Title: Strange noise = bike runs bad
Post by: stephan on July 06, 2006, 01:58:00 PM
I was on a nice ride this weekend when my bike began to act up.

The idle dropped from normal to the point where it wanted to stall at stop lights.  I can also hear a *tst, tst, tst, tst" noise as the engine is running at low RPMs.  Also when idling if you "blip" the throttle it hesitates before kicking up the RPMs.  At higher RPMs it seems to run just fine.

Any ideas???  Air intake leak?

Thanks!

Methinks an intake leak would Increase, rather than decrease idle speed. (My old Kawi idled at 6k rpm due to an air leak, ahahahah!)

Try turning the idle screw in a bit. Blip the throttle every so often while doing it and let it settle back down.

As far as the noise I'm lost. Alpha or Kerry (or another one of those awesome type guys or gals) will make the rounds in a bit. they'll know EXACTLY what's happening, cause they're cool like that.

Sweeeeeet.

Maybe you can tow me down the road since mine isn't happy with me right now!   :thumb:

Sooooo, any ideas anyone about this, the *tst, tst* noise seems to be in rhythm with the engine???  I did adjust the idel screw to compensate, but why all of a sudden would I have to do this - something has changed or broken to cause me to have to make an adjustment.

Thanks!   :icon_mrgreen:

Air leak will idle high, followed by a drop ... drop ... drop ... drop ... drop till it dies ... and you'll hear extra noise ... a dry sounding engine noise ....
Cool.

Plenty common BTW ...
There was the one at the guy I bought the other one from as well ...
My one and only 90 (non repaint) was black though, my 89's were white, black, and a repaint black, my 89 later became a 91 blue by virtue of kevinC's body pieces, then it got a silver body courtesy of the 91 I bought later, which got a repaint black thanks to Ginovega ... then the blues from my 89 are going on jetswings 95, I forgot, I also had a color changing repaint 90, silver to green to whatever ... that I had for under 12 hours back in 2004 ... In any case ... plenty common but nice anyway.
Cool.

Check:
Vacuum caps
Oil level
Valves/valve adjustment

I'm liking the vacuum cap problem.  I've recently checked the valve clearances at the beginning of this riding season and I just topped off the oil the day the problem happened.

Thanks - I'll check the vacuum caps and let you guys know!
