or just goes away totally. See ya'll saturday.
no body gets left behind.
We could never leave someone as cool as you behind... :icon_mrgreen:
This might be my first and last group ride... trying to find a job in the cleavland area asap. I'm going to be moving in with my gf down there. They have some really nice roads in twinsburg where she lives. So i'll be there rain or shine. :thumb:
Sending PM with my cell number, give me a call if you have any problems meeting up...
:icon_lol: Can't wait for tomorrow!!!
Got home about 1:00 or so... hope everyone made it home safe.
Had a blast and hope we can ride again before I move. :thumb:
I got back about 4:15 -- well in time for the dinner event my wife had on for tonight. Looks like I'm in the good books (so far). Gotta go to light the BBQ. Will leave more later. Ciao...
well i got home around 4:40 and thats a long ride back to muskegon. that was the best ride i have been on + the cool riders i met i will meet y'all some other time for a ride. see y'all.
Just a note of appreciation for all those that rode yesterday. Sarah, Gregg, Denman, Damien, Nick, Silverback, and the guy with the Orange GSX-R 750 (I'm poor with names :icon_confused: )
Glad Nick was able to lead. He rides with spirit and the corners flew past. :) When it was my turn to lead, I only missed one turn and we recovered. Although we altered our path and never hit Brighton, don't think anyone was sad over it.
Appreciation also to Gregg to take the final lead and finish the final leg of our "X" in Pinckney area. Although it was 90F+ out there, we didn't loose anyone and there were only smiles afterwards. Great day and new friends. What could be better.
I had a good time yesterday too. I didn't make it home till about 5:30, went ride around with Damon and Nick before we decided to head home. That was Wade with the orange GSX-R.
It was hot but definitely a good time. We'll have to do it again sometime.
Yep, I agree with eveyone else. It was a great ride. Very spirited on the first leg to Stockbridge!! I've got a few pics that I'll post when I get a chance. It was really hot, but a very good time...I'm looking forward to our next ride.
Well, I had a lot of fun in MI... Quads + Sand Dunes == WEEEEEE WHOOOOOO :icon_mrgreen:
well did y'all ride on sunday? im also looking forward to our next ride. for shure ask nick wade and damon to ride next time. nick and damon are krazy on the freeway i had lol's see y'all.
when is our next ride?
My August is spoken for. Labor Day weekend, Saturday is a possibility, but cannot commit.
I guess I need an enticement. Someone suggest someplace reachable yet where I've never been, and I'll see what I can do.
I'm game if I can get my bike's fuel starvation issue resolved soon.
One possibility: The Oxford/Metamora/Dryden area is very nice--mostly farmlands surrounded by nice curves and twists and long stretches w/o stop signs or lights.
Ever been there?
Steve
Royal Oak
... and I need to do something about my Carb's and a weak rear shock before I do another full-day ride.
Checking out the base of the thumb may be interesting. Must be more there than what meets the eye. Looking at MS Steets & Trips, the roads seem to straighten out going north-east of Clarkson. Would have thought south-west of Clarkson to be more entertaining, but perhaps we're talking more traffic and residences down there.
What of where our Denman hails from -- the Muskegon area or parts north? A bit of a haul from Royal Oak though.
I'd be interested in another swing between Mason & Dexter if it's late September - mid-October. Colours would be great somewhere in between. :)
yep sept-oct sounds good for me. that mason/dexter aera was cool,im up for a sunday the 20'th. cant do labor day weekend, after that i can. as far as my area goes i have olny riden close to town and dont know much about back roads over here, leonard st is cool in grand rapids lots of cars. see y'all
Sept/Oct sounds good to me too. I'd like to see us check out one of the shorelines, maybe over by Muskegon, but I'll go anywhere...
Hey all, have been on here much to see this be resurrected. I'm down for another group ride. As of now my schedule is pretty open but I do start school again this fall semester so IDK how things will go once that starts. I'll just keep checking back to see if anybody had more exact dates.
EDIT: I can't do sept 9-10th because of national guard that weekend.
i will start looking around over here for some good places to ride. i know a dude that road up to la cross and back in one day along the shore line and sayd it was a great ride. i still liked that last ride.
where is every body? i havent had a chance to look for a good ride over here. i have ask jeff to help he rides alot more than i do,every one rides more than i do. i met jeff here at GStwin. he now has a ZX6. see y'all

Still look'n forward to a Sep/Oct ride. My bike is currently down, really down, but I should have it back up and running by then...
The lakeshore sounds good to me, it would be nice to try and catch the color change...

Notice there are no pictures of me!!!
Denman asked that I post this map of NW MI. It looks like a good area to ride, even if it is a little ways away. I would possibly look into spending the night somewhere in the area, maybe a campground or cheap motel...

Thanks for posting those pics Gregg. I didn't even think to bring my camera so I got nothing.
that is along way up there. i need somthing closer as i wimp out easy. lets set a date im open 99.9% of weekends. see y'all.
Just wanted to bump this back to the first page.
Also we should probably try to get a date set pretty quick since it seems to be cooling off pretty fast this year and I'm a total whimp when it comes to cold. Other than this upcoming weekend my schedule is pretty open.
I'd be down for joining up with everyone this time around (had a family gathering for the first one :( ). I work most saturdays at the dealership, but would be able to request it off real easily. My new job's been keeping me WAY busy so I haven't been on here in a long while. Let's just set a date and I'll be there!
I'm not going to be able to make it to a ride this fall...   My bike is down until next spring. I got my cylinder head back this weekend, but It's going to take a few months to get all the parts bought to get it back together. By next spring, I should have a completely rebuilt engine, new front shocks, new Katana rear shock, fairings removed...almost a new bike...
"One possibility: The Oxford/Metamora/Dryden area is very nice--mostly farmlands surrounded by nice curves and twists and long stretches w/o stop signs or lights."
I live in Metamora! I would really love to get together with some other riders. Too bad I just sold my GS over labor day weekend (lucky girl got a good deal too). Though I should have my new SV by this weekend 8). I'll try to keep track of this thread just in case.
BTW: I'm terrible at planning out routes, so someone with those skills get at it! Its getting bloody cold . . .

I'm in a bit better shape (bike-wise), as my new rear shock and battery are now in and it's rideable and reliable again. But my availability to help schedule another ride while the weather holds is unlikely. Next three weekends are spoken for.
But that shouldn't stop others from coming up with a ride. Next year I'm interested in exploring the Lake Michigan side of the state.
I'd love to go over to the west side of the state (graduated from Western) it's gorgeous over there....I'm still up for a ride this fall....I have the next two weekends open, anyone interested?
im open.
I'm in. Thats only if SV's are invited . . .
We could plan on doing a thumb ride, or maybe another Pinckney? I've really been wanting to go up the TOT, but thats probably going to have to wait till spring.
yes SV'S are cool well i like just about any thing on two wheels. here in muskegon it's nice but it's windy big time today. i have riden my bike just three times sence that last group ride. im done for this year, after christmas im geting new tires. talk later.
Sorta OT, but I'm looking for MI advice over here and figured I could get some attention quicker by posting it here: http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=31722.new#new
